Last match highlights:

The Dallas Mavericks are sitting comfortably at seventh in the Western Conference.

They have a massive seven-game lead over the eighth-place Memphis Grizzlies, and also have the opportunity to climb as high as fifth in the West with a good run of form.

Dallas is coming off of a heartbreaking loss to the Indiana Pacers in what was a hard-fought match.

Despite being unable to handle the Pacers in the paint, the undersized Mavericks were able to keep the final score to a mere three-point differential.

Dallas is taking on a San Antonio Spurs team that is fighting for their lives. If you wanted to see the last time that the Spurs didn’t make the playoffs, you’d have to look back to the ’96-’97 season.

As one of their tougher opponents in an otherwise beneficial schedule, the Mavs will look to kill the Spurs’ forward momentum.

Last match highlights:

The San Antonio Spurs certainly aren’t where they hoped to be at the beginning of the 2019-2020 NBA season.

Currently 12th in the Western Conference and 4.5 games back of the eighth seed, the odds are against the Spurs to make a run to the playoffs.

After an awful start to the game in their last match against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Spurs went into overtime, just to give up the game by three points. Once again, the Spurs’ defense failed in clutch moments.

San Antonio faces off with a dangerous Texas rival in the Dallas Mavericks. Dangerous from every position on the court with a superstar at the point, the Mavs will test the Spurs’ shaky defense. Over their last ten, the Spurs haven’t inspired much confidence.

What’s at Stake?

The Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs are Western Conference mainstays. Over the course of 183 regular-season meetings, the Spurs have dominated the rivalry 112-71.

A win for the Dallas Mavericks would bring them level with the sixth place Oklahoma City Thunder.

A win for the San Antonio Spurs would give them the edge over the Portland Trail Blazers, and bring them level with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Questions to Answer

Can the Dallas Mavericks get anything from their role players?

Will the San Antonio Spurs put up a fight defensively?

We are going to compare the Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

DAL: Who Is Second in Command?

Everyone knows that the Dallas Mavericks move as Luka Doncic does. He is the star of the show and facilitates the offense for his entire team. While the Mavericks are well-balanced, they struggle when they fail to have a capable secondary scorer to Doncic.

The role immediately falls upon the shoulders of Kristaps Porzingis, who is considered the most capable scoring option outside of Doncic. His main issue has been inconsistency. While he’s recorded 15 matches of 20-39 points, he’s also recording 45 matches of only 0-19 points.

Considering the Mavericks bench is rather limited when scoring the ball, Dallas is much more effective when Porzingis is involved and efficient early. Seeing as the Spurs are in the bottom third of the NBA in field-goal and three-point percentage allowed, Porzingis will have to intelligently choose where he gets his shots.

SAS: Pick Your Poison

The San Antonio Spurs are a legendary basketball club and one of the premier organizations in the league. They’ve been famous for their defensive ability, but it has escaped them thus far in the 2019-2020 NBA season.

When a team relies on LaMarcus Aldridge and Demar Derozan as its stars, it is rare that they would be considered a top defensive side. However, the Spurs have forsaken all defensive focus, allowing 117.7 points in their last ten games and have allowed opponents to shoot 37.6% from deep on the season.

Against the Mavericks, the Spurs will have to choose whether or not they want to protect the rim or the perimeter. They lost their best shot-blocker in Jakob Poeltl to injury, so they’ve been packing the paint – to the detriment of their three-point defense. They can’t risk allowing Dallas to get off from both areas in this match.

Head-to-Head: (G) Luka Doncic vs (G) Demar Derozan

Two of the Western Conferences best scoring-playmakers face off when Luka Doncic and Demar Derozan step on the court. While their respective teams are trending in the opposite direction, both are game-changers for their squad.

(G) Luka Doncic (6-7, 218lb (201cm, 98kg) | Slovenia | 1 Year)

SeasonAgeTeamGamesMPPTSREBASTFG%3P%

Luka Doncic has to be frustrated with the result of his last match against the Pacers. While he contributed 36 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists on the evening, his team fell short. To beat the Spurs he’ll have to be more efficient from the field, especially from three where he was 4-13.

(G) Demar Derozan (6-6, 220lb (198cm, 99kg) | USC | 10 Years)

SeasonAgeTeamGamesMPPTSREBASTFG%3P%

Demar Derozan is an interesting player. By his splits, it’s suggested that his team performs best when he is not on the ball – his primary role. The truth is, Derozan’s efficiency is make or break for the Spurs. One of the most talented offensive-creators in the game, optimal usage for Derozan is defined by his ability to involve his teammates as much as score. To beat the Mavericks, he’ll have to get everyone involved.

Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs Predictions

Will the Dallas Mavericks win over the Spurs?

If the Dallas Mavericks can get some equal contributions across the board, and not solely rely on the play of Luka Doncic they can take this game. Kristaps Porzingis must also step up his game to support their star point guard.

Will the Antonio Spurs win over the Mavericks?

The San Antonio Spurs can take this game if they can manage the Mavericks threat from the perimeter. They will have to choose early where they want their defensive focus to lie, as they’ve not succeeded on any defensive front all season.
