2020 MLS Cup Winner - Odds and Top Favored Teams to Win

The 2020 MLS season kicks off on the weekend of February 29-30th as 16 teams begin their year on Saturday and the other ten play on Sunday.

As far as this year’s schedule goes, the regular season ends on October 4th, 2020 and the MLS Cup will be held on November 7, 2020

This season, MLS adds two expansion teams: the David Beckham-led Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC. The two teams for 2020 are the beginning of a six-team, three-year expansion plan as next year, the league will add Austin FC and Charlotte, and in 2022, MLS welcomes clubs in St. Louis and Sacramento.

Could one of the two new teams spoil the party and make it to the playoffs and win the MLS Cup? Vegas doesn’t believe so, but there are six teams that are certainly in the top tier and considered the heavy favorites to lift the MLS Cup come November.

Last season, LAFC ran away with the West but pulled up lame in the playoffs losing to Seattle at home 3-1 in the conference finals. With minor adjustments, the core of LAFC’s attack is back, including forward Carlos Vela, who scored an MLS-record 34 goals last season.

The club has been anointed the top spot among the MLS favorites in Vegas with a league-low odds of +300, primarily because they scored 85 goals against the 37 they surrendered, for a record goal differential of plus-48.

2. Atlanta United FC

Another team that put together an impressive 2019 season is the Atlanta United. Led by 27-goal scorer Josef Martinez, Atlanta, much like LAFC, entered the East finals as the favorite but were upset by Toronto by the score of 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Atlanta’s bid to win the 2020 MLS Cup has gained steam as the club now has the top odds in the Eastern Conference at +350. United will certainly be challenged by NYCFC for the Eastern regular-season title but with a premier offensive player in Martinez, Atlanta should have the edge heading into the year.

3. Seattle Sounders

The 2019 MLS Cup champions look to be the first team to repeat since the LA Galaxy pulled off the two titles in two years’ achievement in 2011 and 2012. After surviving a rollercoaster regular season, Seattle survived an extra-time thriller to Dallas in the opening round and then upset heavy favorite LAFC in the West Finals by the score of 3-1.

The Sounders front office had made a few large moves to the back four and it might take a few matches for the defensive unit to gel. As it stands, Vegas has Seattle at +700 to return and win their second straight MLS Cup.

The 2019 Eastern Conference regular-season champ, NYCFC enters 2020 hoping to rebound from their semi-finals loss to Toronto. The club is one of the most complete teams in the MLS and their defense may be the best in the league once again in 2020.

NYCFC will take on a new coach, Ronny Deila, this season, so that could affect the team in the opening months, but the club led the East in scoring and posted a conference-best plus-21 goal differential. Vegas has listed the club at +800, just behind Atlanta for the top spot in the East.

5. LA Galaxy & Toronto FC

Two teams are tied for the 5th best odds to win the MLS Cup and the high-profile LA Galaxy and their new striker, Chicharito, will be the glossy club for bettors at +1100. The Galaxy were tied for second in the West in goals scored last season, but the defense was atrocious as the team put up a minus-1 goal differential.

Toronto FC made an improbable run to the 2019 MLS Cup, winning the East by going to Atlanta and defeating United FC on their home pitch. Like the Galaxy, Toronto signed a flashy player for their attack in Pablo Piatti from Argentina.

Both teams will need to improve to make it back to the promised land as Toronto FC won the 2017 MLS Cup and the Galaxy have the most Cups in league history with five.
