Cruz Azul vs Leon Predictions and Picks
Two top Liga MX teams with undefeated start to the season. Who will win?
Leon doesn’t seem to be given enough credit for their attacking firepower, but that said, Cruz Azul’s roster is one that is filled with countless Liga MX stars. This match will be closer than the odds expect, and after seeing performances in recent weeks, a draw would be a good option.

Abruptly stopped and canceled by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Clausura season had two teams sitting at the top of the league table after 10 matchdays: Cruz Azul and Leon.
This Saturday, both sides will face off in a Mexico City confrontation that will have hints of a playoff series.
For Cruz Azul, things are looking positive with their win and draw to start the season. Although the latest 1-1 tie was against a less-than-exciting team like Puebla, Cruz Azul was without striker Jonathan “Cabecita” Rodriguez, who is set to return this weekend. As the winners of the preseason Copa Por Mexico tournament and the first place team of the canceled 2020 Clausura, expectations are undoubtedly high for Los Cementeros in the second half of the year.
And yet, Leon won’t make things easy. With four points themselves — which includes an impressive 1-0 win over Monterrey earlier this week — Las Panza’s Verdes should once again be a title contender this season. They’ll at least make things interesting this weekend as well. With a playing style that prioritizes high-pressing and progressive soccer, Leon could easily score (and allow) a couple of goals against Cruz Azul.
Leon Have The Talent To Challenge Cruz Azul
What makes Leon so threatening in nearly every match is the fact that a number of players can step up as goalscorers.
Regardless of the team’s slow scoring start to the season, names like Luis Montes, Angel Mena, Jean Meneses, and Joel Campbell have all previously shared the goalscoring responsibilities of the frontline. Throw Emmanuel Gigliotti into the mix, who was recently brought into the club, and you now have a team that should do plenty in the final third.
If we had to make a guess as to which Liga MX club will finish with the most goals this season, you would likely find a sizable amount of fans and media who would point you to Las Panza’s Verdes.
Cruz Azul’s Attacking Stars Will Shine
Leon will bring some fun in the attack, but so should Cruz Azul this Saturday. Blessed with playmakers and finishers such as Cabecita Rodriguez, Elias Hernandez, Milton Caraglio, Orbelin Pineda, and many others, Los Cementeros truly have an embarrassment of football riches when it comes to their options available.
They have momentum from the first half of the year, a good showing in a recent preseason tournament, and an undefeated start to the season. Cruz Azul might allow a goal or two due to Leon’s attacking style, but there’s also no reason why they can’t do the same in return.
Who Will Be The Top Goalkeeper?
It’s a simplified and obvious argument to say that goalkeepers will be a big factor, but it will 100% be true this weekend.
In the previous canceled season, both Leon and Cruz Azul topped the league with more goals scored than any other teams. Heading into the current season, both teams were able to maintain most of those players who have made their respective teams attacking powerhouses.
Expect shots, expect plenty of attacking plays, and expect a number of opportunities for either Leon’s Rodolfo Cota or Cruz Azul’s Jesus Corona to shine in the net.
