The 29th edition of Major League Soccer is underway, and the first couple of rounds have already provided several surprising outcomes to the spectators. However, as predicted by many, Inter Miami are leading the charge in the Supporters’ Shield table after winning two and drawing one of their three games so far.

Two games into the new season, no team has managed to get a perfect start, as all teams have dropped points in at least one match. The MLS Cup holders, Columbus Crew, started their title defense with a narrow 1-0 win over Atlanta United at home. They were up against Minnesota United in the second round and were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw on the road.

The 2023 Supporters’ Shield winners, FC Cincinnati, were held to a goalless draw by Toronto FC in their first game of the new season in their own backyard. The club was on its way to securing another stalemate before Miles Robinson scored a 68th-minute winner on the road against Chicago Fire FC.

Los Angeles FC were on the verge of securing back-to-back MLS Cups when they reached the playoff final last season but were halted by Columbus Crew. The runners-up started the new campaign with a resounding 2-1 win at home against Seattle Sounders. However, the momentum collapsed after Real Salt Lake blanked them 3-0 in the second match.

There are many surprises lingering towards the bottom end of the aggregate table. New York City FC and New England Revolution have lost both their matches this season. San Jose Earthquakes share the same record. Meanwhile, Nashville SC, Orlando City, Philadelphia Union, and Seattle Sounders are among the 11 teams that have yet to register a win this season.

Inter Miami are at the top of the Eastern Conference, Supporters’ Shield table, and the Outrights Odds table. Below them, there has been a lot of movement due to the recent outcomes. LA Galaxy have leapfrogged multiple teams and are now among the top five competitors to win the prestigious Cup this season.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia Union and Seattle Sounders have dropped a few places after their subpar performances, which have seen them secure less than three points in the opening two matches. Meanwhile, the New York Red Bulls have also moved into sixth in the outrights table and seventh in the Eastern Conference.

MLS Cup 2024 – Analysis

Luis Suarez has announced his arrival in the MLS in style. The Uruguayan has scored two and assisted three goals in three appearances for Inter Miami. The striker nabbed one assist on his debut against Real Salt Lake. He set up the club’s second goal of the match, which Diego Gomez scored.

Inter Miami walloped Orlando City 5-0 in the last match. Suarez was the player of the match in that encounter, as he was involved in four of the five goals. He scored the first two before setting up Robert Taylor for the third. Lionel Messi scored the fourth goal before the two Barcelona teammates linked up on paper for the first time for the fifth.

While Suarez has five goal contributions under his belt, Messi is not far behind with four in his kitty. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has scored three goals and nabbed one assist in three appearances. Apart from the two strikers that are hogging the spotlight at Inter Miami, their teammates are performing well too.

Robert Taylor has scored two goals in three appearances, while newcomer Julian Gressel has pocketed two assists in three games. Inter Miami are off to a prolific start at home after winning both their home games this season, scoring seven in the process and conceding none. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain the momentum as the season progresses.

Meanwhile, LA Galaxy are looking for redemption this season, and a resurgence could be on the cards after the five-time MLS Cup winners finished 13th in the Western Conference last season after winning just eight out of 34 league games. After two rounds, the club is second on the table after dodging defeat in both their fixtures.

Greg Vanney’s men could have won their opening fixture against Inter Miami, but Riqui Puig missed an early penalty, and then Marco Delgado was sent off in the 87th minute. Capitalising on the circumstances, Inter Miami found a 92nd-minute equalizer via their talisman, Messi, to snatch a vital point on enemy territory.

Portland Timbers, DC United, Minnesota United, CF Montreal, and Charlotte FC have shown signs of improvement. However, only DC United could become genuine title contenders out of this lot. Their last MLS Cup glory came in 2004, and now they are relying on Christian Benteke to obtain wins and qualify for playoffs to become title contenders again.

MLS Cup 2024 – Prediction

After scoring eight goals in three matches, Inter Miami have already shown how prolific their attack is. Scoring almost three goals per match, the front three of Messi, Suarez, and Taylor will be hard to stop for any defense in the league. In midfield, Sergio Busquets has been robust and controls the tempo of the game well.

The back four of Jordi Alba, Tomas Aviles, Nicolas Freire, and DeAndre Yedlin looks staunch. Inter Miami are strong in all three departments. Drake Callender has kept two cleansheets in the three appearances. He has faced one penalty so far and saved it.

It is still early days in the MLS, and the true contenders will identify themselves as the season progresses. The resurging LA Galaxy will aim for playoff qualification this year, and their rivals, Los Angeles FC, will have their eye on the MLS Cup.

The defending champions, Columbus Crew, and last season’s Shield winners, FC Cincinnati, are also expected to be in the race. New York City FC could be staring at another poor season, while their rivals, New York Red Bulls, have shown signs of improvement and could reach the playoffs.

Based on the current form and squad analysis, it is safe to say that Inter Miami are one of the strongest clubs, if not the strongest, this season. They have the firepower to win the MLS Cup 2024.
