The Colorado Buffaloes have been one of the biggest storylines since Deion Sanders was hired as head coach and he brought essentially a whole new team. Through the first couple weeks of the season, the Buffaloes looked like they were ahead of schedule of the rebuild. Colorado defeated #17 TCU on the road in week 1, followed by two big wins. The Buffaloes have since lost three of their last four games, all of them in conference play. While Colorado is ahead of the rebuild, especially after the program has only won one football game last year, Sanders knows he has some work to do.
The UCLA Bruins open the season with three victories over lower-caliber teams. In their first experience of the season against a legitimate threat, the Bruins lost 14-7 on the road to #11 Utah. UCLA was able to rebound with a 25-17 win over #13 Washington State. Most recently, the Bruins have lost to the very good #15 Oregon State Beavers on the road and have dominated the Stanford Cardinal, a team that beat the Buffaloes.
This game between the Buffaloes and the Bruins has the chance to be a potential shootout, as both teams possess great playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. Colorado is ranked 25th in the nation in points per game (34.4) thanks to the high-caliber playmaking of quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Through seven games this season, Sanders has completed 219-of-303 of his passes for 2,420 yards, 21 touchdowns, only three interceptions and a quarterback rating of 160.3.
The Bruins have relied more on their rushing attack, as they have two highly productive running backs in Carson Steele and T.J. Harden. UCLA is ranked 10th in the nation in rushing yards per game (215.1) thanks to the two high-power backs and an incredibly reliable offensive line.
It is on the defensive side of the ball where the Bruins truly have the edge. UCLA is ranked 10th in the nation in points allowed per game (14.9) as they have high-caliber playmakers throughout the field. Colorado, on the other hand, is among one of the worst defenses in the nation as they are 127th in points allowed per game (35.9) and 132nd in total yards per game (460.6). If there is one attribute that will be fixed by coach Sanders the most during the offseason, it would be the defense.
