Heading into Wednesday’s match, we’ll see two sides who are on different ends of the spectrum when it comes to their latest results.
For Real Salt Lake, confidence has been renewed after the Utah club clinched a much-needed 4-1 away win over their Rocky Mountain rivals, the Colorado Rapids. After previously going through three matches in a row without a win, Real Salt Lake exceeded their own expectations in the latest result that included a goal and two assists from Maikel Chang.
As for LAFC, they likely don’t want to look back at their own recent performance. In a heated El Trafico rivalry match against the LA Galaxy, LAFC were stifled by their crosstown adversaries who knocked them out with a 2-0 defeat. Even with league MVP Carlos Vela back in the XI for the first time in months, LAFC couldn’t find any of their usual magic or attacking prowess last Saturday at home.
To make matters worse, Vela was substituted out with an injury during the 58th minute of the game.
LAFC, With Or Without Vela, Should Bounce Back
All that said, LAFC should have no excuses this Wednesday. Even if Vela is potentially unavailable due to injury, it would be a genuine shock to see the team go through a third consecutive defeat — which would be a first in franchise history.
“We’re going to find a way to push ourselves out of it,” said manager Bob Bradley after the latest loss. “We’ve been a good team, a team that has played at a high level and a day like today is not acceptable for any of us.”
Even without Vela, that high level could still be achieved. We’ve seen LAFC thrive without their captain in the recent past. In the MLS Is Back tournament, other key figures like Brian Rodriguez and Diego Rossi emerged as some of the most lethal attackers in the competition. In fact, it was Rossi who ended up finishing the tournament as the top goalscorer with seven in total.
Away Success For LAFC In Utah
The good news for LAFC is that they have been brilliant in their away games in Utah.
Back in their first visit in 2018, LAFC steamrolled Real Salt Lake in a 5-1 thrashing at Rio Tinto Stadium. In their following meeting in 2019, they once again took charge away from home with a 2-0 win against the Rocky Mountain Club.
And in 2020? Even without Vela, who may or may not be available, it’s important to remember that of the seven goals LAFC has scored in Rio Tinto, only two came from the Mexican winger.
Will it be three wins in three away appearances for LAFC?
Doubts Surround Real Salt Lake In 2020
Credit is due to Real Salt Lake for their noteworthy victory over the Colorado Rapids, but questions still remain.
Before the win, manager Freddy Juarez and his men had only been able to secure one victory in their six matches of 2020. In the MLS Is a Back tournament, Real Salt Lake were lucky to clinch a knockout round spot as one of the top 3rd-placed teams in the group stage and were then immediately pushed out in the round of 16 by a 5-2 loss.
Defensively the team has looked susceptible, and against an attack-friendly squad like LAFC’s, it’s doubtful that Real Salt Lake will be able to earn a win.
