LA Clippers (Away)

Head Coach: Doc Rivers {All-Time 924-671 | ORL, BOS, LAC}

Season Record: 30-13

Projected Starting Five: (G) Patrick Beverly – (G) Landry Shamet – (F) Kawhi Leonard – (F) Rodney McGruder – (C) Ivica Zubac

Top Performers:

  • (F) Kawhi Leonard – 32.1 MPG | 26.9 PPG | 7.2 RPG | 5.1 APG
  • (G) Paul George – 30.7 MPG | 23.5 PPG | 6.0 RPG | 1.5 SPG
  • (G) Lou Williams – 30.0 MPG | 20.0 PPG | 6.2 APG | .386 3P%

Credit to the wild nature of the Western Conference, sitting sixth in the West just last week the LA Clippers find them back in second place after a three-game winning streak. While their streak comes at the expense of some favorable competition, their ability to take care of business without Paul George has been invaluable.

In their most recent game, the LA Clippers took down a surging New Orleans Pelicans side. It was a mess of a fourth quarter, wrought with fouls, game-tying plays, and questionable calls. However, the Clippers were victorious, due to the effort of Kawhi Leonard.

They’ll receive a step up in competition when they take on the Dallas Mavericks. Whether or not they have Paul George available is still up in the air. But LA will need to play much stronger defense if they hope to stop Doncic and his side.

Dallas Mavericks (Home)

Season Record: 27-15

  • (G) Tim Hardaway Jr – 26.1 MPG | 14.4 PPG | 2.9 RPG | .391 3P%

The Dallas Mavericks started the season off hot and they haven’t shown any interest in cooling down. They are just two games back of the Utah Jazz who own the coveted fourth seed in the East as Dallas looks to continue their four-game win streak.

The Dallas Mavericks are coming off of a convincing victory over a desperate Portland Trail Blazers team. A concentrated team effort led them to victory, to go along with a stunning shooting night from Doncic and Hardaway who may be contenders for future MVP.

Dallas can take a step in the right direction by defeating the LA Clippers when they host them on Tuesday night. Just 2.5 games ahead of the Mavericks in the table, Dallas can close the gap built by Kawhi Leonard.

What’s At Stake?

The Dallas Mavericks and the LA Clippers meet frequently as members of the Western Conference. Over the course of 137 regular-season meetings, the Mavericks lead the Clippers 80-57.

A win for the LA Clippers would bring them within four games of the first-place Los Angeles Lakers.

A win for the Dallas Mavericks would give them a full game cushion over the Houston Rockets who occupy sixth place.

Questions to answer

Can the LA Clippers find their defensive effort again?

How will the Dallas Mavericks overcome matchup issues?

We are going to compare the LA Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

LA Cannot Continue Their One-Way Play

The LA Clippers are coming off of a 133-130 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. You didn’t read that wrong and there was no overtime. The leagues’ seventh-best defence led by Kawhi Leonard allowed 130 points in regulation, 20.4 points greater than their average allowed.

Give credit to the Pelicans where it is due, they swung the ball with purpose and converted on 46 of their 86 field-goals. The issue for the Clippers is as it has been all season, they’ve struggled to scramble as a unit when the ball is moving.

While LA has many plus-defenders, they are lacking greatly with certain lineups. Lou Williams is a one-way player, one of the best in the league, and Montrezl Harrell is rarely found outside of the paint. They’ve failed to find their defensive balance of late and will need to against an offensively adept side in the Mavericks.

Matchups Are Key for the Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have a chance to grab a statement win when they face off with the LA Clippers. While it didn’t go well for the last time out against the Clippers, they at least have the experience to try and put together a solid game plan.

Dallas was outplayed in their last matchup with Paul George and the Clippers. LA forced them into 20 turnovers and 28.9% shooting from deep. The matchup of Doncic and George on Leonard was too much for the young guard to handle, while their big man Porzingis couldn’t contend with the energy of Zubac and Harrell.

There are a lot of things to clean up for the Mavericks this time out and it starts with Doncic. Dallas’ leader committed seven of the teams 20 turnovers and will have to be more diligent when orchestrating the offence.

Kawhi Leonard, Scoring in Bunches

While the loss of Paul George has hurt the Clippers, you can’t say that Leonard hasn’t put his fair share of work in over the course of his absence. They may be getting George back against the Mavericks, but Leonard seems prepared regardless of his availability.

