The Los Angeles Lakers continue to show their impressive quality. When one player misses the mark, another is there to pick up the slack. As each game passes, the Lakers are looking more and more unstoppable.

Los Angeles is coming off of a win over the Orlando Magic. The Magic are a defensive team but lack creativity on the attacking half. It showed as the Lakers’ stars struggled in places, but their overall quality was too much for the young Magic.

They now face the second team of their Florida trip, the Miami Heat. Much more talented on both ends of the court, the Miami Heat will prove a tougher challenge for the Lakers. Jimmy Butler leads a cast of unexpected young stars, ready to prove their game isn’t a fluke.

The Miami Heat are making quite a name for themselves. Entering the season, most projected the Miami Heat as a fringe playoff team. It seems that Jimmy Butler’s work ethic is rubbing off, as the Heat are receiving incredible performances from surprising players.

Miami is coming off of an impressive win over the Atlanta Hawks. When it all seemed over Miami was able to rally together, force overtime, and take home a well-deserved win. The Heat are filled to the brim with potential stars.

Questions to answer

Are the Lakers unstoppable with a full complement?

Can the Heat get more from their bench?

We are going to compare the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

The Lakers Defence Moves With… Avery Bradley?

If the Los Angeles Lakers have had any criticism, it has been their commitment to the defensive end of the court. While they’ve been able to dominate offensively, their passiveness stopping the ball won’t be acceptable forever.

While Anthony Davis has a chance to win Defensive Player of the Year, it was Avery Bradley that helped command their defensive presence. In 16 games missed by Bradley, they were only able to hold a team under 90 points in one.

Bradley’s tenacity on the defensive end isn’t just valuable individually, it encourages their squad. Bradley was rusty in his return against the Orlando Magic, but his shot is certainly less valuable than his defending.

Miami Must Improve On Their Mistakes

While the Heat were able to take down the Hawks in their last game, the Los Angeles Lakers are an entirely different beast. They’ll have to learn from their last game against the Lakers, where they lost 95-80.

The Heat struggled from everywhere on the court. They shot a poor 35.0% from the field and an even worse 17.1% from the three-point range.

They were, at least, able to hold the Lakers to 25% from three in that game. But they gave up the long-ball and allowed a concentrated paint attack.

The Heat have a chance at redemption against the Lakers on their home court. They proved that they can beat a lesser team with the odds against them, whether or not they can do it against a top side will be determined by their defensive ability.

The Lakers Must Start Strong

The Los Angeles Lakers are a formidable team. Their strength lies in their ability to win games from the first quarter. While the margins are thin, due to their mere three losses, the Laker’s chances of winning are better when they lead the first quarter by at least five.

The Lakers will face off against the Heat, Hawks, Pacers, and Bucks over the course of their road trip. Three of those teams are Eastern Conference contenders, the Lakers will have little margin for error.

The Lakers started off strong against the Magic, getting 12 points from Davis and James, while also getting 10 points from their bench in the first quarter.

Even better, the Lakers held the Magic to a mere nine points in the first quarter. While it’s unlikely they’ll hold the Heat to the same scoring amount, Los Angeles needs the same effort.

The Heat Bench Needs to Produce

The Miami Heat’s victory over the Atlanta Hawks was impressive. Their starting five looked unstoppable throughout the match, but their bench left much to be desired.

Whereas the starting five for the Miami Heat produced 120 points, 29 assists, and 38 rebounds, the bench provided very little in comparison. Between the likes of Kelly Olynyk, Tyler Herro, and Derrick Jones, the Heat received only 11 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists.

The Lakers are too dangerous of a team for the Heat not to attack with all of their weapons. Herro and Olynyk were a combined 0-11 from the field, while Jones was 4-9. Miami will need much more production than that to beat Los Angeles.

Head-to-Head: (G) Danny Green vs (G) Duncan Robinson

In a matchup where the defensive focus will rest on each team’s respective stars, the key players of the night will be between each team’s snipers.

Danny Green‘s three-and-D ability is well-respected around the league. On the other side, Duncan Robinson has overcome the odds to be one of the league’s premier three-point threats.

(G) Danny Green (6-6, 215lb (198cm, 97kg) | North Carolina | 10 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB STL FG% 3P%
19-20 32 LAL 25 25.5 8.2 3.8 1.2 .429 .379

Danny Green failed to meet the mark against the Orlando Magic in his last match. While the Lakers were threatened by the defensively adept Magic, Danny Green wasn’t able to act as a capable three-point outlet.

In his last match, Green was 4-11 from the field and 0-6 from three. He was still able to contribute elsewhere, adding five rebounds, three assists, and a block and steal. Regardless, his range is what’s most important for the Lakers to succeed.

(G) Duncan Robinson (6-7, 215lb (201cm, 97kg) | Michigan | 1 Year)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 25 MIA 24 26.7 11.8 3.0 0.9 .483 .449

Duncan Robinson has proved to be one of the hottest stories of the season. Starting in Division III and now a starter for the Miami Heat, there are few who have overcome the odds like Duncan Robinson.

Robinson lit it up for the Heat in an overtime win against the Atlanta Hawks. In 43 minutes he scored 34 points and contributed four assists and three rebounds on 12-16 shooting and 10-14 from deep. Robinson’s form will be integral to the Heat’s success.

Los Angeles Lakers at Miami Heat Predictions and Odds

The odds will be updated as they are made available.

Why the Los Angeles Lakers Will Win

The Los Angeles Lakers’ two-way ability is second to none in the NBA. The odds are in their favor against the Heat, depending on their injury situation. If the Lakers can find their range from deep, the Heat won’t have a chance.

Why the Miami Heat Will Win

The Miami Heat succeed when their defense is on point. Considering the diversity of the Los Angeles Lakers’ attack, Miami can only win if they can limit the Lakers’ opportunities. Keying in on LeBron James is important – easier said than done.

WSN’s Pick

The Los Angeles Lakers have looked unstoppable so far. While the Heat are a strong defensive team, they don’t project to have the weapons to compete with the Lakers offense. It should be another victory for LA.
