Tottenham host Inter Milan in White Hart Lane round 2 style. In the last match, Inter did well to climb to a 4-0 lead before Gareth Bale mounted a comeback to make it look respectable for the 10-man Spurs. Tottenham has their Champions League future in their hands, and more than ever, has the squad to accomplish great things for the club. The might of Inter and a growing list of injuries however, stand in their way.

Tottenham:

Tottenham were dismantled in San Siro, but thanks to sheer pace and precise finishing by Gareth Bale, the Spurs left San Siro with hope for their 2nd leg at home. The Spurs had begun the Premier League season with high hopes, but Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United left the Spurs 10 points shy of table leaders Chelsea. After a very confusing play, Nani, who was appealing for a penalty, slotted the ball into the net to the referee’s no whistle. Nani had just previously handled the ball in an attempt to stop play, while Tottenham keeper Heurelho Gomes was simply lining the ball up for a free kick. The Spurs will need to put all of this behind them when il Nerazzurri come to town. Manager Harry Redknapp’s biggest concern lies with injuries as 5 of his best players are not available. Ledley King, Michael Dawson, Jermain Defoe, and Jonathan Woodgate are all out with long-term injuries as Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is suspended. Rafael Van der Vaart, who missed the match in San Siro, will also miss the return as he picked up a hamstring injury against United. The £8 million Dutch midfielder has brought an attacking flair to the Spurs having scored five goals in nine appearances for the club. Peter Crouch, on the other hand, could be called back into the starting lineup.

Inter Milan:

Rafa Benitez, although with big shoes to fill, is fitting right in at San Siro. Most of Mourinho’s treble winning stars remain with Inter, and most are still producing. Inter lead Group A while a win in White Hart Lane would guarantee them a spot in the knockout stages. Phillipe Coutinho had an excellent game against the Spurs, finding gaps in behind the defense. Inter is coming off a hard fought win against Genoa that boosted them into 2nd position of Serie A. Both goalkeeper Julio Cesar and Esteban Cambiasso picked up thigh injuries and may be sidelined for the return leg against Tottenham. Sulley Muntari will likely play in the stead of Cambiasso while Luca Castellazzi will be placed in goal. Despite a few injuries, Rafa’s side are full of experience and should not have too much trouble creating chances against the Spurs.

Prediction:

Both teams are very capable of scoring goals, so whoever holds a stronger back line should see through to win. As Maicon likes to press forwards, it should be an interesting battle between the Brazilian and the speedy Gareth Bale. Without Van der Vaart however, Tottenham will need to find some creativity in the midfield.

Pick:

Tottenham 1 – 2 Inter Milan
