The Los Angeles Lakers open the NBA’s return against their chief rival in the Western Conference, if not in the NBA, the LA Clippers. The Lakers are currently losing the season series against the Clippers 1-2 with this, the last match remaining between them this season.
It’s been a tightly contested affair between the two sides so far this season. The Lakers have been able to enact their signature showtime style, but they’ve struggled to find efficiency at times. Their three-point shooting can be a real game-changer, as they’re averaging 11.7 made three-point field goals against the Clippers.
They’ll have to contend with the Clippers’ excellent perimeter defenders and talented bench scoring unit. After retooling with a number of late-season additions, the Lakers will certainly be sporting an unfamiliar five at times.

|Clippers’ Top Performers|
The LA Clippers are entering the most important time of the season. With significant time off, the Clippers are ramping up their focus in order to compete for the NBA Championship. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George have looked excellent in their prior scrimmages.
Concerns abound for the Clippers as Lou Williams won’t be available for this match and Patrick Beverley’s status is still up in the air. They’ve received some impressive contributions from new additions Joakim Noah and Marcus Morris, but how they’ll lineup is certainly a worry.
Much like the play style of their two stars Leonard and George, the Clippers are one of the league’s best two-way teams. Ranking third overall in offensive rating and fifth overall in defensive rating, their balance will cause issues for the Lakers.
LA Clippers Roster Notes
(G) Landry Shamet – 27 July 2020 – Day-to-Day (Illness) Shamet is likely to be available for Thursday’s matchup with the Lakers.
(G) Patrick Beverley – 27 July 2020 – Day-to-Day (Personal) Clippers head coach Doc Rivers said that Beverley is a “maybe” for Thursday’s match against the Lakers.
(G) Lou Williams – 26 July 2020 – Day-to-Day (Quarantine) Williams will be under quarantine protocol for ten days after breaking NBA bubble rules.

This match will be the Los Angeles Lakers’ last opportunity to defeat the Clippers during the regular season and bring the season series level. They won their most recent meeting with the Clippers in March, but the matchup has been tightly contested every time.
These two teams are so closely matched that the difference will be seen in the Lakers’ star players. LeBron James continues to dazzle, despite his age, and Anthony Davis has been the leader of a tremendous defensive line. The Lakers added some new guns throughout the season and they will be put to the test in this first matchup.
James will be the first player to lead the NBA in assists per game from the forward position in history. His playmaking ability is generational and tailored to promoting the success of spot-up shooters like Danny Green, Quinn Cook, and JR Smith. Against the Clippers’ dynamic defensive group, conversion on kick outs will be key for a Lakers victory.
The LA Clippers Will Rely on their Bench
— LA Clippers (@LAClippers) July 24, 2020
Lou Williams is not expected to be available for this matchup while Patrick Beverley’s status is up in the air. They’ll also may be missing Landry Shamet, due to his positive coronavirus test. Due to those absences, expect Doc Rivers to rely heavily on a hybrid lineup of his bench and starters.
In the spotlight is center Montrezl Harrell. Harrell is one of the best sixth men in the game and is averaging 18.6 points per game on 58% shooting from the field. Despite Los Angeles’ tremendous length in the paint, Harrell’s blue collar style has remained effective. Against the Lakers this season, Harrell has been averaging 18.3 points and 7.0 rebounds on 66.7% shooting from the field.
With expected three-point guards unavailable for this game, it will be up to Kawhi Leonard, and his new and improved playmaking, to create opportunities for his teammates. New addition Reggie Jackson was rather understated upon joining the Clippers but will be relied upon with Beverley and Williams out.
