Philadelphia 76ers (Away)

Head Coach: Brett Brown {All-Time 209-331 | PHI}

Projected Starting Five: (G) Ben Simmons – (G) Shake Milton – (F) Tobias Harris – (F) Al Horford – (C) Joel Embiid

Top Performers:

  • (C) Joel Embiid – 30.9 MPG | 23.4 PPG | 12.3 RPG | 1.3 BPG
  • (F) Tobias Harris – 34.5 MPG | 19.4 PPG | 6.7 RPG | .358 3P%
  • (G) Ben Simmons – 36.0 MPG | 16.3 PPG | 7.8 RPG | 2.2 SPG

The Philadelphia 76ers season continues to be an up and down affair. However, they’ve found a decent run of form as of late, winning their seven of their last ten. Currently sixth in the Eastern Conference, a win over the Celtics can vault them to as high as fourth in the table.

The Sixers are struggling with some injuries, but have been able to get by due to the stellar play of Ben Simmons. They maintain an incredible presence in the paint, which has helped them to overcome some difficult perimeter defensive nights.

When Philadelphia takes on the Celtics, they will be facing one of the league’s most disciplined teams. They are not spectacular in any area, but the Sixers will need to force some unconventional turnovers against a team adept at protecting the ball.

Boston Celtics (Home)

Head Coach: Brad Stevens {All-Time 301-237 | BOS}

Projected Starting Five: (G) Kemba Walker – (G) Marcus Smart – (F) Jaylen Brown – (F) Gordon Hayward – (C) Daniel Theis

Top Performers:

  • (G) Kemba Walker – 32.1 MPG | 22.3 PPG | 5.0 APG | .388 3P%
  • (F) Jayson Tatum – 34.0 MPG | 21.5 PPG | 6.9 RPG | 1.4 SPG
  • (G) Jaylen Brown – 33.7 MPG | 20.1 PPG | 6.6 RPG | 1.2 SPG

The Boston Celtics have slowly tumbled down the Eastern Conference rankings. Currently sitting fourth in the table, the Celtics have been overtaken by both the Miami Heat and the Toronto Raptors.

Boston is coming off of an impressive run of play, having won six of their last ten games. While the play of their opposition has been tough to overcome, their maturity on the ball and on the defensive end has seen them through in decisive moments.

The Celtics have lost to Sixers three times this season. They have been unable to overcome Philadelphia’s size in the paint. While Theis and Kanter have shown potential on both sides, the play of Embiid is likely to define the course of another game.

What’s At Stake?

The Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers have a fierce rivalry in the Eastern Conference. Over 301 regular-season games, the Celtics lead the Sixers 177-124.

A win for the Philadelphia 76ers could vault them as high as fourth in the Eastern Conference.

A win for the Boston Celtics would bring them level with the Miami Heat for third in the Eastern Conference.

Questions to answer

Will Philadelphia complete their four-game season sweep of the Celtics?

Can Boston improve on their paltry previous efforts against Philadelphia?

We are going to compare the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

PHI: Stop the Three!

The Boston Celtics are an efficient shooting team at a distance. They are 15th in the league in both three-point percentage and overall field-goal percentage. While they aren’t completely dominant from distance, the Celtics can manufacture some excellent opportunities.

The Sixers are incredibly focused on limiting their opponents from three-point range. They rank first in the league in three-pointers allowed, but are 14th in three-point percentage allowed. While they run teams off the line, their enthusiasm can backfire.

With shot-blockers like Joel Embiid and Norvel Pelle in the paint, the Sixers have little concern when they get beat from deep. Keeping close to secondary shooters like Smart, Hayward, and Brown will be key to the Sixers’ victory.

BOS: It Starts on the Wing

There is no secret to the Boston Celtics’ game plan. They don’t play inside-out. They play outside-out. While their players are capable slashers, their ability to attack from the perimeter is one of the best in the league.

