The Los Angeles Lakers are sitting comfortably atop the Western Conference table. With a record of 30-7, Showtime is a full four games ahead of the Nuggets who trail them in second place.

They are coming off of a simple blowout of the New York Knicks in their last match. On the positive side, the Lakers were able to use a number of their players in the 30-point win to rest their stars. Unfortunately, Anthony Davis went down with an injury.

The Lakers take on an injury-concerned Dallas Mavericks. While Porzingis is out, they will have to slow the brilliance of Luka Doncic who struggled in their last matchup.

Dallas Mavericks (Home)

Head Coach: Rick Carlisle {All-Time 774-641 | DET, IND, DAL}

The Mavericks have tumbled down the Western Conference table. At 23-14, the Mavericks are now sixth in the West. They’ve hit a rough patch as of late, going 5-5 in their last ten. On top of struggling without Porzingis in the lineup.

The Dallas Mavericks are coming off of a loss to the Denver Nuggets. While they played them well throughout the game offensively, they struggled to make crucial stops in the clutch.

The Mavs will be looking for some redemption when they face off with the Los Angeles Lakers. In the star-making matchup between James and Doncic, James came out the winner. Doncic is sure to try and fight his way back to James’ level, who took the first round of their heavyweight matchup.

What’s at Stake?

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks have a very one-sided history. In 160 regular-season games, the Lakers are leading the Mavericks 112-48.

A win for the Los Angeles Lakers would solidify their place at first in the Western Conference.

A win for the Dallas Mavericks would bring them within a game and a half of the Utah Jazz who are fifth in the Western Conference.

Questions to Answer

Can the Los Angeles Lakers bench step up?

How will the Dallas Mavericks fare without Kristaps Porzingis?

We are going to compare the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

Can the Lakers Slow Down Doncic Once Again?

In the Lakers’ last matchup with the Mavericks, all things went to plan. The young star, who is drawing to LeBron James himself, struggled from the field. They’ll hope to do the same this time out.

The Lakers swarmed Doncic in his last meeting with them. Danny Green, Avery Bradley, and Rajon Rondo all took turns slowing the young star. Holding to 5-14 shooting and forcing six turnovers, the Lakers were masterful in slowing the young star.

Unfortunately, Doncic has been excellent in his last five games since their last meeting. He is averaging 34.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 8.8 assists since then. The Lakers will be playing with fire if they focus all their concerns on Doncic.

The Mavericks’ Defence Still Needs Work

The Dallas Mavericks played the Nuggets well early but were unable to manage the Denver offense down the stretch. For a team that scrambles opponents off of the line, the Mavericks struggled with the simple pick and roll.

The combination of Murray and Jokic in the screen and roll was too much. Unfortunately, the Mavs will see more of the same between LeBron James and Javale McGee/Dwight Howard. Luka Doncic has been brilliant offensively, but he is still lacking on the defensive side of the ball.

It will be up to their mobile big men, Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell, to help the associated guard navigate the incoming screens. Delon Wright’s insertion in the starting lineup will be crucial as well, as his length and quickness can help combat most of their issues switching on defense.

Who Can Add Something for the Lakers?

There’s a lot of talk amongst the Lakers and the league about who can help them take the next step. Whether that be Darren Collison or Kevin Love, what is more interesting is the Lakers options that are already on their bench.

The Lakers are purposefully loaded with players that can offer different things on the court. McGee and Howard are excellent shot-blocking roll options, who have also been able to hit some threes. Bradley and Green are three-and-D threats, while Kuzma is an all-out scorer.

With Davis possibly out, all members have a chance to step it up. Expect Kuzma to be the one to get the spotlight. The third-year forward is scoring at a surprisingly efficient rate in only 23.4 minutes per game – the lowest of his career.

Focus Will Carry the Mavericks Through

When the Mavericks lost to the Nuggets in their last match, they failed to capitalize on where they needed to win the match. It shows some immaturity, but that won’t be forgiven against a team as talented as the Lakers.

The Dallas Mavericks lost their last match by only one point. Their failures lay in eight missed free throws and allowing their opponents 19 points off of turnovers.

The Mavericks committed 18 turnovers in their last game against the Lakers. Doncic accounted for six of those. If they hope to beat Los Angeles this time out, they must limit mistakes and open themselves up for Doncic under pressure.

Los Angeles Lakers Roster Notes

(F) Anthony Davis – 7 Jan 2020 – Day To Day (Sacral Contusion) – Davis Jr. left Tuesday’s (Dec. 7) game with a sacral contusion. X-Rays were negative according to Tania Ganguli of the L.A. Times.

(C) DeMarcus Cousins – 1 Jan 2020 – Out (Knee) – Cousins is starting to work out and the team has not ruled out that he will return to action this season as he recovers from a torn ACL, according to a report from Brandon Robinson of Heavy.com.

Dallas Mavericks Roster Notes

(F) Kristaps Porzingis – 8 Jan 2020 – Day To Day (Knee/Illness) – Porzingis did not play in Wednesday’s game (Jan. 8) against the Nuggets.

(G) Ryan Broekhoff – 1 Jan 2020 – Out (Fibula) – The Mavs announced that there is no timetable for Broekhoff’s return as he deals with a fracture of the proximal head of his left fibula.

Head-to-Head: (G) Rajon Rondo vs (G) Delon Wright

Versatile point guards are the matchup of the evening when the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks face off.

Rajon Rondo needs to be more effective as the primary playmaker when LeBron James hits the pine. On the other end, Delon Wright has been slumping. With Porzingis out, their other prized offseason acquisition needs to provide support.

(G) Rajon Rondo (6-1, 186lb (185cm, 84kg) | Kentucky | 13 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 33 LAL 25 21.0 7.0 3.4 5.4 .404 .369

In his last five games, Rajon Rondo has been struggling. Considered a valuable veteran in utility, Rondo hasn’t been able to positively impact his side. He is averaging 3.2 points, 4.6 assists, and 2.8 rebounds.

Rondo needs to be more effective against the Mavericks. When James goes to the bench, it will be Rondo who is running the show. His playmaking is essential to the success of the Lakers offense which lacks creativity outside of him and James.

(G) Delon Wright (6-5, 183lb (196cm, 83kg) | Utah | 4 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 27 DAL 35 20.6 7.5 3.6 3.2 .492 .400

Wright saw his introduction into the starting lineup for the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday’s matchup with the Denver Nuggets. He has been struggling as a bench player as of late, but insertion into the starting lineup will be helpful against the swing-happy Lakers.

Delon Wright is a versatile point guard who will be valuable when they face the Lakers. Regardless of his perimeter matchup, Wright’s length of disrupting shooters will be essential in the success of the Mavericks.

Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks Predictions

Why the Los Angeles Lakers Will Win

If the Los Angeles Lakers want to take this match, they will need to break their opponent’s fantastic ability to run teams off of the line. LeBron James will be at the center of their success, regardless of Anthony Davis’ status.

Why the Dallas Mavericks Will Win

Much like the Lakers and James, Luka Doncic will be at the center of the Mavericks’ success. With Porzingis out, the Mavericks no longer have an option in the post. To win, they’ll have to double-down on their fantastic ability to spread defenses and convert from deep.

WSN’s Pick

The Los Angeles Lakers showed their maturity in their last win over the Dallas Mavericks. This time out will be more of the same, considering Dallas is missing a key piece in Kristaps Porzingis.
