Liverpool Finished?

“Damn, these cleats are tiiiiiiight.”
Liverpool

Ok, well I suppose it’s safe to say that I clearly underestimated Xabi Alonso‘s departure(see Predictions, although I’d rather you not). Liverpool has dropped two of three, including their first home loss at Anfield since 2007, and has already matched the amount of losses that they were able to evade for all of last season. The good news (although I’m fairly certain that any Reds fan would tell you that such a thing does not exsist) is that the season is faaaaaaaaar from over. However, the allotted time for an imperative turnaround is running thin. Very thin.

Like I said, the lack of midfield chemistry resulting from Alonso’s ‘viaje de Espana’ is more than obvious and unless Alberto Aquliani hurries the hell up and proves to be worth the money that he was paid for, it will haunt Liverpool all season. I can only imagine the sleepless nights Rafa must be having right now hoping that the Italian midfielder pans out. Meanwhile, Lucas Leiva has been the man appointed for the job and has been up to this point, an epic fail.

Ok, epic fail might be a little harsh. In fact, it is harsh because he is being asked to fill the shoes of a man who, in my opinion, you cannot replace (just ask Sir Alex about that one..). Name another player that has the vision, long range passing accuracy, and play making capabilities of Xabi Alonso? You really can’t. Watching Spain over the summer made that more apparent to me than ever. He makes that team go. More than anyone, I feel for Gerrard and Torres because they will no longer have goals fed to them on a silver platter. As for Lucas, he needs to settle down and play his game. He is a quality player and will hopefully come into his own soon. He might want to stop scoring for the other team though. Fans, coaches, and teammates generally do not like that.

Although there is someone new every week, Liverpool is now rumored to be interested in signing Real‘s Arjen Robben. Benitez has long been an admirer of the Dutchman and feels as if he would be a nice fit. However, coming up with the money could be a problem. Additionally, United is also rumored to have interest and after spending practically none of their ‘Ronaldo money’ this offseason, they have more than enough to trump any offer Liverpool will be willing to make.

I feel at this point, the most important thing for Liverpool is to not completely lose their shit. They travel to Bolton this Saturday to take on the Wanderers and not to take anything away from Gary Megson‘s club, but it should be a good opportunity to restore whatever amount of confidence has been lost. My guess is that they will come out firing and look to make a statement about where they intend to be at the season’s end. If you one of the several Liverpool supporters that are littering message boards with terrible things about Rafa’s mother, I’d suggest that you tone it down and give this club all the support you can give because this can very well be a make-or-break point in what was thought to be the year that the title returns home to Anfield. As for the rest of the Liverpool faithful, be patient. It’s a long season.
