Season Record: 26-34

Projected Starting Five: (G) Lonzo Ball – (G) Jrue Holiday – (F) Brandon Ingram – (F) Zion Williamson – (C) Derrick Favors

  • (G) Jrue Holiday – 34.8 MPG | 19.1 PPG | 6.8 APG | 4.6 RPG

The New Orleans Pelicans are on the outside looking in on the playoff race. Not only do they need to gain ground on the eighth-place Memphis Grizzlies, as well as hope for some fortunate results from the Portland Trail Blazers and the Sacramento Kings.

The Pelicans are coming off of a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. They weren’t able to convert on their offensive execution in the match was poor. On top of the fact that they couldn’t overcome the Lakers’ defense, the Pelicans showed they have a long road to travel if they want to make the playoffs.

They take on a Dallas Mavericks team with one of the best in the world in Luka Doncic. While the Mavericks are injured across the board, the Pelicans will still have to contend with their very versatile defense.

Dallas Mavericks (Home)

Head Coach: Rick Carlisle {All-Time 788-652 | DET, IND, DAL}

Season Record: 37-25

Projected Starting Five: (G) Luka Doncic – (G) Tim Hardaway Jr – (F) Courtney Lee – (F) Dorian Finney-Smith – (C) Maxi Kleber

  • (G) Tim Hardaway Jr – 28.1 MPG | 15.5 PPG | 3.1 RPG | .403 3P%

The Dallas Mavericks are comfortably seventh in the Western Conference. They lead the Memphis Grizzlies by a wide margin, but certainly have the time and opportunity to make their way all the way to fifth in the West.

Dallas is coming off of a disappointing loss to the Chicago Bulls. They simply weren’t able to keep up with the Bulls’ offensive ball movement, as every Bull was able to contribute to the box score.

The Mavericks will need to get more from their bench if they hope to be competitive with the New Orleans Pelicans. Other than Boban Marjanovic, the Mavericks got next to nothing from their bench unit.

What’s At Stake?

The Dallas Mavericks and the New Orleans Pelicans don’t meet regularly, but when they do it has been one-sided. The Mavericks lead the all-time series against the Pelicans 44-22.

A win for the Dallas Mavericks would bring them within a half-game of the sixth-place Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference.

A win for the New Orleans Pelicans would push them to ninth in the Eastern Conference.

Questions to answer

Can New Orleans match intensity on both ends?

Will the Dallas Mavericks get something out of their bench?

We are going to compare the New Orleans Pelicans and the Dallas Mavericks in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

NOP: The Pelicans Are Not A Finished Product

The young Pelicans fought bravely against the Lakers in their previous match, but they certainly showed that they still have some growing pains to overcome. While they fought bravely throughout, a late-game collapse was always coming.

With less than two minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Pelicans actually had a 101-95 lead. From that moment on though, they were outscored 27-13. The Pelicans can be a strong defensive unit, but the youthfulness of their team is easily taken advantage of at times.

Since the end of January, the Pelicans have only defeated plus-.500 teams twice. While Zion is an incredible piece, the team is not complete. In order to defeat the Mavericks, the Pelicans need to show they can put their whole game together. Their defensive half needs to match their offensive ability.

DAL: Are the Dallas Reserves Enough?

In their last game against the Chicago Bulls, the Dallas Mavericks bench players struggled to make an impact. While Luka Doncic is still the most important player on the court, they need more from their reserves to stay competitive.

Of the Mavericks’ 107 points against the Bulls, they only received 19 points off of the bench. Rick Carlisle encourages an egalitarian attack, but when players are struggling to finish it makes them a neutral offensive threat.

They can’t risk the same issues against the New Orleans Pelicans. In order to win the day, the bench unit will have to push the pace for easy buckets. On top of finding their shooting form.

Head-to-Head: (F) Brandon Ingram vs (G) Luka Doncic

Two Western Conference All-Stars face-off as Luka Doncic and Brand Ingram lead their teams. Both are excellent scoring threats that will hopefully improve on a poor shooting performance in their last match.

(F) Brandon Ingram (6-7, 190lb (201cm, 86kg) | Duke | 3 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 22 NOP 52 34.1 24.6 6.3 4.3 .470 .392

Ingram is coming off of a dreadful performance against his former club the Los Angeles Lakers. He was 5-23 from the floor in almost 30 minutes of play. To add an issue with his performance, he also had three turnovers on the night. Ingram has been alternating efficient and inefficient nights recently, so the Pelicans will need his firepower to beat the Mavericks.

(G) Luka Doncic (6-7, 218lb (201cm, 98kg) | Slovenia | 1 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 20 DAL 49 33.0 28.5 9.3 8.8 .461 .315

What else is there to say about Luka Doncic? He is a fantastic player for the Dallas Mavericks. He is coming off of an awful shooting performance from deep where he went 1-8 against the Chicago Bulls. It’s easy to count misses when a team loses, more importantly, is for Doncic to remain the stellar playmaker he is if his shooting form maintains.
