Season Record: 14-5

Projected Starting Five: (G) Patrick Beverly – (G) Paul George – (F) Kawhi Leonard – (F) Maurice Harkless – (C) Ivica Zubac

  • (G) Lou Williams – 22.5 MPG | 22.5 PPG | 6.2 APG | .379 3P%

The LA Clippers keep on rolling as they have notched their seventh straight victory by taking a hard-fought win over the Memphis Grizzlies. While it took a late-game chance to finally put Memphis away, their resolve without Kawhi Leonard was apparent.

The Clippers are now 3-3 in matches that Kawhi Leonard does not play. With Paul George back in the fold the Clippers can rest a bit easier, but it isn’t as if they’ve got it al going for them.

LA fouls quite a bit, notching them at 25th in the NBA. Against Demar Derozan and LaMarcus Aldridge, two famous foul-hunters, the Clippers will need to be more disciplined or suffer at the hands of Gregg Popovich’s offense.

An era ends for all franchises, and while we’re not ready to write off the San Antonio Spurs, they are looking nothing like the stalwart team that we’re familiar with. They’ve lost 13 games before playing 20 and their defense is in shambles.

Coming off of a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the time is coming closer and closer for the Spurs to decide how they’re going to compete this season. Do they still think they’re contenders? Or are they just treading water until their next star raises its head?

San Antonio takes on one of the most capable offensive teams in the league in the LA Clippers. While the Spurs’ attack is still something to worry about, their 29th ranked defense is their biggest issue.

What’s at Stake? LA Clippers vs SA Spurs Rivalry

The LA Clippers and the San Antonio Spurs maintain a rather lopsided rivalry. In 137 regular-season meetings the Spurs lead the Clippers 100-37.

A win for the LA Clippers would bring them to second place in the Western Conference.

A win for the San Antonio Spurs would help them claw out of thirteenth in the West and have them sitting at eleventh in the West.

Questions to Answer

What will Kawhi Leonard show in his return to San Antonio?

Where can San Antonio regain its footing?

We are going to compare the LA Clippers and the San Antonio Spurs in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

What Will Kawhi Leonard Give In His Return to San Antonio?

The history of Kawhi Leonard‘s career will always be attached to the San Antonio Spurs. After forcing his way out of the storied franchise, he has blossomed into one of the NBA’s greatest stars. However, in matches against the Spurs, he hasn’t exactly starred.

In two matches versus the Spurs with his former team the Toronto Raptors, Kawhi Leonard averaged 23.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists on 44.4% shooting. He is 1-1 in those matches but may have the upper hand as the Spurs are struggling defensively.

With much of the first return emotion gone, Leonard will likely be able to settle into his role against the Spurs. With Toronto, he was more of a scorer, but he’s shown great ability as a playmaker for the Clippers. With San Antonio’s porous defense, Leonard will surely cause problems as a scorer and a distributor.

Positives in Losses are Important for the Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are coming off yet another loss, this time to the rising Minnesota Timberwolves. While they are certainly growing impatient, there are some positive in these losses. Namely the growth of Lonnie Walker IV.

Against the Timberwolves Walker posted 11 points on 5-8 shooting in only 13 minutes of play. While it wasn’t a career-high, his play directly changed the flow of the game. His ability to attack the rim, shoot the ball, and physically challenge the long-armed Andrew Wiggins was welcome.

Walker will likely see a long run against the Clippers, seeing as Derozan’s defensive acumen is poor and Belinelli played a grand total of seven minutes against the T-Wolves. He’ll have a tough time scoring against the Clippers defense, but his energy and resolve is certainly a nice change of pace for the recently plodding Spurs.

LA’s Bench All-Stars

The LA Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard and Paul George will get all the press, but LA has some weapons off the bench that are just as important as those two. Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell are splendid players, but their impact is felt without Leonard and George on the court.

