Season Record: 12-5, 3rd in the Western Conference

Projected Starting Five: (G) Patrick Beverly – (G) Paul George – (F) Kawhi Leonard – (F) Maurice Harkless – (C) Ivica Zubac

  • (G) Lou Williams – 32.2 MPG | 22.5 PPG | 5.8 APG | .358 3P%

The LA Clippers are rounding back into form and have earned themselves a five-game win streak.

Previous to their 25-point victory over the Pelicans, the Clippers found themselves winning by a margin of three or less in their last three games.

Their blowout of the Pelicans showed some good signs for them moving forward.

While New Orleans isn’t the strongest team, taking care of lesser competition on a night where they underachieved is important.

The Clippers begin a three-game road trip on Tuesday against the Dallas Mavericks.

George and Leonard weren’t themselves offensively against the Pelicans.

They will have to find their form when they take on MVP-candidate Luka Doncic and his Mavericks.

The Mavericks are soaring. Not only are they taking down lesser competition, Dallas has shown incredible resolve against some of the top teams in the NBA. Their five-game winning streak matches the Clippers’ own.

The Mavericks’ best performances came when they defeated the reigning champion Toronto Raptors in a hard-fought match, and outshot the blazing Houston Rockets in their most recent victory.

While it was their team performance that won them the day, there is no doubt that the Mavericks only reached their peak due to the incredible play of Luka Doncic. Their young star will look to replicate his play against two of the top two-way players in the league today.

What’s At Stake?

The LA Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks see a fair amount of each other, being conference rivals.

In 136 meetings, the Mavericks lead the Clippers 80-56.

A win for the LA Clippers would keep them in third place, behind the Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Lakers.

A win for the Dallas Mavericks would vault them above the LA Clippers in the table, swapping a notch in the win and loss column.

Questions to answer

What are the odds that George and Leonard lockdown Doncic?

What are the odds that Porzingis can help Doncic match the Clippers duo?

We are going to compare the LA Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

Can LA Lockdown the Mavericks?

The LA Clippers are one of the few teams in the NBA who have a top ten ranked offensive rating and defensive rating.

When they take on the Dallas Mavericks, who tout the best offence in the NBA, the Clippers will need to rely on some tough defending to take the game.

Luka Doncic is far and away the leader of the Mavericks offence, boasting and offensive box plus/minus of 11.9.

He is the orchestrator of their offence, which makes it clear that he will be the focal point of Doc Rivers’ defensive schemes.

Both Leonard and George are All-NBA level defenders, who will definitely see their fair share of time guarding Doncic.

While Leonard, George, and even Beverly will make life difficult for Doncic – who is .575 in effective field-goal percentage – it will be up to their supporting defenders to close out on the chances he creates for others.

Dallas’ Two-Man Team

Porzingis will likely take most of the season to knock the rust off of his game, but he is slowly making improvements in every game.

After finding a double-double in his last game against the Rockets, he’s looking good.

The second half of Dallas’ duo, Luka Doncic, can hardly be described.

A rather unathletic 6’7 point-forward, Doncic is putting up numbers that rival LeBron James. 41 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds were his line against the Rockets and he’s still improving.

The potential of their combination is deadly.

Doncic works better off the drive-and-kick, while Porzingis thrives in the high-post.

They don’t quite compliment each other yet, but their skillsets are sure to dumbfound even the savviest Clipper defenders.

The Clippers Front Court Starts on the Bench

The Clippers started their four-game home stretch with a 49-point victory against the Atlanta Hawks.

They finally got another big victory over the Pelicans, and the difference-maker in that game was Montrezl Harrell.

While Ivica Zubac is the starting centre for the Clippers, it is Montrezl Harrell that commands the paint for LA.

His energy is contagious and he is nearly unstoppable when he gets within five feet of the rim.

In their win over the Pelicans, Harrell was only the fourth player in NBA history to record 34+ points, 12+ rebounds, and 2+ blocks despite beginning the match as a reserve.

Shooting 13-18 on the game, Harrell is looking like an early Sixth Man of the Year favourite.

Dallas’ Bench Is Up to the Challenge

The Clippers bench is a force to be reckoned with.

Averaging 52.1 points per game, the LA bench unit is undoubtedly strong.

However, the Mavericks reserves are certainly up for the challenge.

The Mavericks bench is fourth in bench scoring at 43.6 points per game.

Of players to have started less than half of their appearances, none score less than 6.5 points per game.

Six different players scored from three in their win against the Rockets.

The Mavericks will need a similar effort against the Clippers who match an equally, if not more, capable squad off the pine.

LA Clippers Roster Notes

(G) Landry Shamet – 12 Nov 2019 – Out (Ankle) – Shamet is dealing with a Grade 2 high ankle sprain on his left ankle, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. There is no timetable for his return.

Dallas Mavericks Roster Notes

The Dallas Mavericks have no roster changes of note.

Head-to-Head: (G-F) Paul George vs (F-C) Kristaps Porzingis

These two players won’t match up frequently, but the performance of Paul George and Kristaps Porzingis is essential to the success of their respective teams.

Both George and Porzingis are coming off of difficult layoffs, but these sidekicks are yet to really hit the ground running beside their new superstar teammates.

(G-F) Paul George (6-8, 220lb (203cm, 99kg) | Fresno State | 9 Years)

SeasonAgeTeamGamesMPPTSREBASTFG%3P%
19-2029LAC629.025.06.34.7.446.417

Paul George has hit a wave of inconsistency, as expected of a player who missed the first 11 games of the season.

After shooting over 50% in his first three matches, George proceeded to shoot below 44% in his last three, capped off by a 6-20 effort in LA’s win over the Pelicans.

It’s clear that George can score, but fitting in along his teammates will take more time.

Williams, Leonard, and Harrell all need their opportunities, which George needs to balance as a playmaker.

Luckily, shooting 41.7% from three on ten attempts per game suggests George is more than capable of fading into the background if need be.

(F-C) Kristaps Porzingis (7-3, 240lb (221cm, 108kg) | Latvia | 3 Years)

SeasonAgeTeamGamesMPPTSREBBLKFG%3P%
19-2024DAL1531.318.59.12.2.416.370

It’s taken a while for Kristaps Porzingis to get used to playing second fiddle, but his performances as of late certainly inspire a bright future at the side of Luka Doncic.

Over the course of Dallas’ five-game winning streak, Porzingis has averaged 18.4 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game on 44.3% shooting from the field.

His scoring has been off, but he’s been a plus-21.2 in that stretch. He may not be the floor leader, but he is rounding back into All-Star form.

LA Clippers at Dallas Mavericks Predictions and Odds

Why the LA Clippers Will Win

The LA Clippers’ bench unit is ravenous.

If they get to speed, the combination of their relentless attack and lockdown defence have the potential to hold down the Dallas Mavericks’ stars.

Why the Dallas Mavericks Will Win

The Dallas Mavericks have a strong reserve attack that has the potential to match the Clippers’ own.

However, their true strength lies in the pace they can set against the Clippers. If the Mavs can manufacture fast, simple chances against the Clippers, they can overcome LA’s rugged defence.

WSN’s Pick

The LA Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks are two talented sides. But the combination play of LA’s offence and defence, supported by their league-leading bench looks too great to overcome.