Jayson Tatum and Kemba Walker have earned their All-Star berths this year. While Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, and Gordon Hayward continue to contribute at a high rate for Brad Stevens’ team.

That group of five players accounts for 82.8% of their team’s points per game average. The Celtics need to get their perimeter players going early. They’ll have to overcome Ben Simmons at the point of attack, but their ball movement will be the key in dismantling the Sixers’ long defense.

PHI: Maintain Your Efficiency

The Philadelphia 76ers were excellent in their back to back wins over the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. One a true title contender and another a bottom feeder in the league, the Sixers confidently took care of business against both.

Over the course of their back to back wins the Sixers shot 51.9% from the field while allowing their opponents only 44.2% from the field and, even better, 29.6% from the three-point range. Their tenacity on both ends of the court allowed them double-digit wins in both outings.

The Philadelphia 76ers have a worthy opponent in the Boston Celtics. While they’re not as talented as the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston has shown a defensive grit – fifth in the league – that can make up for any of their own offensive struggles. It will be a grind-it-out game for Philly.

BOS: Perimeter Defence First

The Boston Celtics have the fifth-ranked defense in the NBA. Their defensive contributions are both versatile and incredibly impressive. While they play small, their energy both on and off the ball is incredibly productive.

They are third in opponents field-goals made per game (38.5), sixth in field-goal percentage allowed (44.4%), sixth in assists allowed (23.0), and ninth in two-point field-goal percentage allowed (.506). Despite their lack of size in the paint, the Celtics have proven to be a practiced and versatile defensive unit.

They usually have the advantage because their similarly-sized lineups can switch almost every play. Where they struggle is against capable centers who can bust a defense one-on-one. Embiid is that issue, as well as Ben Simmons due to his size and speed. Their last chance for a win against Philly, the Celtics need to show they’ve grown over the year.

Head-to-Head: (F) Tobias Harris vs (F) Gordon Hayward

Two threatening scoring wings face off when the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics go head to head. Both Tobias Harris and Gordon Hayward are excellent shooters. Their ability as outlets for their penetrators will be crucial to their team’s success going forward.

(F) Tobias Harris (6-8, 235lb (203cm, 106kg) | Tennessee | 8 Years)

Tobias Harris continues to be an unsung hero for the Philadelphia 76ers. Not only is he a fantastic shooter, but his steadiness has helped Philadelphia weather some difficult storms with Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid’s inconsistencies.

Tobias Harris’ win-loss splits are telling regarding the Sixers’ style of play. He shoots 39.4% from deep in wins, while only 29.4% from deep in losses. While he is steady across the board otherwise, his scoring is the real difference-maker for Philly.

(F) Gordon Hayward (6-7, 207lb (201cm, 93kg) | Butler | 9 Years)

Gordon Hayward is having his best season since returning from his horrifying injury in 2017. While playing at power forward, Hayward’s spacing has been a perfect complement for Boston’s multitude of playmakers and shot-creators.

Hayward has been on an impressive run of form over his last three games. He is averaging 24.7 points and 9.7 rebounds on 42.9% shooting from deep. Hayward has always been able to shoot the ball, but his commitment to the glass has been crucial in their wins.

Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Celtics Predictions and Odds

The odds will be updated as they are made available.

Why the Philadelphia 76ers Will Win

The Philadelphia 76ers have the advantage in the paint. They will win this game if they can punish the Celtics inside and defend the three-point line themselves. Joel Embiid hasn’t had any resistance from the Celtics yet, not much suggests that will change this time out.

Why the Boston Celtics Will Win

The Boston Celtics survive on the back of their fantastically oriented offensive scheme. If they can pull out the Sixers’ bigs and punish them from deep, the Celtics may be able to take their first win of the season against Philadelphia.

WSN’s Pick

The Philadelphia 76ers don’t look to be challenged by the Celtics once again. Their dominance inside and their versatility on the defensive side of the court will cause problems for the Celtics who struggle in the paint.
