Premier League derby games are always a fun and entertaining day of football, especially when you have the two most successful EPL clubs on display. At 18 Premier League titles a piece, Liverpool travels to Old Trafford in what is rarely is a disappointing affair, the North West Derby. The rivalry between the two side is so intense that no player has been directly transferred among the clubs since the 1964 transfer of Phil Chisnall. Michael Owen, has played for both teams, and will leave nothing behind in coming back to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United:

Manchester United are coming off of a very disappointing 3-3 draw to Everton after having led 3-1. Two Everton stoppage time goals illustrate the vulnerability in the back line of defense of a typically steel proof United side. Then, the Rangers were able to park the bus and manage a very good, but boring 0-0 draw in Old Trafford for their first Champions League match. Liverpool on the other hand, will look to kick start their season by attacking and putting pressure on the United defense. To make matters worse for United, Antonio Valencia suffered a devastating ankle break that will most likely put him out for the remainder of the season. Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick are still sidelined.

Liverpool:

Liverpool got the better of United in 2009 stomping the Red Devils 4-1 at Old Trafford. Last season, Liverpool beat United 2-0 at Anfield while United edged out Liverpool by a 2-1 margin at Old Trafford in March. Struggling of late, The Reds have won only once in their last 11 away games, scoring just eight goals in their last 14. Fabio Aurelio (Achilles) and Dirk Kuyt (shoulder) are out due to injuries. Liverpool, like United have thrown away at least one game already this season and simply cannot afford another slip up if they are to combat Chelsea for the title. Joe Cole looks as if to have been a bust, but will love nothing more than to get his season on the right track with a goal at his former club. New manager Roy Hodgson would be ecstatic with a win as he attempts to piece together a Rafa Benitez shattered squad. Thursday’s 4-1 win against Steaua Bucharest at Anfield should have left a good taste in the mouths of Liverpool players and supporters.

Torres is struggling
Torres vows to amend his recent lack of form against Manchester United.

Prediction:

Rooney, after a miserable start to the season, steps up and finds the back of the net. Torres on the other hand, needs to play well if Liverpool want to get back on track in shooting for the title. The last time United conceded at home was in December. Look for El Nino to break that incredible run.

Pick:

Manchester United 2 – 1 Liverpool
