Boston Celtics (Away)

Head Coach: Brad Stevens {All-Time 309-239 | BOS}

Season Record: 39-17

Projected Starting Five: (G) Marcus Smart – (G) Jaylen Brown – (F) Jayson Tatum – (F) Gordon Hayward – (C) Daniel Theis

Top Performers:

  • (F) Jayson Tatum – 34.2 MPG | 22.9 PPG | 7.0 RPG | .386 3P%
  • (G) Kemba Walker – 32.2 MPG | 21.8 PPG | 5.0 APG | 4.1 RPG
  • (G) Jaylen Brown – 33.7 MPG | 20.3 PPG | 6.4 RPG | 1.2 SPG

The Boston Celtics are one of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference with what is likely the best young core in the NBA. Touting the talent of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, on top of the leadership of Kemba Walker, the Celtics are a force to be reckoned with.

The Celtics are movement-oriented in their offense. Opting to drive and kick rather than rely on their isolation ability. It has served them well in a pinch though, especially through Jaylen Brown who is converting at a rate of 53.1% on mid-range isolation attempts.

Boston will have their hands full against a Utah Jazz team that is on a bit of a slide. Having lost three in a row, the Jazz certainly want a win against the Celtics before going on a four-game road trip.

Utah Jazz (Home)

Head Coach: Quin Snyder {All-Time 263-203 | UTA}

Season Record: 36-20

Projected Starting Five: (G) Mike Conley – (G) Donovan Mitchell – (F) Bojan Bogdanovic – (F) Joe Ingles – (C) Rudy Gobert

Top Performers:

  • (G) Donovan Mitchell – 34.4 MPG | 24.2 PPG | 4.3 RPG | 4.3 APG
  • (F) Bojan Bogdanovic – 33.3 MPG | 20.7 PPG | 4.2 RPG | .422 3P%
  • (C) Rudy Gobert – 34.6 MPG | 15.6 PPG | 14.4 RPG | 1.9 BPG

The Utah Jazz have taken a bit of a tumble down the Western Conference standings. After their three-game losing streak, the Jazz find themselves on the outside of the top four. They’ve momentarily given up home-court advantage in the playoffs.

The Jazz are coming off of a disappointing loss to the Phoenix Suns. Despite a big game from Donovan Mitchell, the Jazz were unable to withstand the three-point barrage that the Suns poured in on them.

Utah will be taking on a Boston Celtics team that will be able to exploit them in a similar fashion to the Phoenix Suns. Long, versatile, and capable from the outside, the Celtics will be a tough test for Utah.

What’s At Stake?

The Boston Celtics and the Utah Jazz are two of the oldest teams in the NBA. Over 98 regular-season meetings, the Celtics lead the Jazz 57-41.

A win for the Boston Celtics would bring them within two games of the second-place Toronto Raptors.

A win for the Utah Jazz would keep them in the hunt for fourth in the Western Conference.

Questions to answer

Will the Celtics find some production off the bench?

Will the Jazz be able to sort out their defensive issues?

We are going to compare the Boston Celtics and the Utah Jazz in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

BOS: Get Some From Everyone

In the Boston Celtics’ loss to the Los Angeles Lakers we saw an incredible performance from Jayson Tatum. Unfortunately, they received very little contribution from anyone who came off the bench.

Boston’s usual talisman in the paint, Enes Kanter, hasn’t played much off the bench as of late. Relying on a rag-tag bunch of youngsters – Wanamaker, Langford, and Williams – the Celtics are significantly weaker with their bench unit in play.

It’s not as if the Celtics starters haven’t made up for it, combining for 101 of their 112 points against the Lakers, but the lack of impact from the bench is felt greatly. To beat the Jazz, they’ll need consistent production regardless of lineup.

UTA: Press and Recover

The Utah Jazz were run over in their last match by the Phoenix Suns. Despite the Suns being a rather lowly team in the Western Conference, the Jazz were unable to stop the Suns’ dynamic attack.

A large issue for Utah was their inability to cope with the inside-out play of the Phoenix Suns. Just when they thought that the rim would be attacked, they could not recover and manage the kick out for three.

The Jazz allowed the suns to convert on an efficient 12 of 20 three-point field goals, while also allowing 74 points from inside the line. Considering the Celtics are one of the most efficient shooting teams, the Jazz must sort out their issues quickly.

Boston Celtics Roster Notes

(G) Kemba Walker – 23 Feb 2020 – Out (Knee) – The Celtics have listed Walker as OUT for Sunday’s game (Feb. 23) against the Lakers.

(C) Robert Williams – 19 Feb 2020 – Out (Hip) – Williams is a week or two away from returning, according to Tim Bontemps of ESPN.

Utah Jazz Roster Notes

The Utah Jazz have no roster changes of note.

Head-to-Head: (F) Jayson Tatum vs (G) Donovan Mitchell

Look at the future of the NBA when you observe the matchup of the night. Two of the leagues most dynamic scorers, Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchell face off. While they may not be household names at the moment, the two young All-Stars are some of the best in the game.

(F) Jayson Tatum (6-8, 204lb (203cm, 92kg) | Duke | 2 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 21 BOS 52 34.2 22.9 7.0 2.9 .445 .386

Did you see what Jayson Tatum did against the Los Angeles Lakers? He set Hollywood on fire! 41 points on 57.1% shooting, one of the most brilliant performances by a player all season. Tatum is showing that, when engaged, he is one of the best players in the NBA. Let’s see how his aggression fares against reigning defensive player of the year Rudy Gobert.

(G) Donovan Mitchell (6-1, 215lb (185cm, 97kg) | Louisville | 2 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 23 UTA 55 34.4 24.2 4.3 4.3 .457 .360

Donovan Mitchell is about as good of a combo-guard as you can get in today’s NBA. Much like Tatum, his ability to score the ball is second to none on his squad. Considering his usage stays rather consistent in wins and losses, about 30.3%, Mitchell will have to be very efficient against a switch-heavy Celtics defense.

Boston Celtics at Utah Jazz Predictions and Odds

Why the Boston Celtics Will Win

Shooting is their calling card and they can certainly exploit the Jazz from the perimeter. Bogdanovic and Ingles aren’t the most spry defenders at the wing position, so the Celtics’ drive and kick game should be in full effect.

Why the Utah Jazz Will Win

The Utah Jazz can intelligently dominate the paint in this matchup against the Celtics. Boston doesn’t tout much size at the rim, so the Jazz’s athletic wing attackers in Mitchell and Clarkson, on top of the rolling Gobert might be too much for the Celtics to handle.
