The Sacramento Kings are coming off of a late-game victory over the Phoenix Suns. While they took a commanding lead in the first half the Suns stormed back, only to be stopped by Sacramento’s defense.

Luckily for the Sacramento Kings, they had some excellent contributions across the board, particularly by bench sharpshooter Bogdan Bogdanovic and starting veteran Cory Joseph.

The Kings have shown that without their star De’Aaron Fox, they are still not to be taken lightly as a team. They face a Brooklyn team short of stars, but with as much competitive fire as them.

Brooklyn Nets (Home)

Head Coach: Kenny Atkinson {All-Time 95-164 | BKN}

Projected Starting Five: (G) Spencer Dinwiddie – (G) Garrett Temple – (F) Joe Harris – (F) Taurean Prince – (C) Jarrett Allen

Season Record: 6-8

Top Performers

  • (G) Kyrie Irving – 33.8 MPG | 28.5 PPG | 5.4 RPG | 7.2 APG

  • (F) Caris LeVert – 31.6 MPG | 16.8 PPG | 5.0 RPG | 4.0 APG

The Nets are coming off of a much-desired win over the Charlotte Hornets, after losing by 29 points to the Indiana Pacers. They were led by young center Jarrett Allen, who stepped up in the place of the injured Kyrie Irving.

Brooklyn showed their versatility against the Hornets, who decided to try and overcome their size with sheer speed and athleticism. Instead, the Nets succeeded by sticking to their guns and attacking the paint through Allen and Jordan.

The Sacramento Kings offer a different challenge to the Nets, as Buddy Hield leads a vicious three-point attack supported by some bruising big men.

Bogi Deserves A Bigger Role

Bogdan Bogdanovic is in a unique situation. With many talented wings on the Sacramento Kings roster, he has been frozen out of the starting lineup and is their designated gunner off the bench. However, his play of late suggests he deserves more.

Bogdanovic has been fantastic in his last six matches. The Kings are 4-2 in that time and it is no small part due to Bogdanovic’s contributions. He is averaging 21.3 points, 6.7 assists, and 2.3 steals on 53% shooting from the field and a shocking 56.5% from three.

Without Fox, Bogdanovic has stepped up to the task. As the Kings face off against a defensively inept Brooklyn Nets team, odds are we’ll see Bogdanovic go off for another hot shooting night.

What Is the Issue With Brooklyn’s Defence?

The Nets, or any team led by Kyrie Irving for that matter, are certainly not a defense-oriented team. Brooklyn is in the bottom half of the NBA in blocks, steals, and turnovers forced. So what is the issue with the Nets’ defense?

The main issue with their side is that they are eighth in the league in offensive rebounding allowed at 27.9%. Their opponents also score 13.3 points per game off of second opportunities.

With capable paint presences like Allen, Jordan, and Prince, the Nets should not be taken advantage of so easily on the inside. They can’t allow such passive play against the Kings, as the likes of Richaun Holmes and Harrison Barnes love crashing the glass.

Stepping Up to the Task

The Sacramento Kings are tending to some injuries of their own, but they clearly made the right move when they signed veteran guard Cory Joseph to back up their young and explosive point guard.

Initially brought in to be a defensive stopper in a two-guard backcourt, Joseph has taken on the responsibility of lead playmaker in Fox’s stead. Averaging only 2.8 assists per game for his career, Joseph has grown into the role as he tallied a career-high 14 assists in their win over the Suns.

24th in the league in assists, Joseph’s playmaking is more important than his scoring. A team of high-powered guns with few hands to guide them, Joseph’s influence on moving the ball is essential to the Kings’ success.

Pressure Is Mounting on the Nets

Eight losses in fourteen games is nothing to be proud of for this Nets side. Considering they’ve brought in two All-NBA talents in Irving and Jordan, much more was expected of this Brooklyn team.

Eight new players is a lot to adjust to, but the Nets performances are down across the board. They don’t rank in the top ten of any major statistical category outside of three-pointers attempted. Looking for answers, Kenny Atkinson has begun to lean on his youngsters for a needed spark.

Nic Claxton, Dzanan Musa, and Rodions Kurucs are all players that bring unique skillsets to the table and have been given an opportunity with injuries piling up. The Nets are lacking in energy, and while those three combine to contribute less than 12 points combined, their effort is a stark contrast to what the Nets have seen from their stars.

Head-to-Head: (C) Richaun Holmes vs (C) Jarrett Allen

Two young and energetic prospects at the center position look to assert their dominance when the Kings and the Nets face off.

Jarrett Allen’s numbers are down, but that is mostly due to sharing time with DeAndre Jordan. On the other side of the court, Richaun Holmes is capitalizing on his first real opportunity at extended minutes.

(C) Richaun Holmes (6-10, 240lb (208cm, 108kg) | Bowling Green | 4 Years)

Richaun Holmes is a bit of a late starter, but his contributions at this point in the season are more than welcome. Thought to be just an energy big, he has grown to become an adept paint enforcer in a team of mostly shooters.

Holmes is a brawler in the paint, but he will have to contend with the length and athleticism of not only Jarrett Allen, but DeAndre Jordan as well.

(C) Jarrett Allen (6-11, 237lb (211cm, 107kg) | Texas | 2 Years)

Jarrett Allen is an enforcer in the paint. His length and athleticism is near unmatched, while his hair is certainly the best in the league. He led the Nets to their most recent victory over the Hornets.

He doesn’t create for himself, but Allen is an efficient finisher in the paint. If he can overcome the bulk of Richaun Holmes, he should be able to dominate inside. However, Allen will have to show his quick feet, to keep up with the Kings’ shooters.

Sacramento Kings at Brooklyn Nets Predictions and Odds

The odds will be updated as they are made available.

Why the Sacramento Kings Will Win

The Kings look to start off their road trip with a win. They’ve been able to show impressive late-game execution against both the Suns and the Celtics. Considering their offense has looked great, they’ll have the odds in their favor if they can match that with their defensive effort.

Why the Brooklyn Nets Will Win

The Nets have been struggling on both ends of the court. They will need to improve on their shooting and buckle down on the defensive side of the ball if they look to take a win from the Sacramento Kings.
