LISBON, July 1, 2009 (AFP) - Brazilian-born striker Liedson, who plays for top Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, announced Tuesday he had acquired Portuguese nationality meaning he could be picked to play for his newly-adopted country.

"I've already got my identity card, now I'm just waiting for my passport. It should only be a matter of days," Liedson said after Sporting had to settle for a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Champions League playoff against Italian side Fiorentina Tuesday.

Liedson, whose full name is Liedson Muniz da Silva, arrived in Portugal in 2003 and has a contract at the club until 2012.

Portugal are currently vying to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa and next face Denmark and Hungary on September 5 and 9 respectively.
