6/26 16:00 GMT Uruguay vs South Korea – Stats
Uruguay and South Korea are no strangers to the world cup having met in the 1990 group stages. Daniel Fonseca’s 90th minute winner was enough to send the South Americans through to the round of 16. This time around, both teams will fancy their chances of reaching the quarterfinals.
Uruguay:
Uruguay has been extremely impressive in South Africa and will look to continue their run into and past the second round. 20 years is the time since the reigning 2 time World Cup Champions have reached the round of 16. La Celeste beat South Africa 3-0 and Mexico 1-0 and recorded a scoreless draw with France. Uruguay and Portugal remain the only 2 squads who have yet to concede a goal in South Africa. Diego Godin is expected to come back into the lineup after sitting the Mexico game due to a right hamstring strain. Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez have proved to be a constant threat while the back line continues to stand strong. Manager Oscar Tabarez however, will want his side to pick up the offensive pace against the South Koreans.
South Korea:
This is South Korea’s first knockout stage appearance outside of home soil. In 2002, the Korea Republic became the first Asian nation to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup, but were then knocked out in the first round in 2006. Now, they will look to duplicate their 2002 run and beat the Uruguayans to reach the quarterfinals. The Taegeuk Warriors will hope their 4-1 loss to Argentina will prepare them for the match against another South American quality side. Park Ji-Sung will need another good game if the Koreans want to advance. Coach Huh Jung-Moo must be very impressed with his side in their quest to make history. WSN.com Player to Watch: Park Chu-Young, it was his free kick that helped send South Korea into the round of 16.

Prediction:
Due to heavy rain, both teams have been asked by FIFA to refrain from training in Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, so the field may be a little slick come game time. Huge chunks of turf came off during the England Slovenia game. Typically harsh conditions benefit the weaker side, but the bad conditions should affect these teams equally. The winner will see the winner of the USA Ghana game on July 2 at at Soccer City in Johannesburg. Amazingly, both have a solid chance at making the semi-finals. The world class strikers of Uruguay, however, will come through in this one and carry La Celeste into the quarterfinals to face the USA or Ghana.
Pick:
Uruguay 2 – 0 South Korea
