With three races left before the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs begin, it’s still permissible for Cup Series drivers to compete in Xfinity races.
Three drivers who will begin their respective quests for the Cup championship on Sunday are entered in Saturday’s race, and the oddsmakers love them.
Kyle Larson, who swept the Xfinity/Cup weekend at Watkins Glen on Aug. 20-21, is the handicappers’ first choice at +300 via DraftKings Sportsbook.
Christopher Bell has been pressed into service as a replacement for Darlington Dominator Denny Hamlin, who is still smarting from a wreck last Sunday at Daytona. Bell opened as second choice at +350.
Ross Chastain, who had a breakout race at Darlington in the Xfinity Series, is third pick at +650. Problem is, we don’t think any of the three Cup Playoff drivers will win on Saturday (see below).
In 14 Xfinity Series starts at the Track Too Tough to Tame, Justin Allgaier has recorded 10 top 10s and boasts an average finish of 9.0.
The driver of the No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet has won two of the last three races at Darlington. He’s a three-time winner this season despite seldom owning the favorite’s role.
Given the strength of Allgaier and the entire JRM Armada, we like Allgaier to visit Victory Lane at Darlington yet again this weekend.
The payday will be a good one, too—+800 at DraftKings.
This is the time of year that Xfinity Series drivers who are Playoff-bound start to take the race for the regular-season championship seriously.
With three victories and remarkable consistency this season, AJ Allmendinger has opened a 58-point lead over Ty Gibbs and has held the top spot in the standings for the last 16 races.
But Darlington is not one of Allmendinger’s best tracks. In three Xfinity Starts at the Lady in Black, the Kaulig Racing driver has scored one top 10, an eighth in this year’s spring race.
Consequently, we don’t expect great things from Allmendinger on Saturday. But can second-place Gibbs trim Allmendinger’s lead in the standings? Doubtful. Gibbs has yet to score a top 10 in two Darlington starts.
In fact, we like JRM driver Noah Gragson to beat Gibbs head-to-head at -110. And we favor former Darlington winner Brandon Jones to finish in the top five at +350.
