The offense of the Ohio State Buckeyes has certainly been tested this year as they have felt the loss of some of their departed star players to the NFL. Through nine games this season, Ohio State has the 33rd-ranked scoring offense in the nation (32.8) as their passing game by quarterback Kyle McCord and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. has been playing at a consistent level.

Michigan State is a team that also has to replenish a lot of their key players who have left early for the NFL. This season, the Spartans are having a more difficult season than in the past few seasons, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Michigan State is ranked 74th in the nation in points allowed per game (26.6) with their biggest weakness is defending against the passing game (206.2 passing yards allowed per game).

The Spartans offense is in much worse shape than on the defensive side of the ball. Michigan State ranks 123rd in the nation in points allowed per game (18.2). Michigan State doesn’t have an identity they can rely on to break through the Buckeyes’ defense. In six of the nine games played, the Spartans have been held to 20 points or less scored.

The key to the Buckeyes’ success this season is their elite play on the defensive side of the ball. Ohio State ranks in the top five in most of the major defensive categories in the nation. They are ranked second in points allowed per game (10.7), fourth in passing yards allowed per game (142.4), and fifth in total yards allowed per game (256.9).  Defensive tackle Tyleik Williams is one of the best playmakers on the team and sets an example of the overall talent on the roster. Williams has accounted for 37 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and five pass breakups at the line of scrimmage.
