9/14 19:45 BST Werder Bremen vs Tottenham – Odds | Stats
The Group Stage of the 2011 Champions League kicks off at Weserstadion Stadium, where first timers Tottenham travel to Germany to face a quality and experienced Werder Bremen side. Will Tottenham’s new signings prove to be the key in fulfilling their Champions League dreams?
Werder Bremen:
Werder Bremen is a quality side and have several players with Champions League experience. Werder Bremen will have to do without centre-back Per Mertesacker who will be out for the next month with a broken eye socket. Naldo is also missing with a knee injury, so former Manchester United and Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre will anchor the defense. Torsten Frings, Tim Borowski, and Aaron Hunt are all coming back from small knocks and should see some action. Brazilian Claudio Pizarro may or may not feature. Werder Bremen sporting director Klaus Allofs claimed their draw against an inexperienced Tottenham could not have been better for the club. Be careful not to write off Tottenham so soon.
Tottenham:
Tottenham made some very respectable trades in the off season but have started their 2010/2011 Premier League campaign off on a shaky leg. Their Champions League draw on the other hand, is certainly not a pleasant one with holding Champs Inter Milan, Dutch Champs FC Twenty, and the experienced Germans. New signee Rafael Van der Vaart said of Werder, “We have a good chance of beating Werder. They are strong attacking but defensively have problems.” The midfield playmaker will most likely play for around 60 minutes against Werder as he is on his way to full fitness. After fearing the worst from Saturday’s fixture, Luka Modric’s leg injury was not as bad as first suspected. In form striker Jermaine Defoe however, is sidelined for 3 months with torn ligaments. Michael Dawson is also out with a knee injury. Peter Crouch will play as the sole striker in order to close the gaps in the midfield. Congrats to Tottenham, they are in the Champions League for the first time since its introduction.

Prediction:
Tottenham Manager Harry Redknapp is used to succeeding against the odds but will need his key players to perform in order to pull off the upset in Germany. Pressure is off Tottenham as the Germans have more to lose at home. Experience however, typically has the advantage.
Pick:
Werder Bremen 2 – 1 Tottenham