Over the last five games where Leonard was the sole star on the court, he has averaged: 36.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 2.8 steals and is shooting 55.8% from the field and 42.9% from three.

Supported by Lou Williams who is contributing 22.8 points and 5.2 assists in that same span of time, the Clippers aren’t bereft of scoring in the absence of George. They proved against the Pelicans that they can shoot their way out of trouble, but won’t get away with it against the Mavericks.

Win the Frontcourt Battle

In the previous meeting between the Mavericks and the Clippers, Dallas’ big men provided them very little on the offensive side of the ball. Porzingis, Powell, and Kleber were the main culprits and this time out Porzingis won’t even be available.

Kleber and Porzingis combined to shoot 4-15 from the field in their last game while Powell was inconsequential outside of a few drop-offs and finishes. They did hold Montrezl Harrell to a quiet night, but they’ll need to contribute more if they hope to win without Porzingis.

The Mavericks bigs have one clear advantage and that is their ability to shoot the ball from range. Kleber needs to be clinical when drawing Harrell and Zubac out of the paint to the line, while Powell must mix up his pick-and-roll/pop decisions. If they can be valuable outlets for the pressured Doncic, the odds will swing in the Mavs’ favour.

LA Clippers Roster Notes

(G) Paul George – 18 Jan 2020 – Day To Day (Hamstring) – George did not play in Saturday’s game (Jan. 18) against the Pelicans.

(F) Maurice Harkless – 18 Jan 2020 – Day To Day (Back) – Harkless did not play in Saturday’s game (Jan. 18) against the Pelicans.

Dallas Mavericks Roster Notes

(F) Kristaps Porzingis – 17 Jan 2020 – Day To Day (Knee) – Porzingis did not play in Friday’s (Jan. 17) game against Portland.

(G) Ryan Broekhoff – 1 Jan 2020 – Out (Fibula) – The Mavericks announced that there is no timetable for Broekhoff’s return as he deals with a fracture of the proximal head of his left fibula.

Head-to-Head: (G) Lou Williams vs (G) Tim Hardaway Jr

When you see the matchup between Lou Williams and Tim Hardaway Jr, one word comes to mind “Gunners”. These two are in the game for one reason and that is to score the ball. Their job as secondary scoring threats is crucial to their team’s success.

(G) Lou Williams (6-1, 175lb (185cm, 79kg) | USA | 14 Years)

There isn’t much you can say about Lou Williams that isn’t already known. He comes off the bench, he scores the ball, and second units hold their breath until they realize the starters are coming back on to the court.

Williams is coming off of an incredible scoring effort his last time out against the New Orleans Pelicans. He scored 32 points and dished five dimes in a three-point victory. Seeing as the Mavericks have as high-octane an offense as them, Williams will be counted on more than ever.

(G) Tim Hardaway Jr. (6-5, 205lb (196cm, 92kg) | Michigan | 6 Years)

Tim Hardaway Jr. has finally settled into a role at this point in his career. Too inefficient to be the first option, the second generation NBAer is the Mavericks’ designated shooter from the two-guard position.

Hardaway was essential in the Mavericks’ most recent victory over the Trail Blazers as he contributed his second-highest scoring match of the year with 29 points on 9-16 shooting. His ability to both shoot and slash to the rim will have to test the defensive ability of Lou Williams.

LA Clippers at Dallas Mavericks Predictions and Odds

For help placing your best bets check out our guide on how to be on the NBA to check out our tips and strategies.

Why the LA Clippers Will Win

If the LA Clippers want to take this match, it will have to be a defensive victory. They won by the skin of their teeth last time out, due to a late error by an inexperienced team. To win they will have to stop the Maverick’s three-point barrage.

Why the Dallas Mavericks Will Win

Slowing down the LA Clippers’ stars is a tall order for even the best defensive team. For the Mavericks to win this time out, they will have to escape, break, and punish the Clippers’ own defence. Maintaining their top ten three-point shooting percentage will be essential.

WSN’s Pick

Paul George’s participation will be a huge factor in the result of this game. In your classic offence versus defence NBA battle, the LA Clippers look to be the stronger in this matchup. Their ability from range and in the paint will likely be just enough to overcome the Mavericks.
