It can be difficult to judge Atletico Madrid as a club. Since winning the La Liga title in 2014, it has not really come close to repeating the feat despite back-to-back second-place finishes in 2017/18 and 2018/19. Yet Diego Simeone can hardly be criticized for that. Barcelona and Real Madrid have much bigger budgets and wage bills, which was what made Atletico’s 2014 triumph all the more spectacular. Moreover, Simeone has kept Atletico competitive throughout that time. It has not finished lower than third since 2011/12 and has continually bounced back from low periods during which many wondered whether the Argentinian had taken the club as far as he could.

Indeed, there has not – or at least not yet – been the type of collapse that brought Jurgen Klopp’s seven-year tenure as Borussia Dortmund boss to an end in 2015. BVB rallied to finish seventh in the Bundesliga that season, yet it was bottom of the table as late as matchday 19 in February. Klopp had done a magnificent job at Signal Iduna Park but it was clear that his time was up by the end of that campaign.

Simeone may one day experience something similar in the Spanish capital, but for now the Atletico train continues to rumble on. Victory here would move it one step closer to confirming yet another top-three finish, which would be an impressive accomplishment in a year of transition following a summer in which the squad was overhauled.

Atletico coasted to a 3-0 triumph over Real Mallorca last time out. It was clearly a game it was expected to win, but Mallorca was coming off a 5-1 victory – over Celta Vigo, no less – and high on confidence. The Colchoneros quickly put the relegation battler back in its place.

A trip to Balaidos might not be quite as straightforward, particularly as Celta has a decent record on its own patch in recent times. In the end, though, Atletico should not have too much trouble picking up another three points.

Atletico in Excellent Form and Looks Set for Strong Finish to Season

Atletico is now without defeat in its last 12 outings in La Liga stretching all the way back to February 1, when it narrowly went down to Real Madrid. Four of its seven victories within the current run have come by a single-goal margin, which will be no surprise to seasoned Atletico watchers.

Simeone continues to take pride in his side’s defense more than its attack, which makes him almost unique among the elite level managers in the game right now. Yet no one can argue that his approach is unsuccessful. That loss to Real Madrid left Atletico down in sixth place five months ago, but it has rallied since then, getting back to basics and reaping the rewards to move five points clear of fourth-placed Sevilla.

Simeone will of course be desperate to mount another title tilt, but even if that proves a bridge too far it is difficult to envisage Atletico falling out of the Champions League spots any time soon.

Celta Has Become Tougher to Beat as It Edges Towards Safety

Victory over Real Mallorca last week would have virtually ended Celta Vigo’s relegation worries. Yet it inexplicably slumped to a 5-1 defeat, meaning it is still too early for Oscar Garcia and his players to celebrate survival.

However, a look at Celta’s results over a longer period suggests that was an aberration. It was the only game it has lost in its last six, during which time it has thrashed Alaves 6-0 and held Barcelona to a draw.

Celta has become a tougher nut to crack since Garcia started getting his ideas across, and it is notable that it has lost just once at home since he took charge in November. Atletico will have to work hard to emerge victorious on Tuesday.

Atletico May Have to Grind Out a Win Here – But That Will Not Bother It

Few teams in European soccer seem to relish grinding out a narrow victory as much as Atletico Madrid. In fact, you sometimes feel as if it would prefer to win 1-0 than 5-0 – and that is just as well ahead of Tuesday’s encounter.

Celta is a strange side: towards the bottom of the division for the second season in a row, it nevertheless possesses some excellent players and is capable of giving any opponent a game. That means we should not expect Simeone to depart from his customarily cautious approach, which could limit the total number of goals we see at Balaidos.

Our Pick

Take the Atletico Madrid and under 2.5 goals option here – it is seldom a risky bet when Simeone’s side is in action.
