NLCS Game 4: St. Louis Cardinals vs Washington Nationals - Predictions, Odds and Roster Notes

Yesterday, I said I’m not predicting a sweep, but with the way this series has unfolded it is hard not to see the Nationals following through and sweeping the Cardinals as they squeak one out late to head to their first ever World Series.

How to Watch

Where: Nationals Park, Washington D.C.

When: Tuesday, October 15th at 8:05 PM EST

How (TV/Radio): National TV: TBS. Nationals TV/Radio: MASN, WJFK/106.7 FM. Cardinals TV/Radio: Fox Sports Midwest, KMOX 1120 AM.

Team Notes

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals bats have gone cold, scoring just two runs over three games as they find themselves down three games to none in the best-of-seven series.

St. Louis has a 4% probability to win the NLCS and a 1% chance to win the World Series title according to Five Thirty Eight.

The Cardinals have +1600 odds to win the National League and +3000 to take the World Series crown.

Washington Nationals

The Nationals have played perfect baseball over the first three games of the NLCS, highlighted by their starting pitchers having gone 22.1 innings without allowing a single run.

Washington has a 96% probability to win the NLCS and a 38% chance to win the World Series title according to Five Thirty Eight.

The Nationals have -5000 odds to win the NL and are +180 to take the World Series.

Pitcher Notes

St. Louis Cardinals: Dakota Hudson

Hudson threw 4.2 innings in the Cardinals’ Game 4 win over Atlanta in the NLDS.

  • The Cards’ righty has thrown two terrific starts against the Nationals this year, pitching 13 innings and allowing just three earned runs.
  • St. Louis’ Game 4 starter posted a 2.36 ERA over the final two months of the season.
  • Hudson struck out just 50 batters over those final 61 innings, relying heavily on ground ball outs.

Washington Nationals: Patrick Corbin

Although Corbin threw 202 innings during the regular season, he has made three relief appearances for the Nationals in the postseason.

  • In Corbin’s lone start of the playoffs, he allowed just one run over six innings to the Dodgers.
  • On Sept 17th, Corbin allowed no earned runs over six innings while striking out 11 Cardinals batters in a 6-2 Nationals win.
  • Corbin has struck out 14 batters in 8.1 innings over his four 2019 postseason appearances.

Hitter Notes

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals have scored just two runs on eleven hits combined in their three NLCS losses.

  • OF Jose Martinez is 3 for 10 versus the Nats’ left-hander, with one double and three RBI.
  • OF Marcell Ozuna is 4 for 24 off Corbin with one homer and five RBI.
  • OF Dexter Fowler is 6 for 19 against Corbin with a double, triple and three RBI.

Washington Nationals

The Nationals’ offense exploded for eight runs on Monday night after plating five runs combined in the first two NLCS games.

  • 1B Ryan Zimmerman hit a three-run double off Hudson and is 1 for 3 lifetime.
  • SS Trea Turner is 0 for 3 against the Cards’ righty in their lone career matchup.
  • 3B Anthony Rendon is 2 for 4 with a solo homer versus Hudson.

Roster Notes

St. Louis Cardinals

  • SP Miles Mikolas is the probable Game 5 starter for St. Louis if they can hold off the sweep.
  • The top 3 batters in the order on Monday night for the Cardinals went 0-12.
  • The Cardinals were 41-40 on the road during the regular season this year.

Washington Nationals

  • The Nationals will start Anibal Sanchez if a Game 5 happens on Wednesday.
  • Nationals starters have posted a 1.59 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and .164 opponents’ batting average in the postseason.
  • Howie Kendrick went 3 for 4 on Monday night with three doubles becoming just the fourth player in an LCS game to accomplish the feat.

Game 4 Prediction: Cardinals vs Nationals

The Cardinals will be hoping to avoid a sweep by somehow doing what no other team has done in the playoffs this far to the Nationals; score on their starting pitchers.

With the St. Louis offense performing so poorly at the plate, the burden is on Cardinals starter Dakota Hudson to rein in the Nationals bats at home. This task will be easier said than done for the young starter.

Yesterday, I said I’m not predicting a sweep, but with the way this series has unfolded it is hard not to see the Nationals following through and sweeping the Cardinals as they squeak one out late to head to their first ever World Series.

Game 4 Prediction:

Nationals 4, Cardinals 3.
