  • (F) Kyle Kuzma – 24.8 MPG | 13.2 PPG | 3.9 RPG | .339 3P%

The Los Angeles Lakers remain at the top of the Western Conference with a more than comfortable lead at this point in the season. Four games ahead of the Nuggets, Jazz, and Clippers – the Lakers hope to be clinical on this road trip to secure their standing by the All-Star break.

It will be the fourth game of the Lakers’ five game road trip when they take on the Nets. They’ve been alternating wins and losses as of late, but will want to close this road trip strong if they hope to keep their standing. A drubbing from the Celtics on Monday may have been their wake-up call.

The Brooklyn Nets may not be the best scoring team in the league, but they certainly put up enough shots to keep themselves competitive. Los Angeles will have to lean on their defence and force the Nets into errors.

Brooklyn Nets (Home)

Head Coach: Kenny Atkinson {All-Time 108-180 | BKN}

Projected Starting Five: (G) Spencer Dinwiddie – (G) Garrett Temple – (F) Joe Harris – (F) Taurean Prince – (C) Jarrett Allen

Season Record: 18-24

Top Performers

  • (G) Kyrie Irving – 32.7 MPG | 26.5 PPG | 6.9 APG | 5.3 RPG
  • (G) Spencer Dinwiddie – 31.0 MPG | 21.8 PPG | 6.4 APG | 3.2 RPG
  • (F) Caris LeVert – 27.7 MPG | 14.9 PPG | 4.1 RPG | 3.5 APG

The Brooklyn Nets have been in freefall over the past couple of games. To add insult to injury, they are now struggling with the injury bug again as Kyrie Irving is back on the injury reserves list.

The Nets are coming off of an unfortunate loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Brooklyn showed that they can score with the best of them. But also that a backcourt of Kyrie Irving and Spencer Dinwiddie isn’t one that inspires defensive optimism.

They’ll have their hands full when they take on the Lakers. Brooklyn will want to cut this losing streak at four with a win over Los Angeles before they set out on a two-game road trip.

What’s at Stake?

The Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers have not met often since the inception of the young Brooklyn franchise. Over the course of 14 regular-season meetings, the Lakers lead the Nets 8-6.

A win for the Los Angeles Lakers would give them an additional half-game lead over the second-place team in the Western Conference.

A win for the Brooklyn Nets would give them a 3.5 game lead over the Detroit Pistons who trail them in ninth.

Questions to Answer

Can the Los Angeles Lakers find their defensive edge again?

How can the Brooklyn Nets climb out of their mid-season hole?

We are going to compare the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

The Lakers Are Long, But Are They Strong?

Los Angeles’ recent loss was telling for a few reasons. One, they were run out of the gym. Two, despite their tremendous length inside, they were bullied by the Celtics in the paint.

Boston outrebounded the Lakers 48-36 in the 139-107 Lakers loss on Martin Luther King Day. Despite having Javale McGee and Dwight Howard at the ready, it was the Celtics’ Enes Kanter that dominated the paint against them.

The Lakers will need to be wary when they take on the Nets. The duo of Jarrett Allen and DeAndre Jordan is like looking into a mirror for McGee and Howard. For the Lakers to take this match, their bigs need to establish themselves as the primary paint force.

Where Can the Nets Find A Win?

It seems like a simple question, but the Brooklyn Nets have been one of the worst teams in the league since the calendar turned to 2020. Brooklyn enter this game on the back of four straight losses and a 2-11 record over the last 13 games.

Beating the Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks are valuable victories but expected. When pressed, they haven’t had the quality to execute their offense or stop teams on defense. The Nets need to make it simpler.

If there is anywhere that the Lakers can be considered weak, it is in transition. The veteran team doesn’t defend the transition game well, being outscored by the Rockets on the break in a recent game. If Spencer Dinwiddie can lead a break-neck pace, they might have the speed to be competitive in this match.

Shooters Shoot, LA Just Can’t Find the Range

The stars were aligned for a fantastic matchup between the Celtics and the Lakers on MLK Day, but Los Angeles just weren’t able to put up a fight. The main reason was because of their inability to knock down anything consistent from three-point range.

