Both of these teams have had tough starts to the season, with Tampa opening 1-2 while Buffalo sits at 0-2. There have been questions about this aging Tampa team, especially with Andrei Vasilevskiy out with injury. His absence has been apparent through their first three games, as Tampa has been outscored 11-14. The good news for the Lightning is that Buffalo has struggled to score goals in their first two games, registering just three.
Offensively, Tampa has started the season strong. Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, Brandon Hagel, and Nicholas Paul have all scored two goals. Blueliner Victor Hedman leads the team in points, with four assists to go with one goal.
This is a make-or-break season for the Sabres, and it has not gotten off to a strong start. They have been outscored 3-8. Rookie goalie Devon Levi had a rough opening game but was better against the Islanders in his second. The 21-year-old was sharp across seven games last season, landing the rookie the team's starting spot coming into the season. Don’t be surprised if we see reserve Eric Comrie between the pipes tonight, giving the rookie a game off.
As mentioned above, Buffalo has struggled to score goals this season. They have an exciting young corps of forwards but have not delivered through the first two games. While Zach Benson and Casey Mittelstadt have started well, Tage Thompson, Mattias Samuelsson, and Dylan Cozens have not done much. While that is a bit concerning, we think the pressure of ending their playoff drought rattled them, but they will soon settle in.
We think the struggles of both teams on defense lead to more than seven goals tonight, making it a great pick at DraftKing’s current price.
