NEW YORK, Nov 23, 2009 (AFP) - The US bid to host the World Cup again in 2018 or 2022 has received the backing of CONCACAF, football's regional governing body for North and Central America and the Caribbean.
Mexico withdrew their bid in September, leaving the United States as the lone contender from the Americas.
"The United States can count on the full support of CONCACAF," CONCACAF president Jack Warner said Monday.
Warner is a member of FIFA's 24-man executive committee, which will decide the 2018 and 2022 hosts in December 2010.
Australia, England, Indonesia, Japan, Netherlands-Belgium, Russia, and Spain-Portugal have also bid to host either of the World Cups, and Qatar and South Korea bid for 2022 only.
Warner, who has publicly criticised England's bid in recent weeks, has also spoken positively of Australia, noting the country's success organizing Olympic Games.
The decision on both 2018 and 2022 is to be made in December 2010.
South Africa is hosting next year's World Cup with Brazil staging the 2014 event.
