DC United come into this season energized. With a full training camp with leader Wayne Rooney under their belt, head coach Ben Olsen is looking to make a splash in the Eastern Conference this year.

DC shocked the world with an upset victory over the defending champions Atlanta United on opening weekend. Not only were DC United stout in defense, but they looked to be a team that could not only control the ball but also press their opponents and win it back in a hurry.

They will be facing off against a New York City FC team that is hungry for three points. After a draw to Orlando during the opening weekend, NYCFC is sure to want to establish themselves defensively to go with the two goals they did score. DC will have the weather the storm that is the oncoming New York attack.

New York City FC squandered a lead over Orlando City SC in their opening match of the 2019 MLS campaign. After going up 2-0 by 45 minutes, Orlando City SC was able to equalize by the 75th minute, forcing The Pigeons to settle for one point.

New York’s road loss isn’t as damaging as many perceive it to be. Orlando is a capable club with a surprisingly modern style of play that encourages some impressive scoring opportunities. Regardless, New York must come out focused if they intend to defeat DC United.

In one game, DC United have suggested that they are the new threat in the Eastern Conference. After dismantling Atlanta United in their opening match, DC is certainly aiming to continue their roll against NYCFC. They will have to limit the DC press and Wayne Rooney’s distribution if they want a chance in this match. Easier said than done.

What’s At Stake?

The matchup between DC United and New York City FC has been tightly contested since 2016. In seven matches since then, each team maintains the all-time fixture is tied 3-1-3.

A win for DC United would keep them at the top of the East at this early point in the season.

Coming away with only a tie in the first match of the season, a win would help NYCFC separate themselves from the pack.

Questions to answer

Did DC make a statement over reigning champion Atlanta?

Why did NYCFC fade in the second half?

We are going to compare DC United and New York City FC in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

DC United Won Their Opener 2-0

A lot of questions were in the air when DC United was drawn to face-off against the reigning MLS Cup Champion Atlanta United on opening weekend. After flaming out of the playoffs despite an inspired late-season run, it was questionable how far this DC United team could go.

DC put some of those questions aside when they took on Atlanta United during the opening weekend. Los Capitlinos dominated the opposition producing a 17-9 shot differential and a 6-2 shots on target differential. Not much more can be asked of DC in that game.

If their form maintains, Audi Field may be one of the most exciting fields in North American this summer. This win adds on to DC United’s current 12 games unbeaten streak in all competitions. If their form continues and they are fortunate with their health, it seems the sky is the limit for this DC United squad.

New York City FC Allowed A Second Half Comeback

New York City FC played a very comfortable first half. Entering the match they lined up in a 4-5-1 with some slight changes, including the debut of NYCFC’s first-ever homegrown player James Sands in a defensive midfield role.

Going up 2-0 by 45 minutes, it was surprising to see NYCFC lose their control of the game. NYCFC eased off of the gas pedal and thus allowed Orlando City SC to claw their way back into the game. A controversial no-call on a penalty shout is all that saved NYCFC with only ten minutes left in the match.

NYCFC’s first match proved that they are a team with some interesting talent on their hands. While they’re not world-beaters, they are a technically capable team going forward who has some solid options in both the midfield and in defense. They will need to keep their composure against the hard-charging DC United, so Domènec Torrent needs to be well-prepared.

When DC United and New York City FC face off, the key matchup will be seen in the midfield. Footballing legend and England international Wayne Rooney is the engine and key that unlocks his teams attack. On the other side, new Designated Player Alexandru Mitrita has shown flashes of the ability as a creative midfielder in his short time with New York.

Eighteen seasons into his career and Wayne Rooney is proving to be a vital cog in the performance of his side. The former Manchester United midfielder is a maestro in attack for DC United. Not only does he command their build-up play, but his ability as a long-ball distributor is invaluable to DC. While his legs may no longer have the same energy as once before, Rooney’s skill and intellect make up for some of his physical shortcomings at 33 years old.

Alexandru Mitri?? has already made an impressive impact for New York City FC upon his debut. Filling in the shoes of David Villa was going to be a difficult task for any incoming player, but Mitri?? is well on his way by being exactly who he is. A tricky midfielder with excellent passing vision, Mitri?? provided the assist to put the Pigeons up 2-0. With so many weapons around him, Mitri?? is spoiled for choice. Time will tell if he can cope with the oncoming pressure.
