  • (G) Josh Richardson – 32.0 MPG | 16.1 MPG | 3.4 RPG | 3.6 APG

Ever since the Philadelphia 76ers came off of their embarrassing loss to the Toronto Raptors, they have been on a roll. After winning four of their last five games, the Sixers face an easy two-game run before their rematch with the Raptors.

They face off with a Washington Wizards team that is not only banged up but struggling to stop the ball in any capacity. The Sixers, with their depth of talent, should have little issue taking care of Washington.

The Sixers will have to worry about the scoring-adept backcourt of Bradley Beal and Isaiah Thomas. While Philly may be missing Josh Richardson, head coach Brett Brown won’t be afraid to look to Furkan Korkmaz and Matisse Thybulle to step up their game.

The Washington Wizards are coming off of a disappointing loss to the Orlando Magic. While the Magic are no pushovers, Washington made a supposed offensive dud look like their equal.

Losing 127-120 to the Magic was a punch to the gut for Bradley Beal. After scoring 42 points in the loss, they’ll be hard-pressed to redeem themselves against the Sixers.

Closing their short two-game homestead against the Sixers won’t be easy. The Wizards have the firepower to take on the Sixers but don’t look to have the interior depth.

Philadelphia 76ers vs Washington Wizards: Rivalry?

Questions to Answer

What can make the Philadelphia 76ers contenders?

Who can step up for Washington?

We are going to compare the Philadelphia 76ers and the Washington Wizards in an attempt to see who has the advantage in this matchup.

The Sixers Bench Still Needs More Quality

Despite the intense criticism that the Philadelphia 76ers are receiving they still sit at 15-6, good enough for fifth in the Eastern Conference. While their All-Star pair of Simmons and Embiid haven’t lived up to expectations, a bigger problem arises when you analyze their bench.

When you look at the Philadelphia 76ers reserve unit, you can see that the quality drops off significantly from the starting five. Furkan Korkmaz and Matisse Thybulle are his most used reserve pieces, averaging 23.0 and 15.6 minutes per game respectively.

Considering they combine to contribute only 13.3 points per game, the Sixers bench needs more production. Elton Brand gutted the team’s depth to build a terrifying starting five, but it hasn’t worked out entirely. Brand and Brown’s choices with the bench will determine their success going forward.

Who Will Step Up for the Wiz?

It is no secret that the Washington Wizards are battling some key injuries through the first quarter of the season. Thomas Bryant and CJ Miles are key contributors. With them out, who can support Beal?

The easy thing to do is point to rookie sensation Rui Hachimura. Hachimura has been playing a ton of minutes as of late but has been effective in his time.

Hachimura is averaging 20.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists on 52% shooting. He is struggling from deep though, converting on only 18.2% of his attempts from three. To beat the Sixers, Washington will need every extra point.

The Sixers’ Versatile Defence Continues

While their offensive output has sputtered to open the season, the Sixers’ defense remains a constant. With a starting lineup that boasts as much defensive ability as the Sixers, it isn’t surprising to see they are in the top five of defensive efficiency.

Over their last nine matches, the Philadelphia 76ers have owned the NBA’s best defensive rating. In their most recent win over the Utah Jazz, their adaptability aided them in slowing the explosive Donovan Mitchell and the towering Rudy Gobert.

What was most promising against the Jazz was Philly’s ability to defend the pick and roll. What caused them issues in the past, was negated by the efforts of the Sixers’ hard hedging and strong recovery. Their defensive trends bode well for their match against the Wizards.

How Bad Are the Wizards Defensively?

Nobody expected this Washington Wizards team to be a pillar defensively, but they are setting records with their defensive ineptitude.

Ten times so far this season a team has allowed 140 points or more. Out of those ten times, the Washington Wizards have been part of three. Last, in defensive rating, the Wizards have a lot to clean up before they’re respectable.

They will struggle with Thomas Bryant and Ian Mahinmi out, as Davis Bertans has been forced into the role of make-shift centre. Their weakness on the inside won’t receive any mercy from the Sixers, so Washington will have to double cleverly to mitigate the damage.

Head-to-Head: (G) Ben Simmons vs (G) Isaiah Thomas

It’s a battle at the point guard position when the Sixers face off with the Wizards.

Ben Simmons is a defensive and playmaking force, but will he be able to slow the diminutive but explosive Isaiah Thomas?

(G) Ben Simmons (6-10, 230lb (208cm, 104kg) | LSU | 2 Years)

In the Sixers’ four straight wins, Ben Simmons has had a starring role. Perhaps it was a wake up call due to their loss to the Raptors, but Simmons has returned to near All-Star form.

Through their winning streak, Simmons has averaged 13.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 8.8 assists to go along with 3.0 steals per game. While his offence will always be limited, Simmons’ defence and playmaking is taking down the opposition.

(G) Isaiah Thomas (5-9, 185lb (175cm, 83kg) | Washington | 8 Years)

Isaiah Thomas will be tasked with scoring on the Philadelphia 76ers tough defensive five. Regardless of who is marking him, Thomas will certainly get his fill of opportunities.

Despite the Wizards’ three-game losing streak, Thomas has been productive. Averaging 15.3 points and 4.0 assists on 54.8% shooting over his last three, Thomas may need to be a bit more selfish to take one from the Sixers.

Philadelphia 76ers at Washington Wizards Predictions and Odds

The odds will be updated as they are made available.

Why the Philadelphia 76ers Will Win

The Philadelphia 76ers have the interior presence to take down the Washington Wizards. While Philly will have to contain the Wizards’ dynamic offence, they clearly have the advantage in overall quality.

Why the Washington Wizards Will Win

The Washington Wizards are complete offence. Without some key big men, they are expected to struggle in the paint. If Beal and Thomas can lead their offence efficiently, they might be able to outgun the Sixers.

WSN’s Pick

The Sixers have too much quality to lose to the Wizards. If their players can put in a good performance, they should be versatile enough to manage the Wizards’ eventual scoring run.
