Philadelphia 76ers (Away)

Head Coach: Brett Brown {All-Time 215-338 | PHI}

Season Record: 37-24

Projected Starting Five: (G) Shake Milton – (G) Josh Richardson – (F) Glenn Robinson III – (F) Tobias Harris – (C) Al Horford

Top Performers:

  • (C) Joel Embiid – 30.3 MPG | 23.3 PPG | 11.8 RPG | 1.3 APG
  • (F) Tobias Harris – 34.6 MPG | 19.2 PPG | 6.7 RPG | .365 3P%
  • (G) Ben Simmons – 35.7 MPG | 16.7 PPG | 8.2 APG | 7.8 RPG

The Philadelphia 76ers are fighting tooth and nail to maintain their place in the Eastern Conference table. With Embiid and Simmons out of the lineup, the Sixers are relying on a team-oriented effort to keep them in the hunt.

The Sixers are coming off of a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. They put in a fantastic performance but were eventually unable to take the win for themselves. Their first half was great, but the Clippers showed their veteran savvy to take the match late.

When Philly takes on the Lakers, they’ll have their hands full with the LeBron James-led unit. They are lacking some strength defensively with their stars out. Expect a deep lineup as well as some unique combinations and opportunities for lesser-used pieces.

Los Angeles Lakers (Home)

Head Coach: Frank Vogel {All-Time 350-304 | IND, ORL, LAL}

Season Record: 46-13

Projected Starting Five: (G) Avery Bradley – (G) Danny Green – (F) LeBron James – (F) Kyle Kuzma – (C) Javale McGee

Top Performers:

  • (F) Anthony Davis – 34.3 MPG | 26.4 PPG | 9.4 RPG | 2.5 BPG
  • (F) LeBron James – 34.9 MPG | 25.5 PPG | 10.6 APG | 7.8 RPG
  • (F) Kyle Kuzma – 24.8 MPG | 12.7 PPG | 4.3 RPG | 1.3 APG

The Los Angeles Lakers still sit at the top of the Western Conference. With a record of 46-13, the Lakers are 5.5 games ahead of the Denver Nuggets who trail them at second in the West.

In their last game against the New Orleans Pelicans, the Los Angeles Lakers were able to show their quality. While they struggled at times against the youthful unit Pelicans, their timely finishing and defensive advantage in the paint won them the day.

The Sixers are an injured unit, but the Lakers will have to keep their guard up. Philly has received some impressive performances from unexpected players all season – namely Shake Milton and Norvel Pelle – so underestimating the Sixers would lead to their downfall.

What’s At Stake?

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Philadelphia 76ers have an old rivalry. Over 174 regular-season meetings, the Lakers lead the Sixers 94-80.

A win for the Philadelphia 76ers would bring them within a single game of the fourth-place Miami Heat.

A win for the Los Angeles Lakers would give them a six-game lead over the second-place Denver Nuggets.

Questions to answer

Can the Philadelphia 76ers put forth another team effort?

Will the Los Angeles Lakers depth continue to impress?

We are going to compare the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

PHI: Movement, Movement, Movement!

With Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons likely to be out for this game as well, the Sixers will have to rely on lesser-known stars Tobias Harris and Al Horford. But rather than riding their shoulders, the Sixers should double-down on their play against the Clippers by moving the ball liberally.

The Sixers scored 130 points against the NBA’s fifth-ranked defense in the Clippers. Their success was found via some hot shooting, opened up by some fantastic ball movement. Shooting 48.8% from three against the Clippers, the Sixers assisted on 56.2% of their field-goals.

They’ll need more of the same against the Lakers. Los Angeles has the advantage at the rim, and with Embiid out Philly will have to match the Laker’s efficiency in the paint with their own firepower from deep.

LAL: A Team Effort

The Los Angeles Lakers were without Anthony Davis in their last match and don’t project to have him available for this match either. They got past the Zion-led New Orleans Pelicans off of James’ distribution and they’ll need more of the same this time out.

James led the team, as usual, with 13 assists. However, his classic performance also displayed an impressive night on the glass and on the scoresheet with 12 boards and 34 points. His teammates converted on the opportunities provided, as the Lakers shot 51.5% from the field.

With a weakened Sixers team it is easy to believe that the Lakers can fall back into one-on-one play. However, as proven against the Pelicans, good ball movement and finishing can lead to a less stressful night as ten Lakers appeared in the match in over ten minutes of play each.

Philadelphia 76ers Roster Notes

(C) Joel Embiid – 27 Feb 2020 – Out (Shoulder) – Testing showed no structural damage and Embiid will be re-evaluated in one week according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

(G) Ben Simmons – 25 Feb 2020 – Out (Back) – Simmons will be re-evaluated in two weeks after suffering nerve impingement in his lower back, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Los Angeles Lakers Roster Notes

(G) Alex Caruso – 1 Mar 2020 – Day To Day (Hamstring) – Caruso is questionable for Sunday’s (Mar. 1) game against New Orleans.

(F) Anthony Davis – 1 Mar 2020 – Day To Day (Knee) – Davis is questionable for Sunday’s (Mar. 1) game against New Orleans.

(G) Danny Green – 1 Mar 2020 – Day To Day (Hip) – Green is probable for Sunday’s (Mar. 1) game against New Orleans.

Head-to-Head: (G) Shake Milton vs (F) Markieff Morris

Two potential late-season contributors have shown their skills for the Sixers and the Lakers. Shake Milton went off in his last game in the absence of Embiid and Simmons. Markieff Morris is more understated in his contributions for the Lakers, but they are certainly felt.

(G) Shake Milton (6-5, 207lb (196cm, 93kg) | SMU | 1 Year)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 23 PHI 28 17.8 8.8 2.2 2.0 .497 .466

If you hadn’t heard of Shake Milton, you’d be forgiven. The sophomore has mostly spent time with the Sixers’ G-League outfit but has made a name for himself in recent games. Milton exploded for 39 points on 70% from the field in a loss to the Clippers. With Embiid and Simmons out, he’s averaged 26.0 points and 4.3 assists on 68.3% from the field and 80.% from deep. His firepower will be more than necessary against the Lakers.

(F) Markieff Morris (6-8, 245lb (203cm, 111kg) | Kansas | 8 Years)

Season Age Team Games MP PTS REB AST FG% 3P%
19-20 30 NYK-LAL 48 21.9 10.7 3.9 1.5 .447 .357

The signing of Markieff Morris was a subtle one by the Los Angeles Lakers. They needed depth at the forward position, and they received a versatile two-way option in Morris. While he isn’t the offensive force that his twin brother is, Morris can help shore up the Lakers’ defensive issues on the perimeter. If they can sort out his shooting inconsistency, he might be the key to their season.

Philadelphia 76ers at Los Angeles Lakers FAQ

Why the Philadelphia 76ers Will Win

The Sixers are undermanned and outgunned. But they showed against the Clippers that, given the opportunity, they can still score with the best of them. It’ll take a collective effort on the glass on top of a stellar shooting effort to beat the Lakers.

Why the Los Angeles Lakers Will Win

All signs point to the success of the Los Angeles Lakers in this matchup. They have the size advantage, the scoring advantage, and the defensive edge. Still, the Sixers have some pieces that can light them up from the outside. If the Lakers are complacent, they’ll find this win difficult to come by.
