Ever since its 1-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park last month, Bayern Munich has been the Bundesliga champion-in-waiting. Defeat in that contest would have seen Bayern’s lead at the top of the table cut to just a single point. Instead, Hansi Flick’s side moved seven clear of its closest challenger – and that is the gap that remains today with three rounds of games remaining.
Bayern’s position is not a surprise to casual Bundesliga viewers, let alone seasoned ones. Whether it is secured on Tuesday or this weekend, this championship will be Bayern’s eighth on the bounce and 30th of all time. The club’s dominance of German soccer can be seen in the historical rankings: the second-most successful side is Nurnberg, which has finished on top of the pile just nine times.
Werder’s predicament could hardly be more different. The River Islanders have won four titles and sits joint-eighth in the all-time pantheon. But silverware is far from its thoughts right now. With three matches remaining, Werder currently occupies the final automatic relegation spot. Fortuna Dusseldorf is level on points in the relegation play-off place, while Mainz is three clear of Werder in safety as the finish line comes into view.
Werder boosted its position with a timely 5-1 thrashing of Paderborn at the weekend, a result that all but sent its opponent down to the second tier. But Bayern is the absolute worst team to face when a side is looking to maintain some positive momentum.

It is often opined that desperation for points can focus minds and compel a team to perform above its natural level. There have, of course, been many examples of this phenomenon in action, but there is a reason that Bayern has amassed 45 more points than Werder this term.
So for all that Bremen will be going hammer and tongs for an unlikely point or three against the champion-elect, Bayern’s superior quality should ultimately shine through. Back Werder to get on the scoresheet but depart empty-handed.
Bayern Has an Ability to Win Games in a Variety of Ways
The sign of a champion is its capacity to emerge victorious even when it has performed below its maximum level. Bayern has turned that into an art form in recent years, with the 1-0 defeat of Dortmund last month a case in point. That was an even encounter with little to choose between the sides, yet no one was surprised that it was Bayern which found a way to land a decisive blow.
Bayern was again tested by Borussia Monchengladbach last time out. Gladbach is fifth in the table and engaged in a fierce battle with Bayer Leverkusen for Champions League qualification, and it demonstrated its credentials at the Allianz Arena on Saturday. Bayern took the lead through Joshua Zirkzee but was then pegged back by a Benjamin Pavard own goal before half-time.
As the clock ticked towards 90 minutes, it looked as if Bayern’s winning run would come to an end at nine consecutive matches. Then, in the closing stages, Leon Goretzka popped up to score the all-important third goal of the game and give the host victory. Even if Bayern is not at the top of its game on Tuesday, it should still find a way to win.
Werder May Have Left Itself With Too Much to Do in Too Little Time
Werder was impressive in its 5-1 demolition of an admittedly poor Paderborn side. After back-to-back defeats by Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg in which it did not score a single goal, it was essential that Florian Kohfeldt’s men collected maximum points at the Benteler Arena.
Werder was 4-0 up after an hour, and the emphatic nature of the triumph will give its players some hope ahead of the run-in. Mainz is its opponent this weekend; if Achim Beierlorzer’s side loses to Borussia Dortmund and Fortuna Dusseldorf does not beat RB Leipzig on Wednesday, Werder will have the chance to move into the much-coveted 15th place with a win over Mainz.
Yet it is hard to shake the suspicion that Werder may have given itself too much to do. Even victories over Mainz and Koln might not be enough to guarantee its survival in the top flight.
Werder May Be Desperate but Bayern Should Prove Too Strong
Indeed, this game against Bayern could hardly have come at a worse time. Flick’s side has still not made sure of the title and will therefore be as relentless as ever in search of all three points.
A crumb of comfort can be found in the fact that Bayern has conceded in three of its last five encounters, and Werder’s five-goal haul against Paderborn suggests the attack has rediscovered its scoring touch. But beating the bottom team in the Bundesliga is scant preparation for facing the league leader.
Our Pick: Take the Yes option here – Werder’s confidence will be lifted after the weekend but Bayern has too much attacking quality.
