Bayern Munich gave a stern riposte to anyone who believes there is still a title race in the Bundesliga last weekend.
Hansi Flick’s side was magnificent in its 5-0 dismantling of a Fortuna Dusseldorf outfit that has become much harder to beat since Uwe Rosler took charge at the end of January. It was a dominant performance from start to finish and one which demonstrated that Bayern is still far ahead of any other team in Germany.
It was the completeness of the display that was most impressive. Bayern was ruthless in attack, robust in midfield, and resolute at the back. The champion enjoyed 69 percent of possession and took 21 shots to Dusseldorf’s seven – of which only two were on target. Bayern registered an Expected Goals (a statistic that measures the quality of chances a team creates) score of 3.03 compared to its opponent’s 0.72.
Flick is the first Bayern boss to win 22 of his first 25 matches at the helm, surpassing Pep Guardiola’s record of 21. He insisted after the game that he is not overly concerned with such statistics, but the 55-year-old will no doubt be delighted that such a run has put Bayern on the brink of another championship.
Bayer Leverkusen is no pushover, though, and a home win may just about keep Borussia Dortmund’s title hopes alive. Leverkusen will ask questions of Bayern on Saturday, but this is another assignment that Flick’s side should successfully negotiate one way or another.

Leverkusen’s 1-0 defeat of Freiburg last time out keeps the club in a promising position in the race for the Champions League spots. It was not a vintage performance from Peter Bosz’s charges, but they succeeded in getting the job done.
Kai Havertz’s goal in that game means Leverkusen has now scored in each of its 13 most recent Bundesliga outings. Bayern has an even more noteworthy record when it comes to finding the net: the champion has drawn a blank in just one of its 29 matches in 2019/20.
Goals for both teams, therefore, looks like an astute selection for this game. With Bayern in phenomenal form, back the visitor to the BayArena to emerge victorious.
Bayern May Replicate Approach From Crucial Win at Dortmund
Although there was little to choose between the two teams when Bayern beat Dortmund 1-0 last month, it was no surprise to see the Bavarians collect the victory. Bayern is the master at finding a way to win, even when its opponent is just as good across the 90 minutes.
Joshua Kimmich’s wonderful chip decided that match at Signal Iduna Park. Dortmund pushed hard for an equalizer in the second half, but Bayern was well organized at the back and succeeded in shutting them out.
The league leader could adopt a similar approach here: seek to score the first goal in the opening period, before sitting back and holding Leverkusen at arm’s length. However, Dortmund could easily have opened the scoring in the first 20 minutes of that encounter, and if Bayer strikes first this game could really open up.
Leverkusen Must Ensure They Have Balance Across the Pitch
If Leverkusen is to take anything from this clash, Bosz must get the balance right between attack and defense.
The 1-0 victory over Freiburg was promising in that regard. Bayer did not create a great deal of opportunities, but it also denied its opponent a clear route to goal. In the end, Bayer’s superior individual quality made the difference.
However, if Saturday’s game is a contest fought along similar lines, Bayern will be triumphant. Bosz deserves credit for encouraging a brave, front-foot style of play, but he must ensure that center-halves Jonathan Tah, Sven Bender and Aleksandar Dragovic are afforded sufficient protection in his 3-4-3 formation.
Bayern Should Edge this Weekend’s Standout Fixture
If you can only watch one Bundesliga fixture this weekend, this is the one to pick. Leverkusen is an excellent side and it is rarely a dull experience to watch its matches – as was demonstrated even in a recent 4-1 defeat by Wolfsburg.
Flick will have studied that particular match in his preparation for Bayern’s trip to Leverkusen. Bayer was far too open that evening, and it paid a heavy price. A similar approach this weekend would probably yield an even more damaging result.
Bosz is likely to keep things tighter against Bayern, but he will still instruct his side to push forward when possible. After all, it is not in the Dutchman’s nature to sit deep and play defensively. In the end, though, Bayern will probably have too much quality for Leverkusen.
Take Bayern to win and goals for both teams here – Flick’s side looks unstoppable but a clean sheet could be beyond them on this occasion.
