SYDNEY, Feb 2, 2010 (AFP) - New Zealand midfielder Michael McGlinchey will play for Scotland's Motherwell on loan to boost his chances of clinching a World Cup berth, Australia's Central Coast Mariners said Tuesday.

McGlinchey, who has previously played for Celtic, was released for three months by the A-League team after they failed to qualify for Australia's domestic finals series.

"Michael has a great chance to represent his country at the World Cup and this gives him a chance to be playing regular football until May," Mariners executive chairman Lyall Gorman said.

"We wish Michael all the best for the time he spends in Scotland, before welcoming him back to the Mariners after the World Cup."

McGlinchey, 23, helped New Zealand secure World Cup qualification against Bahrain in November. He has a two-year contract with the Mariners.
