How to Watch – Mavericks vs Knicks

What: Dallas Mavericks at New York Knicks

Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

When: Thursday, 14 November 2019, 8:00 PM EST

How (TV/Radio): TNT | ESPN 103.3

Dallas Mavericks (Away)

Head Coach: Rick Carlisle {All-Time 757-631 | DET, IND, DAL}

Season Record: 6-4

Projected Starting Five: (G) Seth Curry – (G) Luka Doncic – (F) Dorian Finney-Smith – (F) Kristaps Porzingis – (C) Maxi Kleber

Top Performers

  • (G-F) Luka Doncic – 34.8 MPG | 28.3 PPG | 10.3 RPG | 9.1 APG
  • (F-C) Kristaps Porzingis – 31.4 MPG | 18.3 PPG | 7.9 RPG | 2.4 BPG
  • (G) Tim Hardaway Jr. – 23.0 MPG | 11.96 PPG | 2.3 RPG | .328 3FG%

The Mavericks had a chance to take on the leagues top-ranked team in the Boston Celtics earlier in the week, but they faltered when it counted the most. The Celtics are well-coached and experienced in big games, the Mavericks showed their inexperience.

The ten point scoreline differential against the Celtics does flatter Boston though. The Mavericks were in the game throughout but just couldn’t break through. A difficult night from Porzingis and the bench spelled their doom.

It is a big night for the Mavericks as they face off against Porzingis’ old side the New York Knicks, who also tout former Mavericks guard Dennis Smith Jr. If the Cavs want to get back on track, they must take down the lowly Knicks.

New York Knicks (Home)

Head Coach: David Fizdale {All-Time 69-124 | MEM, NYK}

Projected Starting Five: (G) Frank Ntilikina – (G) RJ Barrett – (F) Marcus Morris – (F) Julius Randle – (C) Taj Gibson

Season Record: 2-8

Top Performers

  • (F) Marcus Morris – 34.3 MPG | 18.1 PPG | 5.7 RPG | .436 3P%
  • (G-F) RJ Barrett – 35.3 MPG | 15.5 PPG | 5.8 RPG | 3.6 APG
  • (F) Julius Randle – 33.4 MPG | 15.5 PPG | 10.0 RPG | .460 eFG%

The Knicks have shown that they have a tendency to compete well, but in key moments fade and let the match get away from them altogether. Their 2-8 record is proof of their quality, but with some seasoning, they could be at .500.

Such was the case against the Chicago Bulls, where they were competitive but let the Bulls run away with the game in the fourth quarter. The Mavericks are even more talented than the Bulls, so the Knicks will have to clean up their act quickly.

Outside of Morris, Barrett, and Randle, the Knicks aren’t receiving much on either end of the court. They’re also expected to be missing key interior presence Mitchell Robinson against the Mavericks.

What’s at Stake for Mavericks vs Knicks?

Being in different conferences, the Dallas Mavericks and the New York Knicks do not meet often. Over 77 regular-season meetings, the Mavericks lead the Knicks 41-36.

A win for the Dallas Mavericks would push them into the top seven of the Western Conference.

A win for the New York Knicks would keep them in place, last in the Eastern Conference.

Questions to answer

Can Porzingis make a mark against his old team?

What can the Knicks do to get back on the right track?

We are going to compare the Dallas Mavericks and the New York Knicks in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

Porzingis Isn’t Yet 100%

Yes, Kristaps Porzingis took a season off to recover from his injury, and yes he is still being managed diligently despite the time off. His match against the Celtics proves that he is not yet back to full strength.

Against the Celtics, Porzingis was dreadful, even after several days of rest. Porzingis was saddled with foul trouble early, shot 1-11 from the field, and was shut down by the likes of Marcus Smart – who to his credit is a fantastic defender, despite his near one-foot size difference.

The Knicks crowd won’t be giving Porzingis any favors when he returns to The Garden. The break up was messy and both sides have said their fair share against the other. If Porzingis wants to clear the air, and more importantly get Dallas the win, he needs to be much better than he was against Boston.

