New York Knicks (Away)

Head Coach: David Fizdale {All-Time 71-126 | MEM, NYK}

Season Record: 4-10

Projected Starting Five: (G) Frank Ntilikina – (G) RJ Barrett – (F) Marcus Morris – (F) Julius Randle – (C) Taj Gibson

Top Performers:

  • (F) Marcus Morris 33.7 MPG | 18.6 PPG | 5.9 RPG | .455 3P%

  • (G) RJ Barrett 33.6 MPG | 15.8 PPG | 5.6 RPG | 3.6 APG

Guess who’s sitting at .500? Not the New York Knicks, but they are .500 in their last four matches. For a team that is 4-10, that is a massive improvement on their recent performances.

They are also happily coming off of a blowout over the Cleveland Cavaliers, drawing them level with the Cavs in blowouts against one another.

The Knicks defence is what powered them to their win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The held their opponents to 105 points, while also forcing 19 turnovers to their seven. The Sixers a jump up in quality, but their mindset should be the same.

Philadelphia 76ers (Home)

Head Coach: Brett Brown {All-Time 186-319 | PHI}

Projected Starting Five: (G) Ben Simmons – (G) Josh Richardson – (F) Tobias Harris – (F) Al Horford – (C) Joel Embiid

Season Record: 8-4

Top Performers:

  • (C) Joel Embiid – 29.0 MPG | 22.9 PPG | 11.4 RPG | 1.4 BPG
  • (F) Tobias Harris – 34.5 MPG | 17.6 PPG | 7.9 RPG | .255 3P%
  • (F) Al Horford – 31.8 MPG | 15.0 PPG | 7.1 RPG | 4.2 APG

The Philadelphia 76ers are coming off of a comfortable win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. They dominated their lesser competition, behind a concentrated team effort.

Due to the lopsided scoreline, 114-95, the Sixers were able to give everyone a fair shot on the court. Most impressively, the Sixers bench was an average of +3 while they were on the floor.

The Knicks are in a similar class to the Cleveland Cavaliers. On paper the Sixers should have no problems dispatching the Knicks, but New York is coming off of a strong performance themselves.

What’s At Stake for the Knicks vs 76ers Match?

The New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers are two of the NBA’s most historic franchises. In 302 regular season meetings, the Sixers lead the Knicks 162-140.

A win for the New York Knicks would push them even further up the Eastern conference table, as high as tenth.

A win for the Philadelphia 76ers would keep them in place, right behind the Toronto Raptors in fifth.

Questions to answer

Can the Knicks maintain their form and beat a giant?

Will the Sixers begin a streak to catch back up in the East?

We are going to compare the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

A Strong Start Is Needed for New York

While the final scoreline of the Knicks’ recent blowout win over the Cavs will be the focus, more emphasis needs to be put on their performance in the first quarter that setup their eventual victory.

Limiting the Cavaliers to only 17 first quarter field-goal attempts, the Knicks’s defence was swarming. On top of that, Julius Randle’s first quarter play was integral to their success.

Randle scored 15 points in the first quarter against the Cavs on 7-9 shooting from the field. The Sixers own a more stout defence than the Cavaliers, but the Knicks will have to maintain their scoring punch if they want to take down their foes.

More From Tobias Harris

Against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Philadelphia 76ers were too much to handle. Their scoring efficiency was excellent across the board, but they were captained on that night by Tobias Harris.

Harris has been an offensive threat his whole career, but this season he’s taken a notable dip from three-point range. Against the Cavaliers it all came together in his favour though.

In 30 minutes of action Harris contributed 27 points on 12-14 shooting to go along with five rebounds, four steals, and two blocks and steals. He provided an all-around effort and leadership that the Sixers have been looking for all year and could lead them into the future.

Can the Knicks Force Philly Into Mistakes?

In New York’s last win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, it was their defence that helped them win the day. A top team in terms of ball protection, the Cavaliers were frustrated by New York’s defensive energy.

Against the Cavs the Knicks were able to force 19 turnovers. On top of that the Knicks only committed seven turnovers themselves, something uncommon amongst them as New York is 20th in the league in turnovers committed per game.

Philadelphia are in the bottom third of the league in turnovers committed at 17.5 per game. New York won’t succeed merely by forcing turnovers, but they must score off of those turnovers to stay competitive.

Scoring Efficiency Is Essential for Philly

Tobias Harris was great against the Cavaliers, but it wasn’t just him that contributed on the court. As a whole, the Sixers had an effective field-goal percentage of 59.2% against the Cavaliers.

Only three Sixers players that saw playing time converted on less than half of their field-goal attempts. At the same time, only Josh Richardson shot below 40% on the game much to Philly’s surprise.

The Knicks have the NBA’s 19th ranked defence, so scoring on them shouldn’t be difficult. However the Sixers have looked lost offensively all season, so they can’t settle for difficult looks and compromise their efficiency.

New York Knicks Roster Notes

(G) Elfrid Payton – 18 Nov 2019 – Day To Day (Hamstring) – Payton Jr. did not play in Monday’s (Nov. 18) game against the Cavs.

(G-F) Reggie Bullock – 13 Nov 2019 – Out (Cervical disc herniation) – Bullock has been cleared to participate in non-contact drills and will be re-evaluated in early December.

Philadelphia 76ers Roster Notes

The Philadelphia 76ers have no injuries to report.

Head-to-Head: (C) Mitchell Robinson vs (C) Joel Embiid

The battle of the night will occur at the centre position between the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Mitchell Robinson is a young, springy centre with a knack for stopping players in the paint. He’ll have his hands full against one of the best paint scorers in the league in Joel Embiid.

(C) Mitchell Robinson (7-0, 223lb (213cm, 101kg) | Western Kentucky | 1 Year)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB BLK FG% 3P%
19-20 21 NYK 10 18.9 10.7 7.0 1.9 .710 n/a

Despite playing less minutes per game than last season, Mitchell Robinson’s statistical contributions have increased in almost every category, despite already missing four of the Knicks’ first 14 games.

He’ll have his hands full against Joel Embiid, who is an inside-outside threat of near unmatched proportions at his position. Robinson will not only have to defend one-on-one, but direct his Knicks’ defence as Philly works through Embiid on the perimeter.

(C) Joel Embiid (7-0, 250lb (213cm, 113kg) | Kansas/Cameroon | 3 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB BLK FG% 3P%
19-20 25 PHI 9 29.0 22.9 11.4 1.4 .469 .389

Joel Embiid’s statistics are down across the board this season, and it isn’t just due to early season injury issues.

Embiid is less of a focal point to the Sixers offence this year. With so many weapons available to Philadelphia, Embiid has been pushed out to the perimeter where he is less effective. His 38.9% shooting rate from deep will be essential when taking on a prolific shot-blocker like Robinson.

New York Knicks at Philadelphia 76ers Predictions and Picks

Why the New York Knicks Will Win

If the New York Knicks are able to show some defensive intensity, they may have a chance against the Sixers who are struggling to score the ball. At the same time, New Yotk needs to show their own offensive might against a versatile Sixers team.

Why the Philadelphia 76ers Will Win

Philly’s defence is strong enough to lock down the New York Knicks. But with some young and athletic talent on the side of New York, the Sixers’ own offence could be compromised. Pragmatic attacking play and strong defending will allow the Sixers to take down the Knicks.
