Doosan Bears Team Notes
|Manager:||KIM Tae Hyung|
|Standing:||28-20-0 (3rd in KBO)|
Likely Pitchers: Christopher Flexen, LEE Yong Chan, KIM Kang Ryul
The Doosan Bears struggled greatly in the opening match of this series. They gave up 11 runs to an in-form Kiwoom Heroes team while Yu Hui-kwan threw the losing game. The Bears are now in competition with LG for third, on top of competing with Kiwoom for fourth.
The Bears allowed six of Kiwoom’s 13 hitters to hit over .500 in their first match. Only CHOI Won-joon allowed less than three runs out of their four pitchers, and he threw just a single inning. As a team, Doosan Bears are ranked eighth overall in the KBO. They are posting a 5.19 ERA and have allowed the second-least home runs all season.
They will likely look toward a steady pitcher in their last outing, someone along the lines of Christopher Flexen. Flexen is allowing a 3.46 ERA on the year and has six quality starts of his nine games played.
Doosan will look to rebound at bat, as they were only able to score two runs in their opening fixture against Kiwoom Heroes. The Heroes held them to two runs all game, surprising for the best-ranked hitting team in the league. Doosan are posting a .294 batting average so far this season and are fourth overall in home runs.
They just weren’t able to find their rhythm against the Kiwoom Heroes’ bullpen. Only two players, Jose Fernandez and OH Jae-il, were able to string together more than a single hit in the game and it was they who scored the Bears’ only two runs. Strong nights from them, as well as more from their supporting cast, will be needed to steal a game from the Heroes.
Kiwoom Heroes Team Notes
|Standing:||31-18-0 (2nd in KBO)|
Likely Pitchers: CHOI Won Tae, Eric Jokisch, LEE Seung Ho
Kiwoom Heroes looked comfortable in the first match against Doosan Bears. They battered Doosan Bears and now sit just two games back of first place NC Dinos.
The Heroes overcame their usual batting inconsistencies with an 11 run game to freeze the Doosan bullpen. Kiwoom ranks seventh overall in the KBO with a .267 batting average, despite having the third-most overall runs. They are also tied for second in total home runs.
Kiwoom will look to replicate their opening game success at bat where nine different players contributed to their 11 run game. LEE Ji-young was particularly strong on that day, posting 4 RBI’s while finishing with a .667 batting average.
Their pitching is where they will want to keep their form the most though. Kiwoom allowed just 2 runs in their first outing against Doosan and allowed just seven hits overall.
Kiwoom’s combination of relievers and closers are what put them over the top when comparing bullpens. Both KIM Tae Hoon and YANG Hyun are allowing a sub-3.00 ERA over 18 games played each and just over 35 pitches thrown.
WSN’s Pick: Kiwoom Heroes def. Doosan Bears
Kiwoom have a chance to be right on the heels of first place with a victory over Doosan Bears. While their hitting has been a surprise as of late, their bullpen looks to be the real difference-maker in this match.
