Carvalhal appointed Sporting Lisbon coach

LISBON, Nov 15, 2009 (AFP) - Carlos Carvalhal has been appointed coach of struggling Portuguese first division side Sporting Lisbon, the club announced on Sunday.

He takes over from Paulo Bento who resigned a week ago after one of the club's worst starts to the season in recent history.

"The contract signed with the coach runs until the end of the season," the club said, adding that there was an option for another season.

Carvalhal, 43, previously worked with Portuguese clubs including Vitoria Setubal, Belenenses, Sporting Braga, Beira Mar and Maritimo.

The Portuguese coach left Maritimo at the end of September.

The Libson club are currently tenth in the standings after ten games with 14 points, 11 points behind leaders Sporting Braga.