The Knicks Need More From Their Veterans

The Knicks struck out in free agency, but they didn’t leave empty-handed. Julius Randle and Marcus Morris are two strong players, but their performance against the Bulls wasn’t inspiring as supposed leaders of this club.

Not only did the Knicks lose their last match, but Randle and Morris were also dreadful from the field. The two were 11-32 on the night from the field, putting up good numbers albeit hollow in the grand scheme of the game.

What does it suggest when a team’s rookie is the most efficient starter on the court? The Knicks need more from their starting forwards, who will need to work in tandem with their rookie star rather than hunting their own opportunities.

Who Can Support Doncic’s Playmaking?

Luka Doncic is a fantastic overall player. Most notably, his playmaking is top tier, looking like a point guard in a forwards body. But as the Celtics’ defense wore on them, the need for a secondary playmaker looked clearer and clearer.

The issue with the Mavericks is that their playmaking guards have gotten off to slow starts. Both Brunson and Curry are capable playmakers, but their true calling is as outside shooters. The answer may lie in the play of free-agent acquisition Delon Wright.

Wright was a starter to open the season but has recently been coming off the bench. He’s not a high-volume shooter, but he is accurate when called upon. With him and Doncic on the floor, there isn’t quite enough ball to go around. Averaging 5.6 assists per 36 minutes suggests Wright is the key to it all.

The Knicks Need To Be Focused For All 48

It seems like a foregone conclusion, but the way that the Knicks gave away their last match against the Bulls shows that it isn’t. Despite the game being tied in the fourth quarter, the Knicks went on to lose by 18.

The Knicks were outscored 23-17 in the fourth quarter against the Bulls, by Coby White alone! The total fourth-quarter scoring difference was 35-17, not to mention seven threes in the period, five by Coby White alone.

For a team whose owners came out to speak on how unsatisfied they are with their squad, there doesn’t seem to be the same motivation. The talent on the Knicks got them to a dead-even fourth quarter, they just need to prove they have the maturity to see it through.

Head-to-Head: (F-C) Kristaps Porzingis vs (G-F) RJ Barrett

Did you think this head-to-head would feature anyone else?

Former Knicks superstar Kristaps Porzingis finally returns to the big apple and will face off with the new face of the Knicks franchise, Canadian RJ Barrett. This match will have it all!

(F-C) Kristaps Porzingis (7-3, 240lb (221cm, 108kg) | Latvia | 3 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB BLK FG% 3P%
19-20 24 DAL 9 31.4 18.3 7.9 2.4 .401 .375

Kristaps Porzingis was dubbed the unicorn for good reason. At his size and technical ability, he has garnered comparisons to Dirk Nowitzki with even higher potential.

The headlines will focus on the emotions of the match, but for the Knicks to win Porzingis must use his size to dominate. Mitchell Robinson may not play in this match, after him there’s not another Knicks frontcourt player that can challenge Porzingis’ size.

(G-F) RJ Barrett (6-6, 202lb (198cm, 91kg) | Duke/Canada | Rookie)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 19 NYK 10 35.3 15.5 5.8 3.6 .400 .343

Say what you will about the New York Knicks, RJ Barrett is doing his utmost for himself and for his squad. The rookie may not be the darling of NBA media, but his numbers suggest that he is above the rest of his rookie class.

Barrett has excellent size for his position, but his best role is as a primary playmaker. It’s a difficult role to give to a rookie, with many other veteran options on hand. Barrett said he most wants to dunk on Porzingis, let’s see if that drive turns into a fabulous showing by the Canadian.

Dallas Mavericks at New York Knicks – Predictions

Why the Dallas Mavericks Will Win

At this point in time, the Mavericks are a savvier team. Doncic runs their offense to perfection and has proven that he can take over a game, or get his own teammates going. If the Mavericks can overcome New York’s athleticism, it’s an easy win.

Why the New York Knicks Will Win

The Knicks don’t have the pieces or the game plan, but what they do have is heart and willingness. If this team of castoffs can overachieve, control the glass, and lock up defensively, they can beat the odds.
