Only 4 teams remain and either Spain or Germany have a very good shot at advancing to the final of World Cup South Africa. Both Spain and Germany will have earned their spot in the finals after knocking out very quality sides along their way. The two European sides met in the Euro 2008 final where Spain edged out Germany 1-0 through a Fernando Torres strike. Will Torres finally come of age and make an impact in Spain’s semi-final match-up on Wednesday? This one in Durban looks like a winner as both nations have surely improved since their 2008 dual.
Germany:
Germany although an unlikely favorite to have reached the semi-finals, have not failed to impress. Their young squad continues to provide the pace and flair that has carried them deep into the tournament. Die Mannschaft suddenly looks like the strongest team left in the group, having completely dismantled England and Argentina along the way. Ze Germans are showing the world just how to take advantage of counter attacks, but will rely on their lock down defense to see them through to the championship game. The Argentina match represents striker Miroslav Klose’s 100th international cap and the match in which he equaled German legend Gerd Müller’s record of 14 World Cup goals, one behind the all-time record of 15 from Brazil’s fat Ronaldo. Mesut Özil provides the free role and running that Germany so desperately needs. Thomas Müller is suspended after collecting too many yellows so look to Marko Marin, Toni Kroos or Cacau to feature in his stead. Let’s hope Germany’s young players will use their speed and youth to create problems and break up the possession of Spain. WSN.com Player to Watch: Miroslav Klose.
Spain:
La Furia Roja has much to celebrate in this year’s World Cup. Spain’s best performance of the World Cup came in 1950 with a fourth place finish in Brazil. The early favorites to win in South Africa are finally favorites again. Germany however, having steamrolled their competition, stands in their way. Spain will look to David Villa to continue his remarkable run to see the Spaniards into the final. Scoring 5, the Barcelona-bound striker is the highest goal scorer in the World Cup but is closely trailed by Miroslav Klose and Thomas Müller with 4 a piece. (Wesley Sneijder of Netherlands is the other remianing player to have scored 4). Villa’s resume includes an incredible 43 goals in 63 caps for the Red Fury. Cesc Fàbregas on the other hand, has shaken off his shoulder injury and will compete with Fernando Torres for a starting position. Torres has lost his touch while Fabregas has only come off the bench in three matches in South Africa but made a solid contribution against Paraguay. Capitano Iker Casillas has done well in the goal and will need another good performance against the German firepower. Iniesta and Xavi will need to continue dancing around defenders and provide looks to Villa up front. WSN.com Player to Watch: David Villa.

Prediction:
Germany has won the big stage on three occasions while Spain has never even reached the final match. Spain however, will not let history affect their focus this time around. Spain has only lost 2x (Switzerland and the United States) in the last three years and will continue their remarkable run to the final. Although, watch out for the dangerous German counter attack…
Pick:
Germany 1 – 2 Spain
