2019 GEICO 500 Driver Matchups

Having millisecond margins in play adds a different complexity to the matchups.

Predicting results at superspeedways is always tricky, as all sorts of different factors may interfere.

After assessing the risks, however, it’s possible to try and predict some of those head-to-head results.

Check out some good picks for this weekend’s GEICO 500 at Talladega.

How to Watch

What: GEICO 500

Where: Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, AL

When: Sunday, April 28th at 2:00 PM EST

How: Fox Sports (TV) | Motor Racing Network (Web radio)

Kyle Busch vs Brad Keselowski

Kyle Busch has been the go-to pick this season.

At Talladega, however, things are different.

The 2015 Cup Series champion has one win at the track.

Brad Keselowski, on the other hand, is a superspeedway specialist.

The 2012 Cup champion is known for his draft technique, which often lands him a decisive advantage.

Ford and especially Team Penske have been the dominant force at Talladega.

The blue oval manufacturer has eight wins over the last ten races at the track.

Team Penske is responsible for five of those, two courtesy of Keselowski.

With the #2 in contention for another win, the matchup favors him.

Pick: Brad Keselowski.

Jimmie Johnson vs Ricky Stenhouse Jr

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has established himself as a superspeedway specialist.

His two career wins came at Talladega and Daytona back in 2017.

Stenhouse scored his maiden victory from pole at the Alabama track.

The #17 has the second highest finish among active drivers over the last four races at Talladega.

Jimmie Johnson sits well ahead of Stenhouse in the standings.

Hendrick Motorsports is also on the rise.

The seven-time champion has the sixth highest average finish at Talladega among active drivers during the previously mentioned span.

While Johnson has performed better than Stenhouse this season, things will likely be different at Talladega.

The Roush driver’s recent record at the track gives him the edge for the matchup.

Pick: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

Joey Logano vs Denny Hamlin

Another interesting matchup featuring drivers who have done well at Talladega recently.

Joey Logano has three wins over the last ten starts at the track.

Hamlin has only won once during that span.

On the other hand, the Joe Gibbs driver has the third highest average finish over the last two seasons.

Denny Hamlin is also the reigning Daytona 500 winner.

While Hamlin has done better than Logano on average, Penske and Ford have been superior at Talladega.

Logano is second among the active drivers with three wins at the track.

A fourth one could very well be on the way.

As close as this duel might be, Logano has the edge.

Pick: Joey Logano.

Kurt Busch vs Ryan Blaney

Talladega is one of the tracks where Kurt Busch has never won at.

The Chip Ganassi driver is tied with Kevin Harvick for the most career starts at the track with 36.

The elder Busch brother does hold an impressive 19 top 10 finishes, however.

Ryan Blaney’s numbers at Talladega aren’t particularly great.

The Team Penske driver has two top 10 finishes in eight starts.

On the other hand, Penske’s record at the track favors Blaney.

The #12 driver’s form has improved recently, with four top 5 finishes in the last six races.

While the stats and individual records favor Busch, the equipment will likely tip the matchup towards Blaney.

This is a close call, but the Team Penske racer should take the checkered ahead.

Pick: Ryan Blaney.
