After a down season, the Los Angeles Lakers didn’t waste any time retooling their roster for playoff contention. Their biggest take of the summer was Anthony Davis – a transcendent forward who combines with James to make one of the best duos in the NBA.

The Lakers didn’t stop there though. After hiring Frank Vogel they loaded their bench with veteran role players. Danny Green, Avery Bradley, and Dwight Howard headline a surprisingly capable reserve group.

The Lakers look to have the upper hand in their first match against the Clippers. Their versatility on defense should give the Clippers fits. The Lakers must pay mind to the capable three-point shooters on the Clippers’ roster.

The Los Angeles Clippers shocked many during their 2019 playoff run. While they didn’t come close to the finals, they were more than attractive enough to draw not one, but two superstars to their roster.

After losing to the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round, Paul George gave up on his Oklahoma team and found his way to the Clippers. Encouraged by the fact that LA also attracted NBA Champion Kawhi Leonard, the Clippers formed the only NBA duo that could challenge James and Davis.

The Clippers have their hands full against the Lakers. They are unlikely to have George for the opener, so Leonard will have to receive ample support from his supporting cast. The Clippers have the effort to keep up, whether they have the quality without George is another question.

What’s At Stake for Lakers vs Clippers?

Having shared an arena since the Clippers’ inception, both Los Angeles sides have a heated yet one-sided rivalry. In 152 regular-season meetings, the Lakers lead the Clippers 102-52.

The Lakers will want to assert their dominance over the Los Angeles market with a win on opening night. It will set the tone for their season.

The LA Clippers will be shorthanded when they face off against the building rivals but will rely on their organization and depth to overcome their struggles.

Anthony Davis is in the Spotlight

After years of underachievement with the New Orleans Pelicans, Davis finally has what he wants in a competitive roster. Although James is on his team, Davis will likely take the starring offensive role for his side.

There’s no doubting his ability on offense or defense. However, with a better supporting cast, Davis’ playmaking ability will be on display. There’s not an individual defender on the Clippers that can handle Davis, so he will surely have to pass out of help.

With Kawhi Leonard taking the lead for the Clippers, Davis will be asked to defend the paint against him in key moments. With Davis at the rim, individual attacks at the rim are unlikely to work. Keep an eye on Davis’ ability to close-out as he is drawn out of the paint.

The Clippers Reserves Are Under the Microscope

LA has its own stars to boast, but in this match against the Lakers, they will need extra support from their reserves. Their bench unit isn’t as impressive as the Lakers’, but they certainly have the mindset to compete.

Keep an eye on the likes of Landry Shamet in particular. He is a dangerous shooter from three-point range and has an eye for coming off screens and getting open for three – a la JJ Redick.

Lou Williams, the reigning sixth man of the year, is certain to lead the bench unit in scoring. But even rebounding, defending, and hustle plays will need to be a team effort.

The Lake Show is a Team Affair

There’s a lot to like when LeBron James and Anthony Davis grace the court in the same colors. However, it is the Lakers’ role players that will truly make the difference in this match.

Danny Green, Quinn Cook, and Jared Dudley all share a common skill – they can shoot the ball with the best of the NBA. With so much attention being drawn by their stars, they will receive more than enough open opportunities.

Each will also be responsible for defense. LeBron James is brilliant offensively but is passive, to say the least on the defensive end. It will be their job to corral the Clippers players into the waiting arms of Anthony Davis at the rim.

Does Doc Rivers Have the Plan?

Doc Rivers is a fantastic coach. With a positive all-time record and a history managing some of the most difficult stars, he seems the man to take the Clippers to the promised land – beyond the Los Angeles Lakers.

Already a man down to start the year, Rivers will need to get the most out of his less-used pieces to take down the Lakers.

JaMychal Green, Rodney McGruder, and Patrick Patterson are all role players that are coming off of a down season. Their talents defensively will certainly be called upon to slow down the Lakers’ potent attack. Rivers’ management of matchups will be key.

X-Factors: LeBron James (LAL) vs Kawhi Leonard (LAC)

Did you want a good opening night matchup? How about one of NBA history’s greatest ever player taking on a resurgent star coming for his spot?

LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard are always the players to watch when the Lakers and the Clippers come to blows. One of the NBA’s most transcendent offensive talents versus one of its greatest defensive talents, a matchup

(F) LeBron James (6-8, 250lb (203cm, 113kg) | Saint Vincent-Saint Mary (HS) | 16 Years)

This will be a season that defines LeBron James’ career. The first game of this season, is against one of his greatest competitors for the name of best NBA player. James has a new cast, but it’s the cast he built.

LeBron in the pick-and-roll is always dangerous, but he will have to navigate Leonard’s long arms. With more options than ever, don’t be surprised to see James delegate some responsibility and spot-up to take Leonard out of the paint.

(F) Kawhi Leonard (6-7, 230lb (201cm, 104kg) | San Diego State | 8 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
18-19 27 TOR 60 34.0 26.6 7.3 3.3 .496 .371

Kawhi Leonard leads his LA Clippers a man down, but more than prepared to take on the Lakers’ threat. The Clippers’ proved themselves quite the threat during last season’s playoffs and the addition of Leonard and George only makes them more threatening.

The key for Leonard will be his ability to put the ball in the basket. With George out, he will take on the brunt of the scoring load with only Lou Williams as his main support.

Los Angeles Lakers at LA Clippers Predictions and Odds

Why the Los Angeles Lakers Will Win

LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Danny Green, Rajon Rondo, shall we go on? The Los Angeles Lakers are an incredibly built team. They maintain organizational strength in both the starting lineup and the bench.

Their biggest weakness will be how they get on as a team. Frank Vogel is a good coach, but he’s never managed the quality and personalities that he has in LA. His adjustments will be crucial to their success.

Why the Los Angeles Clippers Will Win

The Clippers will be missing Paul George, but a Kawhi Leonard-led team is always a threat. He hasn’t played much in the preseason, but that is surely in order to prepare for this game.

The Clippers are an excellent inside-out team, with great motor on defense. If the likes of Zubac and Harrell can seal off the paint, the Clippers will have a good chance.
