Nikola Jokic finished two assists shy of a triple-double, although the big man played a key role nonetheless in Denver’s superb ball movement in this game, particularly in the first half where 81% of their made field goals were assisted.

San Antonio Spurs (Home)

Head Coach: Gregg Popovich {All-Time: 1245-575 | SAS}

Season Record: 48-34

Projected Starting Five: (G) Derrick White – (G) Bryn Forbes – (G/F) DeMar DeRozan – (F/C) LaMarcus Aldridge – (C) Jakob Poeltl

  • G Derrick White – 28.5 MPG | 17.8 PPG | 3.4 APG | .607 FG%

The Spurs are in a do-or-die situation now, as a result of the loss in Denver. San Antonio’s two top scorers, LaMarcus Aldridge, and DeMar DeRozan, each scored 17 points, with Aldridge adding 10 rebounds to complete his double-double.

Fellow starters Jakob Poeltl and Derrick White each scored 12 points in a game where the disciplined Spurs committed just seven turnovers compared to the 13 giveaways coughed up by the Nuggets.

Normally a sound playmaker, DeRozan was forced to create more looks for himself than usual, which led to the four-time All-Star tallying just a single assist.

What’s At Stake?

With the Nuggets on the verge of making it to the second round, coach Mike Malone’s team should be wary of getting too overconfident. Denver has never held a 3-2 lead in the first round, while the last time they played a game seven in that round, they lost to the Lakers in 2012.

The last time the Spurs were down 3-2 in a first round series was in 2011 when they were bounced by the Memphis Grizzlies in six games. The last time San Antonio has come back from 3-2 in any round of the playoffs was in 2008 against the New Orleans Hornets.

Jamal Murray Gaining Confidence

After laying an egg in Denver’s game three loss, Jamal Murray has rebounded in a big way by posting two solid shooting performances.

The young Canadian has been a key cog in Denver’s two straight wins in this series, providing the Nuggets with some much-needed firepower with his improved three-point shooting. The third-year veteran has also displayed a knack for setting up his teammates with quality looks by tallying 13 assists in those victories, after notching just six in the first three games of the series.

Rudy Gay Fading Away

After starting off the series with a sold 14 point outing off the bench, the former UConn star has been almost invisible otherwise. Although he has been a solid contributor on the boards thus far, Gay has not provided his usual scoring punch. This has forced Aldridge and DeRozan to be more ball dominant than they normally would be within coach Popovich’s system. The elimination of Gay as an offensive threat has made Denver’s road to a potential series win much smoother.

Denver Nuggets Roster Notes

F Michael Porter – 21 Mar 2019 – Out (Back) – Porter Jr. has been participating in light contact 3-on-3 drills in practice, but is still a long shot to return this year according to Nick Kosmider of The Athletic.

San Antonio Spurs Roster Notes

G Dejounte Murray – 13 Mar 2019 – Out For Season (Knee) – Murray is making progress and is practicing on his own, but he’s not expected to play this season, according to Jeff Garcia of FOXSanAntonio.com. He had ACL surgery on his knee before the season started.

X-Factors: Gary Harris vs Bryn Forbes

Michigan State coach, Tom Izzo, is likely watching this series closely, as two of his former pupils have been facing off each other. While both of these former Spartans may fly under the radar due to the presence of star players on their respective teams, they still serve as valuable assets nonetheless.

Gary Harris

Shooting Guard | 6-4, 210 lb (193cm, 95kg) | Michigan State | Exp. 4 Years

12.9 PPG | 2.2 APG | 2.8 RPG | 1.0 SPG | 0.3 BPG | 1.2 TOV | .424 FG% | .339 3P%

After coming out of college, Gary Harris was not expected to be a major contributor in the NBA. It is safe to say the Indiana native has exceeded those low expectations, as he has been a key part of Denver’s young nucleus. A solid defender with a high basketball IQ, Harris has been a big reason why the Nuggets made a big leap much sooner than anticipated, as he has been the perfect complementary piece for Jamal Murray.

Bryn Forbes

Shooting Guard | 6-3, 190lb (190cm, 86kg) | Michigan State | Exp. 2 Years

11.8 PPG | 2.1 APG | 2.9 RPG | 0.5 SPG | 0.0 BPG | 1.0 TOV | .456 FG% | .426 3P%

Like Harris, Bryn Forbes’ numbers are not eye-popping by any means with the exception of his three-point shooting percentage. After spending most of his rookie season in the G-League with the Austin Spurs, Forbes was able to improve dramatically as a long-range gunner, from 32.1% that year to 42.6% this past season. The Spurs coaching staff has also helped maximize Forbes’ ability to torch teams beyond the arc by developing his off-the-ball tactics to help him get open more easily.
