Washington Nationals

Washington could be in a position in Game 3 where their playoff lives are at stake after losing badly in Game 1 of this series.

The Nationals have a 10.5% chance of winning the World Series crown by Baseball-Reference and 7.0% by Fangraphs.

The Nationals currently have 7-1 odds to win the National League and 16-1 to take the World Series.

Pitcher Notes

Los Angeles Dodgers: Hyun Jin-Ryu (14-5, 2.32 ERA)

Ryu put together a career year in 2019, throwing his most innings since 2013 and setting a career-high in strikeouts in a season with 163.

  • In September, Ryu threw 25.1 innings, striking out 26 batters and allowed just six earned runs.
  • The Dodgers starter has allowed no earned runs in his last 14 innings pitched on the road.
  • Ryu allowed just two home runs in his last five starts of the season.

Nationals: Max Scherzer (11-7, 2.92 ERA)

In the Wild Card Game against the Brewers earlier this week, Scherzer went five innings, walking three, allowing three earned runs all via the home run and striking out six.

  • At home this season, Scherzer posted a 3.16 ERA with 130 strikeouts in 94 innings.
  • Left-handed batters hit .255 off Scherzer this season opposed to a .193 batting average to righties.
  • The Nationals’ ace has surrendered six homers in his last 17.2 innings thrown.

Hitter Notes

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers were tops in the National League scoring runs on the road with 5.49 per contest in 2019.

  • 3B Justin Turner is 1 for 2 off Scherzer with a three-run homer on his ledger.
  • OF Joc Pederson is 1 of 11 versus Scherzer with a double and five strikeouts in his career.
  • 1B Cody Bellinger is 1 for 11 with seven strikeouts off the Washington right-hander.

Washington Nationals

The Nationals offense was fourth overall in baseball scoring runs at home this season, plating 5.57 runs per home contest.

  • OF Juan Soto is 1 for 5 against Ryu in his career with three strikeouts.
  • 3B Anthony Rendon is 3 for 11 versus the Dodgers’ lefty with a solo homer.
  • SS Trea Turner is 2 for 13 against Ryu, but expect him in the lineup for the righty-lefty matchup.

Roster Notes

Los Angeles Dodgers

  • Four rookies made the Dodgers NLDS roster as Dustin May, Will Smith, Gavin Lux and Matt Beaty all were placed on the playoff 25-man team by manager Dave Roberts.
  • SP Rich Hill will pitch Game 4 if needed. Don’t expect him to throw more than 3-4 innings if he’s called into action.
  • 3B Justin Turner is dealing with multiple injuries but played in Game 1 going 1-5 and scoring a run.

Washington Nationals

  • Manager Davey Martinez chose a seven-man bullpen and a six-man bench for the NLDS series.
  • Martinez removed the third catcher Raudy Read and pinch-runner Andrew Stevenson from the roster used in Wild Card Game to make up the NLDS roster.
  • OF Michael A. Taylor made the NLDS roster as a fifth outfielder.

Game Prediction

I’m still worried about Max Scherzer’s ability to keep the ball in the park at home after giving up his third straight multi-homer game in the NL Wild Card Game against the Brewers.

Look for a Dodgers starting a lineup that leans hard on the lefties with Gavin Lux, Joc Pederson and Cody Bellinger all potentially delivering huge hits in a possible decisive Game 3 if the Dodgers win Game 2.

Game Prediction: Final score Dodgers 5, Nationals 2.
