  • (F) Caris LeVert – 31.6 MPG | 16.8 PPG | 5.0 RPG | 4.0 APG

The Brooklyn Nets are beginning what will be part one of a home and home against the Boston Celtics. After winning the first two games of their three-game road trip, the Brooklyn Nets look to close it out with a 3-0 record.

Don’t expect to see many of the Brooklyn Nets’ stars in this matchup against the Celtics. They are injured across the board, but that hasn’t stopped key members from stepping up to the plate.

Spencer Dinwiddie has been carrying his team during this road trip. While the competition hasn’t been fierce, his composure as the offensive focal point is helping the Nets in the absence of Irving.

Boston Celtics (Home)

Head Coach: Brad Stevens {All-Time 282-266 | BOS}

Season Record: 12-4

Top Performers

  • (F) Jaylen Brown – 33.3 MPG | 19.2 PPG | 7.2 RPG | .365 3P%

The Boston Celtics have struggled with their injuries, but they have more than enough contributors to keep them competitive in the meantime. Kemba Walker will be a game-time decision, but Tatum and Brown look more than ready to stay at the plate.

With their injuries, they’ve had to rely on some G-League call ups and less-used bench members, to mixed results. Tremont Waters, Carsen Edwards, and Semi Ojeleye have all seen an extended run for Boston.

They take on a Nets squad that is as depleted as their own but has been on a roll as of late. Boston won’t get to welcome Kyrie Irving back tonight, but they’ll have their hands full with Spencer Dinwiddie.

What’s at Stake?

The Brooklyn Nets and the Boston Celtics have a young rivalry, due to the age of the Nets’ franchise. In 28 regular-season meetings, the Celtics lead the Nets 17-11.

A win for the Boston Celtics would push them into second place in the Eastern Conference.

A win for the Brooklyn Nets would keep them firmly in seventh in the Eastern Conference.

Questions to Answer

How long can Dinwiddie and Allen carry this Nets team?

How will the shorthanded Celtics manage?

We are going to compare the Brooklyn Nets and the Boston Celtics in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

Dinwiddie is the Leader

With Kyrie Irving out with a shoulder injury and Caris LeVert out with a thumb injury, the responsibility of the Brooklyn Nets has fallen to Spencer Dinwiddie. The previous two have missed the last ten combined, but Brooklyn has thrived.

Dinwiddie has been brilliant in the Nets’ four-game winning streak. He is averaging 24.0 points per game, 7.0 assists per game, and 1.0 steals on 43.2% shooting from the field. His three-point efficiency hasn’t been great (24%), but he’s made up for it by getting to the line 6.8 times per game and converting on 96.3% of those attempts.

Irving won’t be back for the Nets, but Walker may be back for the Celtics. Dinwiddie’s responsibilities defensively will rise, but with a 105 defensive rating over the last four, he’s looked more than passable.

Maybe Danny Ainge is on to Something

It’s a recurring joke in NBA circles, Danny Ainge can’t draft talent. But he can certainly trade assets to acquire talent. In their last win over the Kings, the Celtics’ deeper rotation players have shown some quality.

It was a close affair against the Kings, but at the end of the day the Celtics won out. Marcus Smart, Jayson Tatum, and Jaylen Brown are their current stars and they were all drafted by Ainge.

However, off the bench, Robert Williams, Tremont Waters, and Carsen Edwards helped to make the difference. With 19 points combined on 7-17 shooting, they weren’t perfect but held the line enough for the Celtics to take the game.

Jarrett Allen is the Pillar of the Nets’ Defense

The Brooklyn Nets brought in DeAndre Jordan, hoping that he would be the third-piece needed to complete a newly dangerous trinity with Durant and Irving. However as Jordan has struggled, Jarrett Allen has grown into a star.

The Nets haven’t been able to crack the top half of the league in defense, but Allen is certainly more than a deterrent. He’s allowing less than a point per possession when he is on the court, while also maintaining an impressive 26.1% rebounding percentage.

Did we mention that Allen is averaging 18.3 points and 14.3 rebounds on 75.7% shooting from the field in their last four wins? Allen doesn’t just have the best hair in New York, he’s the best at the pivot position.

Kanter may be the Key

Enes Kanter is playing a more limited role for the Celtics than he did for any other team in his career. While he is a liability on the defensive end, his offense is more than welcome on a team missing Kemba Walker and Gordon Hayward.

In the Celtics’ win against the Sacramento Kings Kanter started the game. He only played 25 minutes, but was 5-6 from the field and contributed 13 points and nine rebounds on the night.

Kanter will be matched with Jarrett Allen in this match. While Allen is a force in the paint, Kanter’s ability to pull him out of there is key to the Celtics’ success. Whether or not he can do that will be based on his quality on the defensive side of the court.

Head-to-Head: (F) Taurean Prince vs (F) Jaylen Brown

It’s an offense-defense matchup in the frontcourt that we want to keep an eye on in this matchup.

Jaylen Brown is looking like an excellent secondary piece for the Celtics and it will be up to Taurean Prince to stop him on the perimeter.

(F) Taurean Prince (6-7, 218lb (201cm, 98kg) | Baylor | 3 Years)

Taurean Prince is the Brooklyn Nets’ designated three-and-D player on the roster. With shades of a prime Demarre Carroll, Taurean Prince has been excellent for the Nets in an increased role.

Prince will be tasked with chasing around both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. In his last four wins he’s been great on the defensive glass and held an average defensive rating go 104. If he keeps his current form, Prince will surely be up to the task.

(F) Jaylen Brown (6-6, 223lb (198cm, 101kg) | California | 3 Years)

SeasonAgeTeamGamesMPPTSREBASTFG%3P%

After a slow start to the season, Jaylen Brown has really stepped up his play. In light of his extension, Brown is looking worth the investment with every passing game.

In his last three games, Brown has shot the ball below average. Only 39% from the field and 33.3% from deep. With Hayward out he is getting more touches. However with Prince guarding him, Brown will need to get creative to contribute to a win.

Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics Predictions

Why the Brooklyn Nets Will Win

An energetic defense and gritty offensive attack can win the Nets the day. On average they are not excellent on either end of the court, but their recent energy on defense may be able to take down a hobbled Celtics team.

Why the Boston Celtics Will Win

Brad Stevens’ ball-movement oriented offense is set up so that injuries won’t hobble their side. The Celtics have quality across the board and with Tatum, Brown, and possibly Walker back in the fold, their talent alone may be too much.

WSN’s Picks Nets vs Celtics

The Boston Celtics will have the advantage if Kemba Walker is on the court. If not, they still have the talent and organization to take down the Nets if their performance comes back to average.

WSN Picks: Boston Celtics defeat Brooklyn Nets.
