Will Denver Maintain Their Red-Hot Shooting?
The Nuggets’ battle against the Jazz in the first round was certainly lacking defensive focus at times. Regardless of the circumstances, Denver looked excellent in taking the series from their rivals. They face a Clippers team that is more than capable of shutting them down.
In the first round, Denver shot 48.1% from the field and 44.3% from three. Mostly under the production of Murray, the Nuggets have been able to keep themselves in games due to the two-man game between Jokic and Murray.
The Clippers are sure to tighten up on the Nuggets’ shooters, so it will be just as important for Murray to act as a playmaker as he is a scorer.
Will the LA Clippers’ All-Around Play Shine Through?
The Denver Nuggets looked like offensive juggernauts against a team boasting the 2018-2019 Defensive Player of the Year in Rudy Gobert. The Clippers, on the other hand, shut down the leagues best offence in the first round to win the series in six games.
As with all Clipper games, all things go through Kawhi Leonard. The Klaw is averaging 32.8 points per game, 10.2 rebounds per game, and 5.2 assists per game. His stats are so impressive, it is overshadowing the contributions of his teammates.
The California-based franchise shot 50.1% as a team against the Dallas Mavericks in Round 1, a rate is sure to drop when they face a more defensively adept team in Denver. Still, the Clippers are intelligently moving the ball, rather than relying on the individual abilities of Kawhi Leonard at all times. They could get the jump on a battered Nuggets team.
Nuggets Key Player: (C) Nikola Jokic
— Denver Nuggets (@nuggets) September 2, 2020
There was so much buzz about the play of Jamal Murray against Donovan Mitchell, that many forgot about Denver’s only All-Star this season Nikola Jokic. Jokic is an all-around center, capable of changing the game with the pass, shot, or on the glass.
In the series-deciding game against the Utah Jazz, Jokic was brilliant. The Colorado team was more than comfortable seeing Jokic put up 30 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists on the match.
Against some more bruising big men in Harrell and Zubac, Jokic may be in his element. His ability to draw them out of the paint to create opportunities for his teammates will be key to their success.
Clippers Key Player: (G) Paul George
— LA Clippers (@LAClippers) August 26, 2020
All jokes about Paul George’s performance aside, the Clippers need his production to get into the Western Conference Finals. George was brought in to play Robin to Kawhi Leonard’s Batman, but he’s come up well short of expectations.
In the first round, George averaged a respectable 18.5 points and 6.8 rebounds, but that was on a dismal shooting display of 35.8% from the field and 27.5% from three.
George is one of the league’s best two-way players. It is as important for him to find his offense, as it is for him to lock up the likes of Jamal Murray on the defensive side of the ball.
