The Stars are off to a slow start to the season defensively as they've only allowed less than two goals in a game once. They are coming off a big 5-4 home win over the Philadelphia Flyers where the offense needed to bail out the sluggish defensive group.
Stars defenders Miro Heiskanen, Esa Lindell, and Jani Hakanpaa are all in the negative through four games this season. Goalie Scott Wedgewood (90% saves) has allowed four goals in his one game played. Dallas' main goalie Jake Oettinger (94.3% saves) has allowed five goals in 82 total saves in only three games. The Stars are allowing too many attempts to the goalie in a short amount of games.
The Stars are also seeing slow starts from their key players in forwards Jamie Benn (three points) and Jason Robertson (two points). Center Joe Pavelski leads the team in goals accounted (3) and points (5). Heiskanen and center Wyatt Johnson have accounted for three assists this season.
The Penguins are having an up-and-down start to the season. They started with a tough 4-2 home loss to the Chicago Blackhawks to open the season, followed by two big wins at Washington and home against Calgary, and are currently on a two-game losing streak after losses at Detroit and at St. Louis.
Center Evgeni Malkin has been stellar to start the season by accounting for a team-high eight points and a team-high four goals. Left-wing Jake Guentzel has accounted for six points with five of them being assists. Center Sidney Crosby has played big in mismatches and attacking the goalie by scoring three goals this season with two of them being power plays.
Goalie Tristan Jarry (89.2% saves) is also off to a rough start to the season after allowing 11 saves on 102 shot attempts. He will need to play better in order for the Penguins to get out of the losing streak and start establishing an impressive rhythm.