No player that attempted at least three three-point field-goals shot more than 33% on the game. Danny Green, who led the team in three-point shots attempted, was only 2-6 in the game and failed to contribute much of anything else on the night.

They can hopefully get back on track when they face off with the Brooklyn Nets. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are mainstays in the offense. But they will need contributions from their supporting cast if they hope to take down a (possibly) Kyrie Irving-less Nets team.

Quality Over Quantity

The Brooklyn Nets are a trigger-happy team, to say the least. Head Coach Kenny Atkinson wants the Nets moving fast and shooting with confidence. Unfortunately, their efficiency has suffered as a result.

Brooklyn ranks in the top ten in both field-goals attempted and three-point field-goals attempted. They are unfortunately in the bottom three in field-goal percentage and three-point field-goal percentage. The inverse relationship of their shooting is a concern.

Simplifying the game is essential for the success of the Nets. Caris LeVert and Spencer Dinwiddie are their best options, but they also get most of their points in isolation. Freeing up capable shooters like Joe Harris and Taurean Prince will help them to develop their inside attack.

Los Angeles Lakers Roster Notes

(C) DeMarcus Cousins – 1 Jan 2020 – Out (Knee) – Cousins is starting to work out and the team has not ruled out that he will return to action this season as he recovers from a torn ACL, according to a report from Brandon Robinson of Heavy.com.

Brooklyn Nets Roster Notes

(C) DeAndre Jordan – 20 Jan 2020 – Day To Day (Finger) – Jordan did not play in Monday’s game (Jan. 20) against the 76ers.

(G) Kyrie Irving – 20 Jan 2020 – Day To Day (Hamstring) – Irving did not play in Monday’s game (Jan. 20) against the 76ers.

(F) Wilson Chandler – 20 Jan 2020 – Day To Day (Hamstring) – Chandler did not play in Monday’s game (Jan. 20) against the 76ers.

(F) Kevin Durant – 23 Oct 2019 – Out (Achilles) – Nets General Manager Sean Marks said the team does not plan on playing Durant this season, according to Ian Begley of SNY TV.

Head-to-Head: (C) Dwight Howard vs (C) Jarrett Allen

Two exciting centers face off when the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets meet. Howard is having a career resurgence as the sidekick to LeBron James, while Jarrett Allen is filling in nicely in the absence of Deandre Jordan.

(C) Dwight Howard (6-10, 265lb (208cm, 120kg) | USA | 15 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 34 LAL 43 19.9 7.7 7.6 0.7 .728 .600

The year of Dwight Howard continues. Not only has he rediscovered a role with the Los Angeles Lakers, he has been brilliant in tandem with any lineup the Lakers put on the court. He’s been rewarded and will now headline the upcoming 2020 NBA Dunk Contest.

Howard’s contributions will be essential to the success of the Los Angeles Lakers. He has averaged 13.0 rebounds over the last five games, which is a key stat as he takes on the athleticism of DeAndre Jordan and Jarrett Allen.

(C) Jarrett Allen (6-11, 237lb (211cm, 107kg) | Texas | 2 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 21 BKN 42 26.8 11.4 9.8 1.3 .653 .000

Jarrett Allen hasn’t hit the peaks that the Nets had been hoping of him when he entered his third season in the NBA, but he is still more than serviceable at the center position.

He’s been averaging 11.0 rebounds over his last three games, though his competition at center hasn’t been the best. It’ll be a matchup of length versus strength when he faces Howard and Allen will need to win it.

Los Angeles Lakers at Brooklyn Nets Predictions

Why the Los Angeles Lakers Will Win

The defense will be the key to victory for the Los Angeles Lakers. They need to make up for their loss against the Celtics, where their ability to stop the ball was exposed. Anthony Davis will have to helm their interior presence, in order to deal with the length at the attack of the Nets.

Why the Brooklyn Nets Will Win

The Brooklyn Nets can win this match if they can get the advantage in the paint. DeAndre Jordan is still a question for them, but Jarrett Allen has shown himself to be more than capable as the primary option in the paint. His combination with Dinwiddie in the screen and roll will power their offense.

WSN’s Pick

It is unlikely that the Los Angeles Lakers will allow another defensive collapse against a team that is as hot and cold as the Nets. The Lakers’ shooting and transition game expect to be the difference-maker.
