Dallas Mavericks vs LA Clippers Predictions and Picks

The Mavericks had the Clippers on the ropes before Porzingis was ejected, but LA was able to pull off the win. With players returning to form after a lengthy period off the court (Beverley, Harrell), we expect LA to take control of Game 2 as well.

Dallas Must Take Better Care of the Ball

It was the talking point of the game, the Dallas Mavericks committed 21 turnovers while forcing just 11 out of the Clippers. While the Mavericks were bold offensively, they failed themselves with their inability to maintain control of the ball.

All eyes are on Luka Doncic, who accounted for 11 of the team’s 21 turnovers for the game. While he was excellent scoring the ball, he gave up almost as any opportunities as he scored on.

Dallas’ best playmaker outside of Doncic is probably Delon Wright, who played just six minutes in Game 1. Knowing that LA will blitz Doncic on the ball, the Mavs would do well to employ some secondary playmaking.

Leonard and George Have No Match

The Dallas Mavericks are already a poor defensive team. When the Clippers faced them in Game 1, it was unlikely that the two LA stars would meet much resistance. What they received, was a red carpet to the hoop.

Leonard and George combined for 56 points, 14 rebounds, nine assists, and five steals on 21 of 43 shooting from the field and five of 18 shooting from deep.

The star pair were criticized for their lack of play together in the regular season, but it’s clear their post-season performances were all that mattered to the LA Clippers. While they face some opposition at the rim, they excelled without Porzingis guarding the paint. With him back in the fold, Leonard and George will have to improve on that 27.7% three-point shooting average.

Mavericks Key Player: (F) Kristaps Porzingis

Kristaps Porzingis was one of the stars of the league’s return schedule, as he averaged 30.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game on 47.6% shooting.

He was off to a respectable start through 19 minutes of play in Game 1, however, two questionable technical foul calls had him ejected from the game. The Mavericks weren’t the same with him off the court.

When Porzingis is unavailable, the Mavericks are a different team. While Doncic is a capable star all on his own, without another All-Star level outlet the Clippers were able to take control of the game. Porzingis’ performance when he returns is sure to inspire, and defined as the Mavericks move forward.

Clippers Key Player: (G) Patrick Beverley

Patrick Beverley is likely the fifth option any time he is on the court for the Clippers. While he is a capable ball-handler and three-point shooter, his main value is as a defender.

Beverley struggled in Game 1, as he was tasked with guarding second-year star Luka Doncic. Doncic’s command of the ball is impressive at any position, forcing Beverley in difficult situations due to his lack of size.

Patrick Beverley is sure to make the correct defensive adjustments for Game 2. It is more than likely he won’t face the same foul trouble, but that doesn’t mean Dallas won’t try to put him in beneficial situations again.