Both would be capable starters, but both Harrell and Williams have taken to being stars in their role. In their last win over the Memphis Grizzlies, both notched double-doubles and were crucial to the game-winning play.

At the end of the game, the ball was in the hands of Lou Williams, who drove for a layup, which was subsequently missed and put back down by Harrell for the win. Combining for 48 points, 11 rebounds, and 14 assists off the bench, the Clippers’ are ready to take on any lineup.

San Antonio’s Shooting Is Concerning

The San Antonio Spurs’ offense is famous for its ball movement and spacing, however, in recent matches they’ve been unable to capitalize on their opportunities. With Demar Derozan running the offense they have great penetration and finishing, but their shooting hasn’t met the mark.

Against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Spurs were able to generate 29 opportunities from three-point territory. Unfortunately, they were only able to connect on five of those opportunities, shooting 17% on the evening.

The Spurs aren’t a high volume three-point shooting team, ranking 30th in the league, but they need to convert if they hope to make up for their defensive issues. They won’t fix their defensive ability overnight, but they can certainly quell fans’ concerns by staying competitive from deep.

LA Clippers Roster Notes

(G) Landry Shamet – 24 Nov 2019 – Out (Ankle) – Shamet is expected to miss the Clippers’ upcoming three-game road trip (through Nov 29), according to Jovan Buha of The Athletic.

San Antonio Spurs Roster Notes

(F) Chemezie Metu – 27 Nov 2019 – Day To Day (Foot) – Metu did not play in Wednesday’s game (Nov. 27) against the Timberwolves.

Head-to-Head: (G) Paul George vs (G) Bryn Forbes

Take a look at the shooting guard position for our key matchup of the evening. Paul George is settling into his role well while Bryn Forbes has been a welcome surprise.

Both are counted on to be supporting acts for their teams, but their ability to take on players on both ends of the court is key for their respective teams’ success.

(G) Paul George (6-8, 220lb (203cm, 99kg) | Fresno State | 9 Years)

Paul George started off hot with the LA Clippers when he returned from injury, but has cooled off considerably. After averaging 35 points in his first two games back, George has averaged a much more modest 21.3 points per game in his last six.

George will likely open the match guarding one of the NBA’s premiere offensive forces in Demar Derozan. His defensive ability is just as important to the Clippers as his offensive qualities. In losses George allowed 1.9 points per possession, in wins 1.01 – his stopping ability is key.

(G) Bryn Forbes (6-2, 190lb (188cm, 86kg) | Michigan State | 3 Years)

SeasonAgeTeamGamesMPPTSREBASTFG%3P%

Despite the return of Dejounte Murray, Bryn Forbes has been the mainstay guard in the starting lineup for Gregg Popovich. A 6’2 point guard with excellent offensive intelligence, Forbes is the rock in Popovich’s backcourt.

Forbes’ shooting slump over the past four matches has been disappointing though. Shooting only 28.9% from the field, Forbes, at the least, is creating for teammates. In wins, Forbes is shooting 42.4% from the field and 40% from deep, versus 38.4% and 32.6% in losses. His efficiency is essential to the Spurs’ success.

LA Clippers at San Antonio Spurs Predictions

Why the LA Clippers Will Win

The LA Clippers have the offensive firepower and the defensive discipline to take down any team in the NBA. There’s little to suggest that they won’t be able to score enough to take down the Spurs and their porous defense.

Why the San Antonio Spurs Will Win

Gregg Popovich’s Spurs are still running a top ten offense, but they can only take the game if the defensive side of the ball becomes a priority. DeRozan and Aldridge can score on anyone, but they can only take the win if they make up for their deficiencies when stopping the ball.

WSN’s Pick

The LA Clippers will likely be too much to handle. While San Antonio can tighten the screws on their defense, it’s difficult to imagine they’ll stop the scoring onslaught of Leonard, George, Williams, and Harrell.

WSN Picks: LA Clippers defeat San Antonio Spurs.
