The Boston Celtics are somewhere in between a rebuilding phase and a competing phase. After the losses of key pieces Kyrie Irving, Al Horford, and Marcus Morris, Boston looks for leadership from a familiar place.

There is no longer anytime to wait, as the Celtics look to young wings Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum to step up. Just 22 and 20, the two seem to be the future of the franchise. They will receive support from newly acquired, three-time All-Star Kemba Walker.

The Celtics won’t receive a warmup game as they take on a vastly improved Philadelphia 76ers team in their opener. Boston has scorers, but how they handle the sheer size of the Sixers will determine their fate.

Head Coach: Brett Brown {All-Time 178-314 | PHI}

Season Record: 0-0

Projected Starting Five: (G) Ben Simmons – (G) Josh Richardson – (F) Tobias Harris – (F) Al Horford – (C) Joel Embiid

  • (G) Ben Simmons – 34.2 MPG | 16.9 PPG | 8.8 RPG | 7.7 APG

A long summer after the Sixers were sent home by a Hail Mary play by Kawhi Leonard, Philadelphia have retooled and look even stronger than ever before. While Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid remain the stars, their reinforcements are nothing to scoff at.

Josh Richardson is an upgrade defensively over JJ Redick, Tobias Harris returns, and GM Elton Brand was able to snatch away one of Emiid’s biggest competitors, Al Horford, away from his old home of Boston.

When the Sixers face off against the Celtics, it will be a clash of Eastern Conference powers. The Sixers look to be stronger than the Celtics on paper, but questions surrounding their depth and shooting are still valid.

What’s At Stake for Celtics vs 76ers?

The Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers are two of the NBA’s most storied franchises. After 298 regular-season meetings, the Celtics lead the all-time series 177-121.

A win for the Celtics is vital for them to prove that their squad has not been weakened after the departure of their two All-Stars.

A win for the Sixers will help solidify them above the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference conversation.

Can the Boston Celtics’ Defence Keep Up?

The Boston Celtics lost two of their tougher defenders when Marcus Morris and Al Horford walked away from their side. How they try to slow the Sixers will be key to their success.

While they acquired Enes Kanter for his offensive contributions, Stevens has taken to starting Daniel Theis as he is a stronger defensive center. Their main issue lies in the inevitable mismatches, with not a single player in their starting lineup under 6’6.

Expect Marcus Smart to take the obvious matchup of slowing Ben Simmons, but expect a team effort trying to stop Joel Embiid. Harris, Richardson, and Horford are all solid shooters, so their ability to close out after the double is essential.

Super-Sized Sixers

With Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons manning the point guard and center position, Philadelphia was already one of the NBA’s biggest teams. With the return of Harris and acquisition of Richardson and Horford, they are not only one of the tallest starting fives but strong on both ends of the court.

They face a Celtics team that can’t do much against their sheer size and strength. Daniel Theis is a quick, but light center, while Enes Kanter has never been known for his defensive aptitude.

Expect Philly to work hard for penetration and looks at the basket. Should they succeed, they’ll only grow more dangerous with their three-point shooters wide open.

Will the Ball Swing for the Celtics?

Brad Stevens has always run an egalitarian offense. Opting for excellent ball movement in favor of isolationist play. With fewer scoring options than any playoff roster, he’s coached, saying the ball needs to move is an understatement.

Their main issue lies with the tandem of Walker and Kanter. Two offensively adept players in one-on-one situations, but lacking on the defensive side. If their pick-and-roll is efficient, it would greatly open the floor for the Celtics.

Boston also needs ample production from Jaylen Brown and especially Jayson Tatum, who they expect to be near All-Stars this year. They’ve proven capable role players, but with the spotlight thrust upon them they will need to prove they are up to the challenge.

Do the Sixers Have Enough Depth?

The Sixers’ starting five is formidable, but just like last year, they are lacking in the depth department. They will rely on a big step from their younger pieces in order to keep up with the Celtics as the shifts change.

Bench players to keep an eye on are Mike Scott, Furkan Korkmaz, and Zhaire Smith. The two former are solid shooters from deep, while Smith is one of their most capable playmakers outside of Simmons.

The Sixers are a young team outside of their main rotation, so expect head coach Brett Brown to spend some staggering his bench unit with members of his starting five in order to keep their rhythm.

X-Factors: Josh Richardson (PHI) vs Jaylen Brown (PHI)

The matchup at the shooting guard position is under the microscope for this match between the Celtics and the Sixers.

Richardson and Brown are excellent two-way players, but while Richardson can settle into a lesser role, Brown needs to step up his game.

(G-F) Josh Richardson (6-6, 200lb (198cm, 90kg) | Tennessee | 4 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
18-19 25 MIA 73 34.8 16.6 3.6 4.1 .412 .357

Josh Richardson joins the Philadelphia 76ers as one of the most versatile players in the NBA. He is a solid offensive and defensive player with a knack for getting in passing lanes and distributing the ball.

Where in Miami he was the go-to option, in Philadelphia he will be able to settle in as a role player. He is a career 36.8% three-point shooter, which bodes well for his fit in the starting five.

(G) Jaylen Brown (6-7, 220lb (201cm, 99kg) | California | 3 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
18-19 22 BOS 74 25.9 13.0 4.2 1.4 .465 .344

Between his rookie and sophomore campaign, Jaylen Brown improved drastically, raising his stock and perceived potential to that of a near All-Star. He, unfortunately, regressed a bit in his last season, with a lessened role.

He will once again be one of the Celtics’ stars and will have to prove his efficiency can maintain. He was excellent in the paint last season but shot an average 34.4% from three.

Boston Celtics at Philadelphia 76ers Predictions and Odds

Why the Boston Celtics Will Win

The Boston Celtics have a number of scoring options. If they can get the proper rhythm going, they can succeed by pulling the rangy Philadelphia defenders out of place. They will have to compete on the defensive end though.

Why the Philadelphia 76ers Will Win

The Sixers’ sheer size will be a problem to not only the Celtics but the entire NBA. With a loaded frontcourt of Harris, Horford, and Embiid, their combination of paint and perimeter scoring is difficult to match. Philadelphia’s bench depth is still a question mark.
