LA Clippers (Away)

Head Coach: Doc Rivers {All-Time 916-667 | ORL, BOS, LAC}

Season Record: 22-10

Projected Starting Five: (G) Patrick Beverly – (G) Paul George – (F) Kawhi Leonard – (F) Maurice Harkless – (C) Ivica Zubac

Top Performers

  • (F) Kawhi Leonard – 31.3 MPG | 25.5 PPG | 7.8 RPG | 5.1 APG
  • (G) Paul George – 30.5 MPG | 24.5 PPG | 6.0 RPG | .401 3P%
  • (G) Lou Williams – 30.0 MPG | 19.4 PPG | 6.1 APG | .371 3P%

It just goes to show how dangerous it is in the Western Conference. After sitting in second place in the Western table, a single loss in their last game to the Oklahoma City Thunder dropped them all the way to fourth.

The Clippers’ have been alternating wins and losses in their last six games. After blowing out the San Antonio Spurs in the first of their three-game Christmas road trip, the Clippers lost a gutsy match to the Thunder.

They take on a Lakers team that is looking for revenge after an opening night loss to these Clippers. LA will need to find some consistency against a Lakers team that has found theirs.

  • (F) Kyle Kuzma – 23.1 MPG | 11.1 PPG | 3.4 RPG | .360 3P%

On the season, the Los Angeles Lakers have been absolutely dominant. After going 3-2 on a recent road trip, they are more than happy to spend their holiday season at Staples Center.

Unfortunately their opponent also has a home game of sorts, as the Clippers won’t be on the road. The Lakers started off strong, but they’ve lost their last three games against the Pacers, Bucks, and Nuggets.

The Clippers will want to prove opening night wasn’t a fluke. While the Lakers are sure to be at the ready, in order to stop their losing streak and show who the true power in LA is.

What’s At Stake?

The LA Clippers and the Los Angeles Clippers have a one-sided rivalry. In 155 regular-season meetings, the Lakers lead the Clippers 102-53.

A win for the LA Clippers would vault them back to second place in the Western Conference.

A win for the Los Angeles Lakers would give them a four-game lead over the second-place team in the Western Conference.

Questions to Answer

How can the Clippers regain their offensive edge?

Can the Lakers spark their defense?

We are going to compare the LA Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

The Clippers Need to Rekindle Their Board Dominance

On the season, the LA Clippers have been one of the NBA’s most feared teams on the glass. Between their wings and forwards, every dangerous is capable of collecting the rebound.

Unfortunately, they struggled against the Oklahoma City Thunder. They gave up a shocking 16 offensive rebounds to the Thunder, powered by a 17 rebound effort by Thunder center Steven Adams.

While neither McGee or Howard are at the level of Adams on the glass, the Clippers must be stronger. It will start with Zubac and Harrell, who weren’t strong enough to handle the opposition in their last game.

The Lakers Defence Has Been Dismantled

Anthony Davis said it after their most recent loss to the Denver Nuggets:

Our attention to details on the defensive end and our awareness just slipped the past couple games. We’re not aggressive on that [end] anymore. And that goes back to the road trip.”

The Lakers have been getting beaten off the dribble, around screens, and on back cuts. They are allowing 111.3 points per 100 possessions, ranking them in the bottom third of the league. They’ll need to improve to beat the Clippers.

George Has Been Struggling

After an amazing four-game run, Paul George came up bare for the Clippers against the Thunder and the Spurs.

He is 10-28 from the field in his last two games and has committed seven turnovers to add insult to injury. The Clippers need him to find his form if they want to take down the Lakers.

Without Leonard in the lineup against the Thunder, George failed to initiate his offense. He’ll likely have his partner against the Lakers, but converting on efficient offense is still his responsibility.

The Lakers Can Still Attack

While many are focusing on the defensive shortcomings of the Lakers, they are still performing admirably on the offensive end.

Against the Nuggets the Lakers shot 47.0% from the field and 34.5% from three. While not astounding from deep, they still can’t be challenged in the paint. Kyle Kuzma has been all offense off the bench, but they’ll need more to beat the Clippers.

Avery Bradley has struggled since his return, so don’t be surprised to see more Quinn Cook. Cook is a career 41.1% three-point shooter – a good enough mark to give extended minutes. Especially with the Lakers’ bench’s last 4-12 outing from deep.

LA Clippers Roster Notes

The LA Clippers have no roster changes of note.

Los Angeles Lakers Roster Notes

(F) Kyle Kuzma – 19 Dec 2019 – Day To Day (Left Ankle) – Kuzma did not play in Thursday’s (Dec 19) game against the Bucks.

(C) DeMarcus Cousins – 15 Aug 2019 – Out (Knee) – Cousins suffered a torn ACL in his knee, according to Shams Charania. He’s expected to miss the entire season.

Head-to-Head: (F) Kawhi Leonard vs (F) LeBron James

The two biggest stars of the NBA face off when the LA Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers have their Christmas matchup.

Kawhi Leonard is still up to his load managing ways but is still brilliant when he touches the court. LeBron James, on the other hand, has been transcendent, seemingly renewed at 35 years old.

(F) Kawhi Leonard (6-7, 230lb (201cm, 104kg) | San Diego State | 8 Years)

We may never know when Kawhi Leonard is going to hit the court next, but what is for sure is that he is one of the most important players when he is on it.

He has been brilliant from the field, but his playmaking this season is a career-best. Leonard isn’t the passer that James is, but the attention he creates now has a capable director at the helm.

(F) LeBron James (6-9, 250lb (206cm, 113kg) | Saint Vincent-Saint Mary | 16 Years)

SeasonAgeTeamGamesMPPTSREBASTFG%3P%
19-2035LAL2934.825.87.510.6.496.356

There isn’t anything to LeBron James’ game that we don’t know. He is one of the greatest players of his generation, era, in fact, of all time. His ability to affect all sides of the attack is more than we’ve seen from any player before.

When he faces the Clippers, he’ll be taking on one of the NBA’s all-time defenders in Leonard. James’ playmaking will be put to the ultimate test. If anything, James will need to be more selfish than usual to take a win.

LA Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers Predictions

Why the LA Clippers Will Win

The Clippers’ two-way ability is near-unmatched. They had a rough outing with Leonard off the floor, but his return generally spells new vigor. The combination of George and Leonard is one of the few that can actually match James and Davis.

Why the Los Angeles Lakers Will Win

The Los Angeles Lakers need to pull a page from the Thunder’s book. To win they’ll need to take the battle on the glass. The Lakers don’t generally like doing the dirty work, but they’ll have to beat the scrappy Clippers.

WSN’s Pick

The Los Angeles Lakers are out for revenge. They are also not the team the Clippers saw on opening night. The Clippers have struggled with consistency, but the Lakers look to have the form to take down their city rivals.

WSN Picks: Los Angeles Lakers defeat LA Clippers.
