It has long been a matter of when, not if, Liverpool gets its hands on the Premier League trophy for the first time. The 18-time English champion has not claimed the crown since 1990, two years before the top flight separated from the Football League and was given a new name. But Liverpool fans will not have to wait much longer to see their team become king of English soccer once more.

There is even a chance that the Reds will be able to make sure of the title in their home city. Everton will be desperate to stop that situation from happening, and a Manchester City victory over Arsenal on Wednesday would keep the champagne on ice for now. But if City slips up at home to Mikel Arteta’s charges, Liverpool would become champion by collecting all three points at Goodison Park.

Everton has plenty to play for beyond local bragging rights. Ten points clear of the bottom three, Merseyside’s second club will almost certainly keep its proud record of never having been relegated from the Premier League (Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United are the only other sides which can say the same) intact.

Everton will therefore be looking up the table rather than down. Six points separate Carlo Ancelotti’s side from seventh spot, the final guaranteed Europa League qualification place. A string of positive results could keep Everton is contention – although it is unlikely to take anything from Sunday’s Merseyside derby.

Matches between these two teams at Goodison Park rarely feature many goals. The scorelines from the last five Premier League meetings read: 0-0, 0-0, 0-1, 1-1, 0-0. Admittedly, the game before that was a thrilling 3-3 draw, but that was the exception rather than the norm.

Moreover, Klopp will no doubt instruct his players to focus first and foremost on keeping a clean sheet. If Liverpool do that, they should have the attacking quality to score at least once and pick up the win that will move them one step closer to the title – or even secure the trophy if Manchester City loses to Arsenal.

Everton’s Record in the Derby Makes for Miserable Reading

The results posted above do not tell the full story. Everton may have tied four of its last five league contests against Liverpool at Goodison Park, but it has a miserable record overall. Everton has not won any of its last 21 games against its neighbor in all competitions, a run which stretches all the way back to October 2010. If Liverpool avoids defeat here, it could mark 10 years unbeaten later this year.

Everton’s recent record in the derby is dismal, and the most worrying aspect is that Liverpool has not always been one of the best teams in Europe in that time. Everton itself has had five different permanent managers over the last 10 years but has consistently failed to emerge victorious from this fixture.

Its chances of doing so on Sunday are probably further reduced by the absence of supporters. The old-fashioned Goodison Park produces a raucous atmosphere but Everton will be unable to use that to its benefit this weekend.

Liverpool’s Defense Has Come to the Fore in Second Half of Season

Liverpool may be 25 points clear at the summit of the standings but it does not have the best-attacking numbers in the division. Those belong to Manchester City, which has found the net 68 times to Liverpool’s 66.

Where Klopp’s men do come out on top is at the other end of the field. Liverpool has conceded just 21 goals in its 29 games this term, which is comfortably the best record in the division. Interestingly, it made a shaky start to the season defensively, keeping just two clean sheets in its first 15 outings.

Since then, however, Liverpool has been incredibly solid. In its last 14 encounters, Klopp’s side kept 10 clean sheets. It did concede in each of its three games prior to the Premier League’s hiatus, but that was in part due to fatigue – and that should no longer be an issue.

Klopp Will Be Content to Grind Out a Win in First Game Back

Klopp is a proactive manager who encourages his team to play on the front foot. He is also a sensible coach whose sides are better defensively than is often acknowledged. That was not the case early on in his Liverpool tenure, but the club now possesses one of the most resolute backlines in Europe.

It is not in Klopp’s nature to encourage his team to play cautious soccer. But the German will nevertheless be careful not to go all-out attack against Everton when that is not what the situation demands.
